practicing the presence of god brother andrew: The Knowledge of the Holy A. W. Tozer, 2022-05-17 True religion confronts earth with heaven and brings eternity to bear upon time. The messenger of Christ, though he speaks from God, must also, as the Quakers used to say, speak to the condition of his hearers; otherwise he will speak a language known only to himself. His message must be not only timeless but timely. He must speak to his own generation. The message of this book does not grow out of these times but it is appropriate to them. It is called forth by a condition which has existed in the Church for some years and is steadily growing worse. I refer to the loss of the concept of majesty from the popular religious mind. The Church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshipping men. This she has done not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge; and her very unawareness only makes her situation all the more tragic.

practicing the presence of god brother andrew: Globalizing Theology Craig Ott, Harold A. Netland, 2006-10-01 One of the most powerful forces in the twenty-first century is the increasing phenomenon of globalization. In nearly every realm of human activity, traditional boundaries are disappearing and people worldwide are more interconnected than ever. Christianity has also become more aware of global realities and the important role of the church in non-Western countries. Church leaders must grapple with the implications for theology and ministry in an ever-shrinking world. Globalizing Theology is a groundbreaking book that addresses these issues of vital importance to the church. It contains articles from leading scholars, including Tite Tiénou, Kevin Vanhoozer, Charles Van Engen, M. Daniel Carroll R., Andrew Walls, Vinoth Ramachandra, and Paul Hiebert. Topics covered include the challenges that globalization brings to theology, how we can incorporate global perspectives into our thinking, and the effect a more global theology has on a variety of important issues.
practicing the presence of god brother andrew: Brothers, We Are Not Professionals John Piper, 2013-02-01 In this revised and expanded edition of Brothers, We Are Not Professionals that includes a new introduction and select all-new chapters, best-selling author John Piper pleads through a series of thoughtful essays with fellow pastors to abandon the professionalization of the pastorate and pursue the prophetic call of the Bible for radical ministry. “We pastors are being killed by the professionalizing of the pastoral ministry,” he writes. “The mentality of the professional is not the mentality of the prophet. It is not the mentality of the slave of Christ. Professionalism has nothing to do with the essence and heart of the Christian ministry. The more professional we long to be, the more spiritual death we will leave in our wake. For there is no professional childlikeness, there is no professional tenderheartedness, there is no professional panting after God. “Brothers, we are not professionals. We are outcasts. We are aliens and exiles in the world. Our citizenship is in Heaven, and we wait with eager expectation for the Lord (Phil. 3:20). You cannot professionalize the love for His appearing without killing it. And it is being killed. “The world sets the agenda of the professional man; God sets the agenda of the spiritual man. The strong wine of Jesus Christ explodes the wine- skins of professionalism.”

practicing the presence of god brother andrew: The Eternal Current Aaron Niequist, 2018-08-07 A call for Christians to move past the shallows of idealized beliefs and into a deeper, more vibrant, beatitude-like faith rooted in sacred practices and intimate experiences with God. When the limits of his own faith experience left him feeling spiritually empty, Niequist determined God must have a wider vision for worship and community. In his search, Aaron discovered that there was historical Christian precedent for enacting faith in a different way, an ancient and now future way of believing. He calls this third way practice-based faith. This book is about loving one's faith tradition and, at the same time, following the call to something deeper and richer. By adopting some new spiritual practices, it is possible to learn to swim again with a renewed sense of vigor and divine purpose.

practicing the presence of god brother andrew: The Pursuit of God A.W. Tozer, 2017-02-16 In this hour of all-but-universal darkness, one cheering gleam appears: within the fold of conservative Christianity there are to be found increasing numbers of persons whose religious lives are marked by a growing hunger after God Himself. They are eager for spiritual realities and will not be put off with words, nor will they be content with correct “interpretations” of truth. They are athirst for God and they will not be satisfied till they have drunk deep at the Fountain of Living Water… This book is a modest attempt to aid God’s hungry children so to find Him. Nothing here is new except in the sense that it is a discovery which my own heart has made of spiritual realities most delightful and wonderful to me. Others before me have gone much farther into these holy mysteries than I have done, but if my fire is not large it is yet real, and there may be those who can light their candle at its flame. –A.W. Tozer
practicing the presence of god brother andrew: A Testament of Devotion Thomas R. Kelly, 1996-08-02 Since its first publication in 1941, A Testament of Devotion, by the renowned Quaker teacher Thomas Kelly, has been universally embraced as a truly enduring spiritual classic. Plainspoken and deeply inspirational, it gathers together five compelling essays that urge us to center our lives on God's presence, to find quiet and stillness within modern life, and to discover the deeply satisfying and lasting peace of the inner spiritual journey. As relevant today as it was a half-century ago, A Testament of Devotion is the ideal companion to that highest of all human arts-the lifelong conversation between God and his creatures. I have in mind something deeper than the simplification of our external programs, our absurdly crowded calendars of appointments through which so many pantingly and frantically gasp. These do become simplified in holy obedience, and the poise and peace we have been missing can really be found. But there is a deeper, an internal simplification of the whole of one's personality, stilled, tranquil, in childlike trust listening ever to Eternity's whisper, walking with a smile into the dark.
practicing the presence of god brother andrew: A Stranger in the House of God John Koessler, 2009-08-30 Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

practicing the presence of god brother andrew: The Great Good Thing Andrew Klavan, 2016-09-20 No one was more surprised than Andrew Klavan when, at the age of fifty, he found himself about to be baptized. The Great Good Thing tells the soul-searching story of a man born into an age of disbelief who had to abandon everything he thought he knew in order to find his way to the truth. Best known for his hard-boiled, white-knuckle thrillers and for the movies made from them--among them True Crime and Don’t Say a Word--bestselling author and Edgar Award-winner Klavan was born in a suburban Jewish enclave outside New York City. He left the faith of his childhood behind to live most of his life as an agnostic until he found himself mulling over the hard questions that so many other believers have asked: How can I be certain in my faith? What's the truth, and how can I know it's the truth? How can you think, live, and make choices and judgments day by day if you don't know for sure? In The Great Good Thing, Klavan shares that his troubled childhood caused him to live inside the stories in his head and grow up to become an alienated young writer whose disconnection and rage devolved into depression and suicidal breakdown. In those years, Klavan fought to ignore the insistent call of God, a call glimpsed in a childhood Christmas at the home of a beloved babysitter, in a transcendent moment at his daughter's birth, and in a snippet of a baseball game broadcast that moved him from the brink of suicide. But more than anything, the call of God existed in stories--the stories Klavan loved to read and the stories he loved to write. Join Klavan as he discovers the meaning of belief, the importance of asking tough questions, and the power of sharing your story.

practicing the presence of god brother andrew: Letters By A Modern Mystic Frank Laubach, 2022-06-21 Letters by a Modern Mystic is a collection of excerpts from the letters of missionary Frank C. Laubach. Written between January 1930 and January 1932, these intimate writings show a faithful man's work to become closer to God through daily, hourly, and minute-by-minute practice. Frank C. Laubach (1884-1970) was an American missionary and literacy advocate. After graduating from Princeton University (1909), Union Theological Seminary (1913), and Columbia University (Ph.D., 1915), he and his wife Emma sailed to the Philippines to begin their missionary life. They worked among the local Catholic population and spent seven years building evangelical churches on Mindanao, one of the largest Philippine islands. Laubach was later appointed to the faculty of Union Theological Seminary, helping to establish the campus in Manila. During this time, he wrote the book The People of the Philippines, a history of the islands and of religious life there. After 14 years in the Philippines, Laubach traveled to Dansalan (renamed Malawi in 1956) to work with the Muslim Moros people. Finding them resistant to his evangelical message, he thought that a focus on literacy would be a better method for reaching them. He felt that approaching the Moros people with education and a divine love which will speak Christ to them though I never use his name would lead to greater results. His each one teach one method of learning to read spread quickly, leading to an explosion of literacy on the island. During his time at Dansalan, Laubach was alone, his wife and son remaining on another island for health and education purposes. Laubach combatted his loneliness by writing letters to his father about his work, his faith, and his deep mystic experience of God. One might expect an evangelical Christian missionary from 1930 to be hostile to the ideas of another religion. But in fact, Laubach seems to welcome the Muslim perspective. Living in the atmosphere of Islam is proving-thus far-a tremendous spiritual stimulation. Mohammed is helping me... He found strength in some fundamentals of Islam. Submission [to God] is the first and last duty of man [in Islam], he writes. That is exactly what I have been needing in my Christian life. He felt that he had not, to this point in his life, made enough of an effort to live minute-by-minute with the will of God. This concept of living each minute for God comes up again and again. As he puts it into practice, Laubach seems to find a rapture and connection to God and his fellow man that he's never known before. Written as personal letters rather than as a piece of literature, this short work is both intimate and readable. It provides valuable insight into the mind of a spiritual man, as well as inspiration for how the modern Christian can try to lead a more Christ-filled life. Even his failures provide encouragement. In a letter of April 1930, he confesses that the constant submission to God is difficult and that he often falls short. In 1935, Laubach began to spread his literacy method to other countries. After retiring from his missionary work, he founded Laubach Literacy which has helped nearly 3 million people worldwide learn how to read. In 2002, the program merged with Literacy Volunteers of America to become Pro-Literacy, which still works to spread the written word globally.

practicing the presence of god brother andrew: The Practice of the Presence of God Martin Laird, Sheelah Treflé Hidden, 2016-11-29 Exploring the unity of the practice of prayer and the practice of theology, this book draws together insights from world-class theologians including Rowan Williams, Andrew Louth, Frances Young, Margaret R. Miles, Sebastian Brock, and Nicholaï Sakharov. Offering glimpses of the prayer-life and witness that undergirds theological endeavour, some authors approach the topic in a deeply personal way while others express the unity of prayer and the theologian in a traditionally scholarly manner. No matter what the denomination of the Christian theologian - Greek or Russian Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist - authors demonstrate that the discipline of theology cannot properly be practiced apart from the prayer life of the theologian. The prayer of the theologian shapes her or his approach to theology. Whether it be preaching, teaching, writing or research, the deep soundings of prayer inform and embrace all.
