In diesem Buch geht es darum, analog dem von mir bereits im selben Verlag veröffentlichten Buch 299 Schiffe und ihre Geschichten, die Geschichte der Luftfahrt anhand von 199 ausgewählten Fluggeräten darzustellen. Wie meine Leser(innen) es gewohnt sind gibt es zu jedem Fluggerät ein Bild, eine Beschreibung und eine Story. Manchmal ist es nur eine kleine Anekdote und manchmal würde es den Rahmen dieses Buches sprengen, wenn man die ganze Geschichte ausführlich behandeln würde. Millionen von Menschen verloren beim Fliegen oder durch den Einsatz von Fluggeräten ihr Leben. Auch ihrem Andenken ist dieses Buch gewidmet! Wir starten im Jahr 1783 mit der Ballonfahrt. Diese alte Art der Fortbewegung in der Luft hat bis heute nichts von seiner Faszination eingebüßt. 1891 folgt Otto Lilienthal den Spuren von Abbas Ibn Firnas. Das heutige Gleitschirmfliegen hat mit dieser Art von Flug zwar kaum noch etwas gemeinsam, jedoch folgen dem Gleitprinzip die Segelflugzeuge, von denen einige in diesem Buch vorgestellt werden. Mit den simplen Raketen von 1232, die die Pferde der Mongolen erschrecken sollten, haben die heutigen High-Technology-Modelle nur noch das Rückstoßprinzip gemeinsam. Die Ingenieure des 20. und 21. Jahr-hundert konstruieren Flugzeuge und Hubschrauber, die auch fliegen, im Gegensatz zu da Vincis Modellen. Die Daten und Angaben in diesem Buch sind auf dem Stand von 2017/2018. Auch wenn der Großteil der Angaben noch lange gültig sein wird, mögen sich einige Werte (Rekordhalter, Außerdienststellung, Modellvarianten und Ausstattung) im Laufe der Zeit ändern.
