pastor gregory toussaint: How Social Movements (Sometimes) Matter David S. Meyer, 2021-05-28 People protest to try to change the world, because they think they can help change the world, and sometimes they do. But not by themselves, and generally not just how and when they want. This incisive book explains how groups of ordinary individuals can affect the world, what makes it possible when it works, and why it sometimes doesn't go to plan. Digging into previous scholarship on social movements, David S. Meyer looks at the origins of social movements, how they contrast with revolutionary campaigns, and assesses the periodic influence of activists on politics, policy, culture, and the way people live their lives. He concludes by stressing the narratives about political change that activists construct and the power that lies in these stories. With sharp insight and a wealth of intriguing cases, this book offers a fuller understanding of the politics and potential payoffs of protest politics. |

pastor gregory toussaint: Why, O God? (Foreword by Randy Alcorn) Larry J. Waters, Roy B. Zuck, 2011-07-07 With two in seven American families affected by disability, the body of Christ has a great opportunity for ministry. This new anthology uniquely points the way, training churches, caregivers, pastors, and counselors to compassionately respond. The book's contributors—ranging from Joni Eareckson Tada and others living with disabilities, to seminary professors, ministry leaders, and medical professionals—do more than offer a biblical perspective on suffering and disability; they draw from very personal experiences to explore Christians' responsibility toward those who suffer. The volume addresses various disabilities and age-related challenges, end-of-life issues, global suffering, and other concerns—all the while reminding readers that as they seek to help the hurting, they will be ministered to in return. This unprecedented work, which includes a foreword by Randy Alcorn, belongs in the hands of every Christian worker and caring individual who is seeking a real-world, biblical perspective on suffering. |
pastor gregory toussaint: Basic Bible Interpretation Roy B. Zuck, 2023-08-15 BASIC BIBLE INTERPRETATION Can the Bible really be understood? Are Old Testament prophecies relevant for today? How can I understand the symbolism of the Book of Revelation? What is the relationship of the Old Testament to the New Testament? Why study Bible interpretation? Dr. Roy Zuck points out that it is essential for understanding and teaching the Bible properly, essential as a step beyond observation, and essential for applying the Bible correctly. He discusses the challenges of Bible interpretation, considers the problems of Bible interpretation, explores the history of Bible interpretation, and defines key terms--all in a practical, down-to-earth way. Though Dr. Zuck's many years of teaching and scholarship are evident in this book, he has written in language understandable to all who are serious about bible study and who want to know better what Scripture means. |

This collection demonstrates the remarkable extent of Savonarola’s contributions to the religious, political, and aesthetic debates of the late fifteenth century. |
pastor gregory toussaint: Men of Mark William J. Simmons, Henry McNeal Turner, 1887 TO PRESUME to multiply books in this day of excellent writers and learned book-makers is a rash thing perhaps for a novice. It may even be a presumption that shall be met by the production itself being driven from the market by the keen, searching criticism of not only the reviewers, but less noted objectors. And yet there are books that meet a ready sale because they seem like Ishmaelites--against everybody and everybody against them. Whether this work shall ever accomplish the design of the author may not at all be determined by its sale. While I hope to secure some pecuniary gain that I may accompany it with a companion illustrating what our women have done, yet by no means do I send it forth with the sordid idea of gain. I would rather it would do some good than make a single dollar, and I echo the wish of Abou Ben Adhem, in that sweet poem of that name, written by Leigh Hunt. The angel was writing at the table, in his vision. The names of those who love the Lord.Abou wanted to know if his was there--and the angel said No. Said Abou, I pray thee, then, write me as one that loves his fellow-men. That is what I ask to be recorded of me. The angel wrote and vanished. The next night It came again, with a great awakening light. And showed the names whom love of God had blessed. And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest. I desire that the book shall be a help to students, male and female, in the way of information concerning our great names. I have noticed in my long experience as a teacher, that many of my students were wofully ignorant of the work of our great colored men--even ignorant of their names. If they knew their names, it was some indefinable something they had done--just what, they could not tell. If in a slight degree I shall here furnish the data for that class of rising men and women, I shall feel much pleased. Herein will be found many who had severe trials in making their way through schools of different grades. It is a suitable book, it is hoped, to be put into the hands of intelligent, aspiring young people everywhere, that they might see the means and manners of men's elevation, and by this be led to undertake the task of going through high schools and colleges. If the persons herein mentioned could rise to the exalted stations which they have and do now hold, what is there to prevent any young man or woman from achieving greatness? Many, yea, nearly all these came from the loins of slave fathers, and were the babes of women in bondage, and themselves felt the leaden hand of slavery on their own bodies; but whether slaves or not, they suffered with their brethren because of color. That sum of human villainies did not crush out the life and manhood of the race. I wish the book to show to the world--to our oppressors and even our friends--that the Negro race is still alive, and must possess more intellectual vigor than any other section of the human family, or else how could they be crushed as slaves in all these years since 1620, and yet to-day stand side by side with the best blood in America, in white institutions, grappling with abstruse problems in Euclid and difficult classics, and master them? Was ever such a thing seen in another people? Whence these lawyers, doctors, authors, editors, divines, lecturers, linguists, scientists, college presidents and such, in one quarter of a century? |

pastor gregory toussaint: Anything of Which a Woman Is Capable Mary M. McGlone, 2017-12-15 The title, Anything of Which a Woman is Capable, comes from Father Jean Pierre Médaille, the Jesuit who brought together the first Sisters of St. Joseph in the mid-seventeenth century. Since 1650, congregations of St. Joseph have grown in Europe, the Americas, India and the Orient, all attracting women who are called to do anything of which they are capable to serve their dear neighbor. This volume tells stories of the foundations of congregations in France and then, beginning in 1836, in the United States. It introduces the reader to intrepid women whose willingness to serve knew no boundaries and whose strong personalities provided an ample match for Church leaders who either encouraged or tried to control their zeal. The copious footnotes make this a valuable addition to the history of Catholic women religious in the United States as well as to the history of Catholicism. |

pastor gregory toussaint: The Pilgrim Church E. H. Broadbent, 2019-05-23 It ought to be obvious to even the casual observer of history that the real story of the church is not the one recorded in secular history. But this classic work demonstrates that the true heart of this amazing drama is not even recorded in church history books. Right from apostolic days there have always been little groups of persecuted believers who just wanted to follow the Lord. Written in an engaging style, this book will thrill your heart with the stories of unknown heroes of the faith. It will spur you on to greater devotion to the Lord Jesus and a deeper concern for His suffering people in many countries today. Originally published in 1931, The Pilgrim Church is considered a modern classic. It provides a comprehensive history of the church from the apostolic age to the twentieth century through the prism of the New Testament church model. A must read for anyone interested in the development of the church and its history. |

pastor gregory toussaint: Reinforcement Learning, second edition Richard S. Sutton, Andrew G. Barto, 2018-11-13 The significantly expanded and updated new edition of a widely used text on reinforcement learning, one of the most active research areas in artificial intelligence. Reinforcement learning, one of the most active research areas in artificial intelligence, is a computational approach to learning whereby an agent tries to maximize the total amount of reward it receives while interacting with a complex, uncertain environment. In Reinforcement Learning, Richard Sutton and Andrew Barto provide a clear and simple account of the field's key ideas and algorithms. This second edition has been significantly expanded and updated, presenting new topics and updating coverage of other topics. Like the first edition, this second edition focuses on core online learning algorithms, with the more mathematical material set off in shaded boxes. Part I covers as much of reinforcement learning as possible without going beyond the tabular case for which exact solutions can be found. Many algorithms presented in this part are new to the second edition, including UCB, Expected Sarsa, and Double Learning. Part II extends these ideas to function approximation, with new sections on such topics as artificial neural networks and the Fourier basis, and offers expanded treatment of off-policy learning and policy-gradient methods. Part III has new chapters on reinforcement learning's relationships to psychology and neuroscience, as well as an updated case-studies chapter including AlphaGo and AlphaGo Zero, Atari game playing, and IBM Watson's wagering strategy. The final chapter discusses the future societal impacts of reinforcement learning. |

pastor gregory toussaint: Future Israel Barry E. Horner, 2007 Future Israel: Why Christian Anti-Judaism Must Be Challenged is volume three in the NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY STUDIES IN BIBLE & THEOLOGY (NACSBT) series for pastors, advanced Bible students, and other deeply committed laypersons. Author Barry E. Horner writes to persuade readers concerning the divine validity of the Jew today (based on Romans 11:28), as well as the nation of Israel and the land of Palestine, in the midst of this much debated issue within Christendom at various levels. He examines the Bible's consistent pro-Judaic direction, namely a Judeo-centric eschatology that is a unifying feature throughout Scripture. Not sensationalist like many other writings on this constantly debated topic, Future Israel is instead notably exegetical and theological in its argumentation. Users will find this an excellent extension of the long-respected NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY. |

pastor gregory toussaint: The Royal Family, Vol 2 Gregory Toussaint, 2022-03-27 In this new devotional, we continue our series on spiritual fatherhood. Having studied the role of spiritual parents in the Kingdom in the first book, we will now present the role of sons and their responsibilities and duties towards their parents. The purpose of this devotional is to describe what spiritual sonship is all about. It is an attitude, a mentality, a status. This book will specifically establish the difference between a slave and a son. In Galatians 4:7, Paul tells us that we are no longer slaves but sons. The apostle goes on to say, Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. If you are a son, you are automatically an heir by the grace of God.Sons who wish to be heirs in the kingdom must connect with their father, be similar to their father, share common thoughts, feel the same way that their father feels, and have the kingdom's interests at heart. This book will finally make us understand that being a son is mostly a matter of heart and spirit. |

pastor gregory toussaint: The Power of Fasting Gregory Toussaint, 2022-05-03 You probably have questions such as: Why fast? What does fasting mean? Why are there all these types of fasting? This booklet provides answers to all the questions you may have about this highly spiritual activity and more.Fasting is an essential part of the life of a believer. The apostle Paul said that he served God in fastings often (2 Cor. 11:27 KJV). It is crucial for a Christian to have a prayer life, otherwise he will never have power. It is fasting that will help you to have this power. On the other hand, there are certain problems for which one must fast in order to find a solution. Jesus himself told his disciples that some demons would not come out except by prayer and fasting. (Matthew 17:21).In this booklet we will discover what fasting is. We will see the difference between fasting and other activities such as abstinence, dieting or hunger strike. We will also discover the different types of fasting, their meaning and purpose. pastor gregory toussaint: Jezebel Unveiled Gregory Toussaint, 2023-07-31 In Jezebel Unveiled, Gregory Toussaint outlines a fascinating study into the subject of demonology. According to the Bible, demons are fallen angels ruled by Satan, who is called Beelzebub, the Lord of demons (Matt 12: 24 cf. Luke 11:18). Yet few know that one of these spirits is known as Jezebel and that 'she' exists and imprisons people around the world. This demon is powerful and may hold somebody you know under her grip. She uses all sorts of tactics -- sickness, failures, accidents, family breakdown -- to keep people in bondage. When she is operating in life, the victim feels that he or she is fighting an invisible force. In Jezebel Unveiled, one learns how this dark force operates and how to take authority over it. |

pastor gregory toussaint: Recollections of Seventy Years Daniel Alexander Payne, 1968 Daniel Alexander Payne's autobiography, Recollections of Seventy Years, offers a lively account of his experiences from his childhood as an orphan in South Carolina to his maturity as an influential leader in the A.M.E. Church. Payne emphasizes the religious aspects of his life, but touches on other important issues including education, racial prejudice, music, and literature. Payne began his career as a high school teacher for African-Americans (both enslaved and free) in South Carolina until laws forbade their education. Payne migrated north to New York and Philadelphia and became involved with the A.M.E. ministry, yet he carried with him his passion for learning and devotion to educating others. Also notable are Payne's descriptions of his trips to Europe as a representative to the Ecumenical Council. Recollections of Seventy Years provides a vivid portrait of a formidable figure in A.M.E. Church history. |
pastor gregory toussaint: A Systematic Theology of the Christian Religion James Oliver Buswell, 1962 Formerly issued in two volumes, this comprehensive study provides scholarly answers to a whole series of theological questions. Dr. Buswell's experience in teaching and writing has fitted him eminently for this work. His theological position is conservative, orthodox, evangelical, and his theological studies have been enriched and enlightened by a thorough background in the philosophical and social sciences. Here is a work already established as an important contribution to the literature dealing with systematic theology. While designed especially for class study in Theological seminaries and Bible colleges, the work is readable and interesting for the intelligent layman who has no technical training in Greek or Hebrew. Every non-English word is translated, and there is a considerable amount of original translation to make clear the Scriptural meaning of the passages under discussion. Particular features of this systematic theology are: (1) Emphasis upon the value of inductive evidences; (2) Insistence upon the dynamic nature of God's immutability; (3) Relation of creation records to the plan of salvation; (4) Relation of miracles to works of providence; (5) Details of the study of the person and the nature of Christ in His incarnation; (6) Presentation of the substitutionary atonement with emphasis upon the fact that Christ is not a third party but that He. as the Mediator, both God and man, is the party sinned against in all human sin; (7) Emphasis upon the purity of the visible church as a divinely ordained unit of disciple for the maintaining of the purity of the Sacraments and of the proclamation of the Gospel . Constructive Scriptural synthesis, rather than the pursuit of varying opinions, has been the background against which this discussion has developed. Here is a work that will remain a basic text for coming generations of theological students. |
