In the first part, she examines knowledge systems within historically recorded oral cultures, showing how the link between power and the control of knowledge is established. Analyzing the material mnemonic devices used by documented oral cultures, she demonstrates how early societies maintained a vast corpus of pragmatic information concerning animal behavior, plant properties, navigation, astronomy, genealogies, laws and trade agreements, among other matters. In the second part Kelly turns to the archaeological record of three sites, Chaco Canyon, Poverty Point and Stonehenge, offering new insights into the purpose of the monuments and associated decorated objects. This book demonstrates how an understanding of rational intellect, pragmatic knowledge and mnemonic technologies in prehistoric societies offers a new tool for analysis of monumental structures built by non-literate cultures.

  post archaic period: A Fragmented History Gijs Willem Tol, 2012 This dissertation presents four methodological case studies that elaborate on the results of two field survey projects (the Astura and Nettuno surveys) that were carried out by the Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA). The case studies aim at investigating biasing factors that limit the analytical and comparative value of data from archaeological survey in general using these two projects as a suitable testing ground. Both surveys, carried out between 2003 and 2005, fell within the ambit of the Pontine Region Project (PRP), a long-term research program aimed at the diachronic archaeological investigation of the various landscape units forming this region. They covered two contiguous areas, situated on the Tyrrhenian seaboard, approximately 60 kilometres south of Rome. The study area comprises the communal area of the modern town of Nettuno, as well as the lower valleys of the Astura and Moscarello rivers (see fig. 0.1).2 As such it incorporates parts of the hinterland of the ancient towns of Antium and Satricum. In chronological terms this dissertation considers a time-span of 1300 years, from the 6th century BC to the 7th century AD.

On the basis of a comparison of intensive field surveys in different parts of the Pontine region, central Italy, it is argued that detailed site and off-site collection strategies have much to offer in understanding site chronology and land use patterns. Setting the field survey data in a wider geographical and historical context, the author also explores the context and impact of the foundation of Roman colonies and rural tribes on rural settlement systems, as such contributing to current debates on the nature of early Roman colonization.
  post archaic period: Satricum in the Post-archaic Period Marijke Gnade, 2002 How can material culture be related to written history? The archaeological record of ancient Satricum (Borgo, Le Ferriere, Latium) pents an interesting case study. During the fifth and fourth centuries BC, the area was reportedly invaded by the Volscians. This Central-Italian people had long been archaeologically invisible, but recent investigations at Satricum have brought to light a rich record of material remains from precisely this period. The question is: does it reflect a Volscian presence or prove the continued occupation of the original, Latin inhabitants? This study argues that the material culture does indeed reflect a Volscian presence, but that it in no way confirms the barbarian image presented by ancient sources such as Livy. Marijke Gnade has lectured on Italian Archaeology at the University of Amsterdam since 1987. After participating in the Satricum Research Project for ten years, she became its executive director in 1991. Her first book on the subject, The Southwest Necropolis of Satricum, was published in 1992.

Nijboer, 2001 Caeculus IV opens with a dedication to professor Marianne Kleibrink on the occasion of her 60th birthday, followed by a complete list of her publications. The Proceedings of the 4th Fransum Colloquium start with an article of Christopher Smith, entitled Ritualising the Economy. He presents a theoretical base for a correlation between ritual and economy. Smith outlines some recent theories which incorporate economic activity into ritual context, actions into thought or, as one could say, matter into mind. Furthermore, he tries to relate this theoretical framework to the archaeological evidence from Latium Vetus, the region on which his own research focuses. The results from the recent Dutch excavations in Italy at Satricum seem to correspond fairly well with the discussed theories. His paper offers, therefor, a suitable foundation for the following contributions, most of which concentrate on central Italy. The second contribution by Tsjeard Hoekstra deals with the biography of bronze hoards from Italy. Albert Nijboer continues the debate with a discussion of the significant changes in hoarding in central Italy from 800 to 500 BC. The fourth paper by Demetrius Waarsenburg and Hendrieneke Maas deals with the bronzes deposited in the early sanctuary at Satricum in Lazio. Jelle Bouma discusses the same shrine as the previous authors but during the subsequent period, the 5th and 4t centuries BC. He presents a report of his excavation of the second votive deposit at the main shrine of Satricum. Peter Attema presents in his paper evidence of a recent survey in the area around Sezze, ancient Setia. The paper by Marjan Galestin discusses Roman coin hoards in the Netherlands. The last paper, not related to the central topic of this issue, is by Patricia Roncoroni who studies children's graves in Latium during the early Iron Age.

  post archaic period: Early Greek Portraiture Catherine M. Keesling, 2017-05-03 In this book, Catherine M. Keesling lends new insight into the origins of civic honorific portraits that emerged at the end of the fifth century BC in ancient Greece. Surveying the subjects, motives and display contexts of Archaic and Classical portrait sculpture, she demonstrates that the phenomenon of portrait representation in Greek culture is complex and without a single, unifying history. Bringing a multi-disciplinary approach to the topic, Keesling grounds her study in contemporary texts such as Herodotus' Histories and situates portrait representation within the context of contemporary debates about the nature of arete (excellence), the value of historical commemoration and the relationship between the human individual and the gods and heroes. She argues that often the goal of Classical portraiture was to link the individual to divine or heroic models. Offering an overview of the role of portraits in Archaic and Classical Greece, her study includes local histories of the development of Greek portraiture in sanctuaries such as Olympia, Delphi and the Athenian Acropolis.

In antiquity itself and in our memory of antiquity, the Eleusinian Mysteries stand out as the oldest and most venerable mystery cult. Despite the tremendous popularity of the Eleusinian Mysteries, their origins are unknown. Because they are lost in an era without written records, they can only be reconstructed with the help of archaeology. This book provides a much-needed synthesis of the archaeology of Eleusis during the Bronze Age and reconstructs the formation and early development of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The discussion of the origins of the Eleusinian Mysteries is complemented with discussions of the theology of Demeter and an update on the state of research in the archaeology of Eleusis from the Bronze Age to the end of antiquity.

  post archaic period: The Sinitic Languages Mieczysław Jerzy Künstler, 2019-02-04 The Sinitic Languages is the quintessence of Mieczysław Jerzy Künstler’s thirty years of research into the Chinese languages. Originally published in Polish in 2000 as Języki chińskie, this work collected Künstler’s various lectures on the fascinating world of this branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It marked the apogee of linguistic research of Chinese languages in Poland. With a keen, intuitive understanding of the workings of these languages, Künstler introduces his readership to the historical development of spoken Sinitic languages. Besides analyzing the various stages of Standard Chinese, he also makes a convincing case for classifying Cantonese, Pekinese, Nankinese, Minnanese, Wu, and other so-called dialects as distinct languages. Künstler’s work offers an insightful and detailed overview about synchronic and diachronic research on the major language groups of Chinese, a fast growing academic field until today. The present English version was begun by Künstler himself before his untimely demise in 2007. However, it is not merely a translation of the Polish work, but a revised edition that introduces a shift in Sinological linguistics from a genetic to an areal description of Modern Chinese languages. A joint effort of the Polish linguist Alfred Franciszek Majewicz and the Sinologists Ewa Zajdler and Maria Kurpaska helped to bring the original manuscript to its completion. Thus, The Sinitic Languages is now finally accessible for a larger readership. Both amateurs and experts interested in this topic are invited to follow Künstler on his intellectual journey into Sinological linguistics. Künstler intentionally excluded Chinese characters from his work because he viewed the Sinitic languages primarily as spoken languages. In order to provide readers with the opportunity to compare spoken and written language, the editors added an index with glossary to the English version.

  post archaic period: Dealing with biases Hendrik Feiken, 2014-09-18 This books explores the bias that is introduced by erosion and sedimentation on the distribution of archaeological materials in Mediterranean landscapes. It describes innovative and interdisciplinary work that led to the formulation of a broad range of geo-archeological approaches that are applied to two Italian areas, studied intensively by the Groningen Institute of Archaeology: the Pontine Region in South Lazio, and the Raganello Basin in North Calabria. The approaches deal with geological biases affecting the study of protohistoric remains in the sedimentary part of the Pontine plain; the development of a detailed landscape classification approach to predict and test site location preferences and survey biases in the uplands of both study areas; and the development and evaluation of an innovative computerised landscape evolution model for a test area in the Raganello Basin uplands. In addition to the presented case study, this book also shows how the three geo-archaeological approaches can be applied in a wider context to quantitatively understand how erosion and sedimentation bias our understanding of archaeological records.
