poe dirty techniques: Dirty Wars John Beck, 2009-12-01 Since World War II, the American West has become the nation?s military arsenal, proving ground, and disposal site. Through a wide-ranging discussion of recent literature produced in and about the West, Dirty Wars explores how the region?s iconic landscapes, invested with myths of national virtue, have obscured the West?s crucial role in a post?World War II age of ?permanent war.? ø In readings of western?particularly southwestern?literature, John Beck provides a historically informed account of how the military-industrial economy, established to protect the United States after Pearl Harbor, has instead produced western waste lands and ?waste populations? as the enemies and collateral casualties of a permanent state of emergency. Beck offers new readings of writers such as Cormac McCarthy, Leslie Marmon Silko, Don DeLillo, Rebecca Solnit, Julie Otsuka, and Terry Tempest Williams. He also draws on a variety of sources in history, political theory, philosophy, environmental studies, and other fields. Throughout Dirty Wars,øhe identifies resonances between different experiences and representations of the West that allow us to think about internment policies, the manufacture of atomic weapons, the culture of Cold War security, border policing, and toxic pollution as part of a broader program of a sustained and invasive management of western space.

poe dirty techniques: How Reliable is Your Product? Mike Silverman, 2012 Traditionally, the way to test a product's reliability was to build it--and then try to break it. As systems and technologies improved, TAAF (Test, Analyze and Fix) methodologies were developed and adopted. In today's global economy, with its short, technologically-intense product life cycles, TAAF cannot suffice. Reliability can no longer be a step or a series of steps in product development; it is something that needs to be acknowledged up front and built into the product from its very conception. Reliability, in other words, must be 'designed in.' Product developers now have many tools--software and hardware--at their disposal for building reliability in from the get go. From the organizational point of view, what better way to design in reliability than to make designers themselves responsible for the reliability of their designs? As Mike Silverman explains in How Reliable is Your Product?, this is why the role of the reliability engineer is changing to one of mentor. Product developers are now responsible for going out and finding the best testing tools and then training the designers on their use, so that designers factor and build in reliability at every stage of product design. Mike has focused on reliability throughout his 25-year career, and has observed the position of reliability in the organization evolve. In this book, he condenses his expertise and experience into a volume of immense practical worth to the engineering and engineering management communities including designers, manufacturing engineers and reliability/quality engineers. Among other things, Mike discusses how reliability fits, or should fit, within the product design cycle. He provides a high-level overview of reliability techniques available to engineers today. He lucidly discusses the design of experiments and the role of failure management. With case studies and narratives from personal experience, Mike discusses optimal ways to utilize different reliability techniques. He highlights common errors of judgment, missteps and sub-optimal decisions that are often made within organizations on the path to total reliability. WithHow Reliable is Your Product? Mike Silverman has delivered what few have done before--a comprehensive yet succinct overview of the field of reliability engineering and testing. Engineers and engineering managers will find much in this book of immediate, practical value.

Since Dylan went electric, listening to rock 'n' roll has often been a surprisingly literary experience, and contemporary literature is curiously attuned to the history and beat of popular music. In The Ink in the Grooves, Florence Dore brings together a remarkable array of acclaimed novelists, musicians, and music writers to explore the provocatively creative relationship between musical and literary inspiration: the vitality that writers draw from a three-minute blast of guitars and the poetic insights that musicians find in literary works from Shakespeare to Southern Gothic. Together, the essays and interviews in The Ink in the Grooves provide a backstage pass to the creative processes behind some of the most exciting and influential albums and novels of our time.   poe dirty techniques: Purity and Contamination in Late Victorian Detective Fiction Dr Christopher Pittard, 2013-05-28 Concentrating on works by authors such as Fergus Hume, Arthur Conan Doyle, Grant Allen, L.T. Meade, and Marie Belloc Lowndes, Christopher Pittard explores the complex relation between the emergence of detective fictions in the 1880s and 1890s and the concept of purity. The centrality of material and moral purity as a theme of the genre, Pittard argues, both reflected and satirised a contemporary discourse of degeneration in which criminality was equated with dirt and disease and where national boundaries were guarded against the threat of the criminal foreigner. Situating his discussion within the ideologies underpinning George Newnes's Strand Magazine as well as a wide range of nonfiction texts, Pittard demonstrates that the genre was a response to the seductive and impure delights associated with sensation and gothic novels. Further, Pittard suggests that criticism of detective fiction has in turn become obsessed with the idea of purity, thus illustrating how a genre concerned with policing the impure itself became subject to the same fear of contamination. Contributing to the richness of Pittard's project are his discussions of the convergence of medical discourse and detective fiction in the 1890s, including the way social protest movements like the antivivisectionist campaigns and medical explorations of criminality raised questions related to moral purity.
poe dirty techniques: Process Cinema Scott MacKenzie, Janine Marchessault, 2019-07-11 Handmade films stretch back to cinema's beginnings, yet until now their rich history has been neglected. Process Cinema is the first book to trace the development of handmade and hand-processed film in its historical and contemporary contexts, and from a global perspective. Mapping the genealogy of handmade film, and uncovering confluences, influences, and interstices between various international movements, sites, and practices, Process Cinema positions the resurgence of handmade and process cinema as a counter-practice to the rise of digital filmmaking. This volume brings together a range of renowned academics and artists to examine contemporary artisanal films, DIY labs, and filmmakers typically left out of the avant-garde canon, addressing the convergence between the analog and the digital in contemporary process cinema. Contributors investigate the history of process cinema – unscripted, improvisatory manipulation of the physicality of film – with chapters on pioneering filmmakers such as Len Lye and Marie Menken, while others discuss an international array of collectives devoted to processing films in artist-run labs from South Korea to Finland, Australia to Austria, and Greenland to Morocco, along with historical and contemporary practices in Canada and the United States. Addressing the turn to a new, sustainable creative ecology that is central to handmade films in the twenty-first century, and that defines today's reinvigorated film cultures, Process Cinema features some of the most beautiful handcrafted films and the most forward-thinking filmmakers within a global context.

Cox, Philip Francis Nowlan, Richard Stockham, Ignatius Donnelly, Owen Gregory, H. G. Wells, E. M. Forster, Fred M. White, Mary Shelley, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, George Griffith, Edwin A. Abbott, Arthur Dudley Vinton, Gertrude Barrows Bennett, Hugh Benson, 2022-11-13 In 'The Greatest of Dystopian Classics of All Time,' the anthology curated and introduced by DigiCat, we embark on an odyssey through a multitude of grim futures portrayed by some of the most iconic names in classic literature. This compendium consists of seminal works that have laid the groundwork for dystopian narratives, including the prescient social commentary of Wells and Shelley, and the ambitious extrapolations of Rand and London. It is noteworthy that the collection encapsulates the evolution of the genre, presenting stories ranging from the disturbingly prophetic to the darkly satirical while maintaining a literary style that seamlessly weaves advanced socio-political themes with groundbreaking speculative thought, fitting neatly into the larger literary context of speculative fiction that challenges the status quo. Edgar Allan Poe, one of the luminary authors featured, contributes 'The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion,' a short story bearing his quintessential Gothic flair. Renowned for his masterful horror and macabre poetry, Poe had an intricate understanding of the human psyche, which is reflected in his foray into apocalyptic fiction. The inclusion of his work alongside such established dystopian narratives underscores the genre's capacity to adapt and thrive across different literary traditions and eras. Poe's fascination with the somber and the grim aligns exceptionally with the tone of dystopian classics, encapsulating the reader in a contemplation of human fragility and the chilling repercussions of societal collapse. This collection is more than a historical artifact; it is a timely reminder of the perennial power of dystopian fiction to mirror our deepest anxieties and caution against potential futures. 'The Greatest of Dystopian Classics of All Time' is recommended for scholars and enthusiasts of classic literature alike. It promises to be a well-spring of inspiration and a stark reflection on the paths humanity might tread, its pages calling to those with a penchant for the thought-provoking and a taste for the prophetic. Engaging with this work is to engage with the minds that laid the philosophical and aesthetic foundations for generations of speculative fiction to come.

poe dirty techniques: Uncle Valentine and Other Stories Willa Cather, 1973-01-01 The seven stories in this volume were written during the ascending and perhaps most triumphant years of Willa Cather's career, the period during which she published nine books, including My Ántonia, A Lost Lady, and Death Comes for the Archbishop. For the most part ironic in tone, these stories are, as Bernice Slote observes, bound by the geometrics of urban life—streets and offices, workers and firms, the business world of New York and Pittsburgh, the cities which by 1929 Willa Cather had known well for over thirty years. In her introduction, Slote discusses their biographical elements, connections with earlier and later work, and the intricate patterns that lie below the lucid, shimmering surface of Willa Cather's prose.
poe dirty techniques: The Cinema of Tod Browning Bernd Herzogenrath, 2008-09-22 As a director, actor, writer and producer, Tod Browning was one of the most dynamic Hollywood figures during the birth of commercial cinema. Known for his fantastic collaborations with Lon Chaney in numerous silents, and for directing the horror classic Dracula and the still-controversial Freaks, Browning has been called the Edgar Allan Poe of the cinema. Despite not entering the profession until he began acting in his early thirties, he went on to helm more than 60 films in a 25-year career. His work continues to influence directors such as David Lynch, John Waters, and Alejandro Jodorowsky. These essays critically explore such topics as the connection between Browning, Poe and Kant; Browning's cinematic techniques; disability; masochism; sound and suspense; duality; parenthood; narrative and cinematic trickery; George Melford; surrealism; and the occult. A Browning filmography is included.
