This technique involves the injection of selected microorganisms into the reservoir and the subsequent stimulation and transportation of their in situ growth products, in order that their presence will aid in further reduction of residual oil left in the reservoir after secondary recovery is exhausted. Although unlikely to replace conventional microbial enhanced oil recovery, this unique process seems superior in many respects. Self-duplicating units, namely the bacteria cells, are injected into the reservoir and by their in situ multiplication they magnify beneficial effects.This new approach to enhancement of oil recovery was initiated in 1980 and the first results were published in the proceedings of two international conferences. This book evolved from these conferences, and was designed to encompass all current aspects of microbial enhanced oil recovery: the development of specific cultures, increase of the population for field application, various methods for field applications and the results, and the environmental concerns associated with this newly developed technology. It provides a comprehensive treatise of the subject, and is arranged to show the laboratory development of microbes suited to microbial enhanced oil recovery and the perpetuation of the special cultures in a petroleum reservoir. Thus, this book has specific usefulness in the laboratory, the oilfield and the classroom. Dr. Kostecki Serves As Executive Director For The Association For The Environmental Health Of Soils (Aehs) And Was The Scientific Advisor For The Workshop On Assessment And Remediation Of Oil Contaminated Soils Held In Kuwait 18-22 March 1995.Dr. Manaf Behbehani Obtained His B.S. In Biology From The University Of Akron, Usa (1969) And M.S. In Zoology From The Same University (1972). He Continued His Graduate Studies At The University Of New Hampshire Receiving Ph.D. In Marine Ecology And Invertebrates In 1978. Since Then, He Has Been Teaching Ecology And Marine Biology Courses At The Faculty Of Science, Kuwait University. From 1 982-1987, He Held The Post Of Marine Scientist At The Regional Organisation For The Protection Of The Marine Environment (Ropme) In Kuwait. Dr. Behbehani Has Worked On A Number Of Pioneering Research Projects, Namely To Study The Zooplankton Of Kuwaiti Waters And The Western Section Of The Arabian Gulf, And To Study The Distribution, Abundance And Taxonomy Of Marine Invertebrates Living In The Intertidal Zones Of Kuwait. He Has Published Several Scientific Articles And Has Served As External Examiner For Several Masters Thesis. From 1991-1995, Dr. Behbehani Was Vice-Dean For Planning And Laboratories At The Faculty Of Science, Kuwait University And Is Presently Chairman Of The National Biodiversity Committee, State Of Kuwait. He Was The Chairman Of The Scientific Committee For The Workshop On Assessment And Remediation Of Oil Contaminated Soils, The Proceedings Of Which Are Published In This Book. |

Jones, 2012-12-06 Microbiology may be described as one of the younger sciences with its history, as a precise subject, only dating as far back as Pasteur in the mid 1800s and his revelation both of the role of microorganisms in nature and their importance to human welfare. Medical scientists rapidly took up the challenge, with their area of microbiology flourishing and expanding almost in complete isolation from the rest of biology. We now know, of course, that microorganisms have always played an important, if not essential role, in the biosphere with fermented foods and beverages, plant and animal diseases and nutrient cycling foremost in their sphere of activities. Within the last twenty years, microbiology has received two enormous boosts with the developments in microbial genetics and genetic engineering probably being the most influential, and the greater awareness of pollution and environmental sustainability following a close second. In 1990, your editor had the privilege and pleasure of being elected as President of The Association of Applied Biologists in the United King dom and, as the topic for his three-day Presidential Conference, chose 'The exploitation of microorganisms in applied biology'. This meeting stimu lated great interest in a wide range of subject areas, from weed control to nematology, from plant breeding to plant pathology, from mushrooms to mycorrhiza.
