The World Health Organization defines dehydration as,“a condition that results from excessive loss of body water”. Dehydration is a vital cause of morbidity and mortality among children globally. Also, each year nearly 760,000 children are diagnosed with diarrheal disease worldwide. Most incidents of dehydration in children are the negative impact of acute gastroenteritis. The most accurate assessment of degree of dehydration depends on the difference between the pre-illness body weight (within last 2 weeks) and present body weight (if a 10 kg child who weighs 9.5 kg has a 500 ml water deficit and results in 5% dehydration). If the recent weight is not available, we may use the history and clinical examination to predict the degree of dehydration in children. |
