ogars: Pittsburg Randy Roberts, Janette Mauk, 2009 Pittsburg was purposely located in the center of the Cherokee-Crawford coal field of southeastern Kansas in 1876. The city's founders intended for the new mining camp to serve as a convenient shipping point for the tons of bituminous coal that would be extracted from the region. Little did the founders anticipate how quickly Pittsburg would become the dominant city in the rapidly industrialized southeastern corner of Kansas and one of the most populous cities in the state. Immigrants from over 50 ethnic groups came to Pittsburg to provide the necessary labor for the deep-shaft coal mines, the railroads, and many other industries. Pittsburg State University, established in 1903 as a manual training school, is one of the most significant features of modern-day Pittsburg and is widely recognized for excellence in academics and athletics. |

Fennell, Racine Heritage Museum, 2014-09-29 When Gilbert Knapp founded Racine in 1834 and the first pioneers settled there, no one had the remotest idea that the wilderness would one day transform into a thriving city. Ideally situated on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Root River, the site was chosen by Knapp because of its harbor potential. The prospect of farming on the level prairies surrounding Racine also attracted many of the areas first settlers. Racine County is especially suited for growing wheat, which immediately became the countys leading agricultural product. The town of Racine quickly became a prosperous center serving the needs of the areas farm population. Even Racines industrial base was founded on wheat; in 1842, J.I. Case invented a wheat thresher that helped Racine to grow into one of the foremost industrial centers in the United States. |

ogars: Wareham Susan Pizzolato, Lynda Ames Byrne, 2002 Wareham nestles along the coast of picturesque Buzzards Bay in southeastern Massachusetts. First visited by Native Americans who made it their summer home, the villages of Wareham and Onset were incorporated as the town of Wareham in 1739. The town's long and varied history includes the development of the salt, iron, shipping, and cranberry industries and the decades of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries when the town provided an exciting resort destination. Many ethnic groups made Wareham their home, including the Cape Verdeans, who contributed to the development of the cranberry industry and brought the richness of their culture to the community. Wareham spans the years from the eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century and includes images of important buildings, many of which no longer exist. The book depicts the numerous early villages for their unique flavor: Tremont, Parker Mills, Lincoln Hill, and Swifts Beach in Wareham; Agawam Village; and Onset's many beaches and neighborhoods, such as the downtown village, Point Independence, and Wicket's Island. Wareham includes rare photographs of downtown Wareham, the Horseshoe Mill, and the Tremont Nail Company, as well as Onset's Victorian casinos and hotels that recall bygone days of seaside splendor. |

The lines were introduced here several years before they were brought to larger cities, such as Baltimore, Boston, and Philadelphia, demonstrating the city's modernization and ingenuity. From its first introduction, Brooklyn had one of the nation's largest urban transit systems. With the advent of streetcars, the population in Brooklyn grew from about 139,000 to over 2.5 million by the time streetcars were retired. The street railway blended mobility with innovation, prompting one-third of New York City's population to call Brooklyn home. |

Originally inhabited by the indigenous Chumash and mapped by Spanish explorers, Guadalupe was first named in the 1840s Mexican land grant honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, the title given to the Virgin Mary. Through the years, waves of immigrants made their way to Guadalupe to take advantage of the fertile soil and unique geographic features, the most prominent of which are the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, which contain some of the tallest sand dunes on Earth and have been visited by locals and tourists for the last century and a half. It was in the 1920s that Hollywood discovered them and began introducing distant audiences to the region through the cinematic tradition that continues today. |

Almost all the material set out in this present work is based on notes taken in the field, and in many cases presented completely new facts. The sources of the information used are listed at the end of the linguistic description of each of the groups of languages dealt with. Since there are so many languages to be covered it would be impracticable to give even an outline of the main features of each of them, so an outline is given of the main characteristics of each separate group. One language is used as the type for each group, for the purpose of listing examples of the nominal prefixes, verbal conjugation, and personal prefixes. Other features are illustrated from whichever language is the most suitable. |

ogars: The Laws and Customes of Scotland, in Matters Criminal George Mackenzie, 2005 Reprint of the first edition of one of the earliest systematic studies of the criminal law. Sir George MacKenzie of Rosenhugh [1636-1691], became notable for his resistance to the pretensions of the Crown, but in 1677, he was made Lord Advocate and in the next few years prosecuted and persecuted Covenanters with such zeal as to earn the title 'The Bloody Mackenzie.' In many cases he strained the law so as to obtain a conviction.: Walker, Oxford Companion to Law 792. He is also well-known for having founded the Advocates Library, now the national law library for Scotland. In contrast to Mackenzie's behavior on the bench, the Laws and Customes is notably moderate, especially in the sections dealing with witchcraft. |

ogars: Hounds of the Road Carlton Jackson, 1984 The bus system that came to be known as the Greyhound Bus Company was founded by Carl Eric Wickman, an enterprising Swede of Hibbing, Minnesota. The first bus was a seven-passenger Hupmobile touring car that was used to transport miners across the Mesaba Iron Range to and from work. Wickman was soon joined by another Swede, Andrew Anderson, and they began operating in earnest the route from a saloon in Hibbing to the fire-hall in Alice. From this lowly beginning grew the Greyhound Corporation, a multi-million dollar company which, through the years, has owned everything from a chain of hamburger restaurants to a soap company. |
