Someone is in deep trouble in the mountains and the members of Rocky Mountain Rescue are ready to save a life. Playing for Real describes what goes through a rescuer's head, from the excitement of the initial ring of the pager to searching for and finding victims. The rescuer will share with you the challenges of stabilizing and preparing a critically injured victim for evacuation-moving the victim to emergency vehicles (sometimes down hundreds of feet of rock wall), and often dealing with death in remote, difficult terrain. piton real: The Western Cree MASKI PITON'S BAND (Maskepetoon, Broken Arm) of PLAINS CREE v.1 to 1870 Joachim Fromhold, 2015-05-04 MASKI PITON, or Broken Arm, is perhaps the best-known or best publicised Cree Indian Chief, and has had more written about him than any other Chief or historic aboriginal person in Alberta. In spite of this, virtually nothing has been written about - or is known about - his band of the Plains Cree. Much that is known and has been written about him is incomplete and woefully lacking, not having been satisfactorily researched. In fact, the band ranged through a large area from the mountains of the North Saskatchewan to northern Minnesota. In fact, as it turns out, MASKI PITON's band is one of the best documented of the Plains Cree bands and, once we combine the records from Canada and the Untied States, we are able to reconstruct a very accurate record of the history of the band. This is the history of the Band from it's early origins to the reservation period, and is the first documentation of the range of the Plains Cree bands. |

piton real: Opening the Gates Donald Reid, 2018-06-12 How the occupation of a watch factory became one of the iconic labor struggles after May 1968 In 1973, faced with massive layoffs, workers at the legendary Lip watch firm in Besançon, France, occupied their factory to demand that no one lose their job. They seized watches and watch parts, assembled and sold watches, and paid their own salaries. Their actions recaptured the ideals of May 1968, when 11 million workers had gone on strike to demand greater autonomy and to overturn the status quo. Educated by ’68, the men and women at the Besançon factory formed committees to control every aspect of what became a national struggle. Female employees developed a working-class feminism, combating workplace sexual harassment and male control of the union. The endurance of the Lip movement and its appeal through the 1970s came from its rich democratic, participatory culture. The factory workers welcomed supporters and engaged with them, an expression of solidarity between blue-collar and student activists that built on the legacy of 1968. Opening the Gates: The Lip Affair, 1968–1981 is the first account of all facets of the experience, drawing extensively on unpublished materials to reconstruct the vision and practice of those involved. The Lip workers’ struggle was the last widespread expression in France of the belief that creativity and moral autonomy are the driving force of social transformation. It brought about what Sartre called “the extension of the field of possibilities”—not just for workers, but for all those who gave the movement support and meaning. |

This book will reflect current advances in this area, and will address issues of theory and practice with contributions from academia and industry. It is the aim of the book to provide a focus for information on this developing which will be of use to both researchers and practitioners. |
piton real: Pilgrims of the Vertical Joseph E. Taylor, 2010-10-15 Few things suggest rugged individualism as powerfully as the solitary mountaineer testing his or her mettle in the rough country. Yet the long history of wilderness sport complicates this image. In this surprising story of the premier rock-climbing venue in the United States, Pilgrims of the Vertical offers insight into the nature of wilderness adventure. From the founding era of mountain climbing in Victorian Europe to present-day climbing gyms, Pilgrims of the Vertical shows how ever-changing alignments of nature, technology, gender, sport, and consumer culture have shaped climbers’ relations to nature and to each other. Even in Yosemite Valley, a premier site for sporting and environmental culture since the 1800s, elite athletes cannot be entirely disentangled from the many men and women seeking recreation and camaraderie. Following these climbers through time, Joseph Taylor uncovers lessons about the relationship of individuals to groups, sport to society, and nature to culture. He also shows how social and historical contexts influenced adventurers’ choices and experiences, and why some became leading environmental activists—including John Muir, David Brower, and Yvon Chouinard. In a world in which wild nature is increasingly associated with play, and virtuous play with environmental values, Pilgrims of the Vertical explains when and how these ideas developed, and why they became intimately linked to consumerism. |

piton real: Ordeal by Piton Steve Roper, 2003 Cultural Writing. Great routes, great writing. It was a special time, this Golden Age of Yosemite climbing. Virgin walls soared 3,000 feet. Immense pinnacles had golden eagles atop them, but no cairns. The phrase kids in a candy store springs to mind. Excited by such possibilities, climbers who barely knew what they were up against swarmed up new routes, and then, as if to further savor their adventures, put pen to paper. Steve Roper presents fifty-four selections that represent the most interesting and significant literary output about Yosemite climbing from its beginnings, in 1933, until 1974. Sixty-seven photographs and illustrations. |
piton real: Valley Walls Glen Denny, 2016-05-10 Half a century ago a rag-tag group of innovators was building a foundation for modern American rock climbing from a makeshift home base in Yosemite. Photographer Glen Denny was a key figure in this golden age of climbing, capturing pioneering feats on camera while tackling challenging ascents himself. In entertaining short pieces enlivened by his iconic black-and-white images of Yosemite's big wall legends, Denny reveals a young man's coming of age and provides a vivid look at Yosemite’s early climbing culture. He relates such precarious achievements as hauling water in glass gallon jugs up the east face of Washington Column, nailing the 750-foot Rostrum in a punishing heat wave, and dangling overnight on El Capitan’s Dihedral Wall in a lightning storm. Each true tale captures the spirit of historic Camp 4, where Denny and others plan the next big climb while living on the cheap and dodging park rangers. |

piton real: On the Ridge Between Life and Death David Roberts, 2006-12-01 What compels mountain climbers to take the risks that they do? Is it the thrill in the physical accomplishment, in managing to defy the odds, or both -- and why do they continue to do what they do in the face of such great danger? In On the Ridge Between Life and Death, David Roberts confronts these questions head-on as he recounts the exhilarating highs and desperate lows of his climbing career. By the time he was twenty-two, Roberts had already been involved in three fatal mountain climbing accidents and had escaped death himself by the sheerest of luck. And yet, as he acknowledges, few things have brought him more joy than climbing. In a famous essay on the subject written more than twenty years ago, Roberts judged climbing to be worth the risk. He continues to climb to this day, and several of his challenging routes in Alaska have never been climbed since. But in reassessing the emotional costs to himself and to loved ones, he reaches a different conclusion, one that is sure to cause controversy not only in climbing circles, but among adventurers of all kinds. Candid and unflinching, On the Ridge Between Life and Death is a compelling examination of the risks we take in order to feel more alive. |

piton real: Detecting, Modelling and Responding to Effusive Eruptions A.J.L. Harris, T. De Groeve, F. Garel, S.A. Carn, 2016-06-28 For effusive volcanoes in resource-poor regions, there is a pressing need for a crisis response-chain bridging the global scientific community to allow provision of standard products for timely humanitarian response. As a first step in attaining this need, this Special Publication provides a complete directory of current operational capabilities for monitoring effusive eruptions. This volume also reviews the state-of-the-art in terms of satellite-based volcano hot-spot tracking and lava-flow simulation. These capabilities are demonstrated using case studies taken from well-known effusive events that have occurred worldwide over the last two decades at volcanoes such as Piton de la Fournaise, Etna, Stromboli and Kilauea. We also provide case-type response models implemented at the same volcanoes, as well as the results of a community-wide drill used to test a fully-integrated response focused on an operational hazard-GIS. Finally, the objectives and recommendations of the ‘Risk Evaluation, Detection and Simulation during Effusive Eruption Disasters’ working group are laid out in a statement of community needs by its members. |
