orths: The Way of All Flesh Samuel Butler, 2000-11-01 Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all time Samuel Butler was among the most wide-ranging of the accomplished crew of late Victorian writers to which be belonged -- a forceful controversialist in the debates that surrounded Darwin's theory of evolution, a painter who sometimes exhibited at the Royal Academy, an idiosyncratic critic and a gifted travel writer, and even, in his early years, a highly successful sheep farmer in New Zealand. He was also, as The Way of All Flesh, his deterministic tale of the havoc wrought by genetic inheritance, suggests, one of the great British masters of the novel of ideas. |
orths: From Desert Sands to Golden Oranges Helmut Glenk, 2005-02-02 This book is an important episode in the history of the development and modernisation of Palestine in the latter 19th and the first half of the 20th Centuries. It portrays the significant contribution made by a small group of German settlers from Wuerttemberg in southern Germany during their 80 years in Palestine. This book focuses on the settlement of Sarona which was established as an agricultural settlement on the outskirts of Jaffa in 1871. Today the former Sarona village is an inner suburb of the bustling city of Tel Aviv, Israel. The achievements of the German settlers, before the first significant Jewish immigration in the 1880s, demonstrated that European settlement was possible in the Holy Land. The settlers of Sarona left a proud heritage in the Holy Land, Palestine and Israel. Their buildings, their enterprises and their agricultural ventures will forever be remembered as having contributed significantly to the modernisation of Palestine and ultimately to the benefit of Israel. Testimonials This fascinating account is a significant addition to the understanding of the Templer phenomenon that has left a noteworthy mark on the landscape of Israel until today. Dr. Yaron Perry, Head of the Schumacher Institute, University of Haifa, Israel ...an outstanding literary achievement... Peter Lange, President, Temple Society, Stuttgart, Germany This well-researched book documents the history of the German Temple Society settlement at Sarona in Palestine. It is a fascinating and moving story of a settlement twice disturbed by war. The narrative is most readable and well-documented. The book stands as a memorial to the faith and achievements of the settlers. Michael Ramsden, former Dean and Professor at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia ...a live picture of the colony, its cultural faces, the material culture, and the historical context... Dr. Danny Goldman, Architect and University Lecturer, Tel Aviv, Israel ...a privilege to read this fine book... Dr. Charlotte Laemmle, Melbourne, Australia This book is an especially important contribution towards the history of Palestine. The swabian Templer settlement of Sarona was the first modern agricultural settlement in Palestine and was reputed to be a model settlement by the Jewish immigrants. Dr. Jakob Eisler, Historian, Haifa, Israel |

orths: Impact Spectropolarimetric Sensing Sergi Kazantsev, Natalia M. Firstova, Alexander G. Petrashen, 2012-12-06 This book arises from the significant quantity of original results in the field of impact spectropolarimetry, mainly for solar flare studies, and the evident potential applications of this technique to environmental physics, astrophysics, and hot plasma. This is a practically oriented book, describing theoretical fundamentals and implementation of this new interdisciplinary remote sensing technique. A basic phenomenon for impact spectropolarimetric sensing is the polarization ofthe electron shells of an ensemble of free atomic particles (atoms, ions, molecules) due to collisional interaction. Slow collisions in the presence of internal anisotropies in the relative velocity space inside any ionized medium, as well as bombardment of a diluted gas by fast precipitating light projectiles, are analyzed in detail as principal impact polarization mechanisms. Impact spectro polarimetric sensing incorporates state-of-the-art theoretical methods of colli sional physics in combination with reliable polarimetric measurements. This technique is illustrated by the new quantitative sensing of energy transport to the upper region of the chromosphere during solar flares, making use of ground based solar spectropolarimetric observations. Apart from general astrophysical and solar-terrestrial significance, a solar flare, the brightest nonthermal phenomenon, is a good candidate for the demonstration of new opportunities of impact spectropolarimetry. New astrophysical achievements of quantitative spectropolarimetry are particularly considered in this book. The theoretical part presents a quantum mechanical description of impact polarization and the spectropolarimetric manifestations for different energies of the colliding partners. |
