nyc doe health insurance open enrollment 2022: Solved! Curing Your Medical Insurance Problems Adria Goldman Gross Fipc, 2015-10-24 Consumer protection advocate Ralph Nader praised Solved! Curing Your Medical Insurance Problems: Who hasn't been bewildered and outraged by lengthy, inscrutable medical bills and the tricky ways of the health insurers? ....Learn what to watch out for in this volume by authors who know the inside ways of sellers who try to take you to the cleaners. Some say, You get what you pay for. If only this were true! Too often, consumers find themselves paying much more than they expected, getting much less than they bargained for. Medical care is no exception. In their book, the authors show readers how to spot over-charges by providers, under-reimbursements by insurers, and inappropriate denials by insurers and government employees. Furthermore, they presented steps to take to prevent being victimized by the system. And what is the system? In America, it is a hybrid of private healthcare providers, massive insurance companies, and governments at the state and national levels. Unlike Britain with its single-payer National Health System, this public-private mixed-breed creates the need for patient advocate professionals, who take up the cudgels on behalf of the medically disadvantaged and the financially strapped. |

nyc doe health insurance open enrollment 2022: Redesigning America’s Community Colleges Thomas R. Bailey, Shanna Smith Jaggars, Davis Jenkins, 2015-04-09 In the United States, 1,200 community colleges enroll over ten million students each year—nearly half of the nation’s undergraduates. Yet fewer than 40 percent of entrants complete an undergraduate degree within six years. This fact has put pressure on community colleges to improve academic outcomes for their students. Redesigning America’s Community Colleges is a concise, evidence-based guide for educational leaders whose institutions typically receive short shrift in academic and policy discussions. It makes a compelling case that two-year colleges can substantially increase their rates of student success, if they are willing to rethink the ways in which they organize programs of study, support services, and instruction. Community colleges were originally designed to expand college enrollments at low cost, not to maximize completion of high-quality programs of study. The result was a cafeteria-style model in which students pick courses from a bewildering array of choices, with little guidance. The authors urge administrators and faculty to reject this traditional model in favor of “guided pathways”—clearer, more educationally coherent programs of study that simplify students’ choices without limiting their options and that enable them to complete credentials and advance to further education and the labor market more quickly and at less cost. Distilling a wealth of data amassed from the Community College Research Center (Teachers College, Columbia University), Redesigning America’s Community Colleges offers a fundamental redesign of the way two-year colleges operate, stressing the integration of services and instruction into more clearly structured programs of study that support every student’s goals. |

nyc doe health insurance open enrollment 2022: Social Determinants of Health for the Global Aging Population in Pandemic and Disaster Environments Lené Levy-Storms, Mary Beth Morrissey, Marcia G. Ory, Camille Castelyn, Soohyoung Rain Lee, 2025-02-18 From a biopsychosocial perspective, physical and to a lesser extent mental health have been a priority for researchers, policymakers, and healthcare providers relative to social health. The hegemony of physical health weakened during the COVID pandemic as mental and social health also emerged as equally important and at risk at the same time. Not since the 1960s has society attended to the social vulnerabilities of older adults, particularly in institutional settings. For the first time, the urgency of providing care for older adults has transcended physical settings as frontline workers in hospitals, prisons, schools, and other community-based settings, as well as families in their own homes, also emerged as vulnerable. The institutional care workforce faces an ongoing crisis at the same time some countries have restricted migration, posing a threat to in-home and community-based long-term care. COVID has forced healthcare policymakers to prioritize both acute and long-term health issues simultaneously as society tries to regain full functionality. COVID and future natural and unnatural disasters associated with climate change, threats to democracy, discrimination against societal groups based on age, gender, race/ethnicity, religion, and income status promise to challenge us all to acknowledge and act such that our well-being is everybody’s well-being across the life course. We are all aging, and how different age groups fare affects how other age groups fare. |

nyc doe health insurance open enrollment 2022: The Health Care Consumer's Manifesto Deborah Dove Gordon, 2020-02-24 A health care executive at Harvard explains how to become a savvy consumer and get the value we all deserve for our health care spending. This book navigates and demystifies the confusing world of health care shopping. Readers go on a guided tour inside American health care to learn why it is so messy, and who is invested in keeping it that way. The text offers a new vision of how health care could work if it were truly designed to meet consumer needs, creating a call to action on how to demand and help create such a system. A wake-up call to an industry tenuously holding on to the status quo and ripe for true disruption, this book outlines what consumers can do themselves and demand from doctors, hospitals, health plans, and policy makers to get more for their health care spending and, in so doing, reshape the health care system into one we all deserve. Using real and compelling consumer stories intertwined with expert analysis, this book illustrates why it is so difficult to act as an engaged health care consumer in the United States and pulls back the curtain to expose the forces that hold the system in place. |
