outlines of biochemistry download: Basic Concepts in Biochemistry Hiram F. Gilbert, 1992 A new addition to the PreTest product line, this review book covers only those topics in biochemistry which, through the author's experience, market research and in-depth reviewing were viewed by medical students as being most difficult to comprehend. The text is organized by general concepts, which are then subdivided in order of increasing complexity. Each section begins with a short summary of key points. The book's unique approach stresses the mastering of fundamental concepts instead of just the memorization of facts. Thus the student is encouraged to reason through problems, and to better retain what he/she learns in the course. This text can be used in concert with the sixth edition of PreTest Biochemistry to form an excellent review source for students taking biochemistry exams or Part I of the National Board Exam. |

outlines of biochemistry download: Molybdenum E.R. Braithwaite, J. Haber, 2013-10-22 Molybdenum is an element with an extremely rich and interesting chemistry having very versatile applications in various fields of human activity. It is used extensively in metallurgical applications. Because of their anti-wear properties, molybdenum compounds find wide applications as lubricants - particularly in extreme or hostile environmental situations. Many molybdates and heteropolymolybdates are white and therefore used as pigments. In addition, they are non-toxic and act as efficient corrosion inhibitors and smoke suppressants. Hydroprocessing of petroleum is one of the largest industries employing heterogeneous catalysts. Molybdenum catalysts have shown great promise in the liquefaction of coal and this may develop into one of its most important catalytic uses. The use of molybdenum compounds in homogeneous catalysis is also significant.Three important classes of molybdenum compounds in the solid state are reviewed, viz., oxides, sulphides and halides. The role of molybdenum in inorganic catalysis and enzymes receives prominent mention because of their impact on the progress of science and technology. Further biochemical and enzymic factors are discussed in separate chapters and their reaction to agriculture and animal husbandry.A new classification of covalent compounds which abandons the traditional oxidation state concept allows a powerful approach to the organisation of the complex and rich chemistry of molybdenum. Dramatic colour diagrams of abundances of molybdenum compounds provide broad insights into the important features and trends in the chemistry of molybdenum including reactivity and mechanism. The book is intended for use mainly as a research monograph by the many workers who may encounter molybdenum chemistry or who are looking for its application and potential uses in different technological fields. However, it will also serve as an advanced text for university lecturers and postgraduate students interested in inorganic, physical and industrial chemistry, chemical technology or biochemistry and biotechnology. |

outlines of biochemistry download: Biochemistry of the Essential Ultratrace Elements Earl Frieden, 2012-12-06 The remarkable development of molecular biology has had its counterpart in an impressive growth of a segment of biology that might be described as atomic biology. The past several decades have witnessed an explosive growth in our knowledge of the many elements that are essential for life and maintenance of plants and animals. These essential elements include the bulk elements (hydro gen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur), the macrominerals (sodium, potas sium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and phosphorus), and the trace elements. This last group includes the ultra trace elements and iron, zinc, and copper. Only the ultratrace elements are featured in this book. Iron has attracted so much research that two volumes are devoted to this metal-The Biochemistry of Non-Heme Iron by A. Bezkoravainy, Plenum Press, 1980, and The Biochemistry of Heme Iron (in preparation). Copper and zinc are also represented by a separate volume in this series. The present volume begins with a discussion of essentiality as applied to the elements and a survey of the entire spectrum of possible required elements. |

outlines of biochemistry download: Muscle Contraction Clive R. Bagshaw, 2012-12-06 The student of biolo, gical science in his final years as an undergraduate and his first years as a graduate is expected to gain some familiarity with current research at the frontiers of his discipline. New research work is published in a perplexing diversity of publications and is inevitably concerned with the minutiae of the subject. The sheer number of research journals and papers also causes confusion and difficulties of assimilation. Review articles usually presuppose a background knowledge of the field and are inevitably rather restricted in scope. There is thus a need for short but authoritative introductions to those areas of modern biological research which are either not dealt with in standard introductory textbooks or are not dealt with in sufficient detail to enable the student to go on from them to read scholarly reviews with profit. This series of books is designed to satisfy this need. The authors have been asked to produce a brief outline of their subject assuming that their readers will have read and remembered much of a standard introductory textbook of biology. This outline then sets out to provide by building on this basis, the conceptual framework within which modern research work is progressing and aims to give the reader an indication of the problems, both conceptual and practical, which must be overcome if progress is to be maintained. |

outlines of biochemistry download: Phosphorus D.E.C. Corbridge, 1980-01-01 Studies in Inorganic Chemistry 2, Phosphorus: An Outline of Its Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology, Second Edition deals with the organic, inorganic, biochemical, physical, environmental, and technical aspects of phosphorus chemistry. This book is composed of 11 chapters and starts with a brief background of phosphorus with the recognition of three major allotropic modifications of elemental phosphorus. The chemical composition of phosphorus is analyzed as containing either three, four, five, or six oxygen atoms linked to a central phosphorus atom. Simple phosphorus nitrides and other related compounds are also dealt with, including compounds with P-NH2 linkages, P-NF2 linkages, and amides with P-N and P-C linkages. One kind of orthophosphate esters is analyzed, because it is numerous, involved in many life processes, and has various applications in industry and the sciences. Phosphorus sulfur compounds, polyphosphines, ring compounds, and high polymers are also described. This book further discusses the production through the combination of phosphine with borane that gives rise to more varieties of possible phosphorus-boron hydrides, and then explains the simplest but a hypothetical compound known as H2b-Ph2. Attention is also given to the preparation and study of metal-coordination compounds, of which the P atom retains at least an approximate tetrahedral bond configuration. Finally, the chemical methods for the detection and estimation of phosphorus in a compound are explained, where a prior oxidation and/or hydrolysis should first be considered. This text is intended for university undergraduate levels in the discipline of general chemistry. This book can also be a useful reference for research workers and technologists dealing with phosphorus chemistry. |
outlines of biochemistry download: Enzyme Chemistry Colin Suckling, 2012-12-06 As the first edition of this book was going through the publication process, a revolution was taking place in the technologies available for the study of enzymes. The techniques of molecular biology, especially in genetic engineering of organisms and in site specific mutagenesis of genes, were established and were being brought into use to solve many problems in in enzymology. Added to these fundamental and applied science, not least advances the possibility of generating catalysts from antibodies has become a topic of major interest. These major innovations have changed the emphasis of much bioorganic research; whereas in the past, the protein was often the 'sleeping partner' ina study, its detailed function is now the major focus of scientific interest. Similarly in industry, the potential of genetically manipulated organisms to satisfy the needs for the production of chemicals and foodstuffs has been widely recognised. The second edition of 'Enzyme Chemistry, Impact and Applications' takes on board these new develop ments whilst maintaining the overall aims and views of the first edition. Many of the chapters have been completely rewritten to take account of advances in the last five years especially with regard to the impact of biologically based technologies. Although the book continues to approach its subject matter from the point of view of the chemist, the increased interdisciplinary content of much modern science will be obvious from the discussion. |
