  olf 8 pensacola fl: The Ecozones of the World Jürgen Schultz, 2013-06-29 The preliminary work on this book goes back to lectures and seminars which I held on the subject of an ecological division of the world at the Geographical Department ofthe Aachen University of Technology (RWTH Aachen). The idea of presenting this material in book form arose as I became aware that no modern compendium exists, in either German or English (or in any other language, as far as I know), which could have aided me in preparing these courses or would have helped the participating students to review the material presented in the classroom. Existing studies on major land ecosystems, some of which are highly de tailed, have been published over the past 15 years by firms such as the Springer Verlag (Ecological Studies), the Cambridge University Press (International Biological Programme) and the Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company (Ecosystems of the World); all suffer from the fact that individual aspects (mainly botanical-ecological ones) are given the utmost consideration, while other aspects (often pedological and geomorphological ones) are almost entirely neglected. Furthermore, it is most aggravating that the various studies have failed to establish consistent terminology, units of measurement, and organization of the data for all of the global ecosystems, thus making it difficult even for the knowledgeable reader to make comparisons. The individual nature of each ecozone therefore remains unclear, since it is precisely these differences that allow those characteristics peculiar to a specific ecozone to be unmistakably recognized.

Rainier Engelhardt, 2012-12-06 This book represents the proceedings of the first major international meeting dedi cated to discuss environmental aspects of produced water. The 1992 International Pro duced Water Symposium was held at the Catamaran Hotel, San Diego, California, USA, on February 4-7, 1992. The objectives of the conference were to provide a forum where scientists, regulators, industry, academia, and the enviromental community could gather to hear and discuss the latest information related to the environmental considerations of produced water discharges. It was also an objective to provide a forum for the peer review and international publication of the symposium papers so that they would have wide availability to all parties interested in produced water environmental issues. Produced water is the largest volume waste stream from oil and gas production activities. Onshore, well over 90% is reinjected to subsurface formations. Offshore, and in the coastal zone, most produced water is discharged to the ocean. Over the past several years there has been increasing concern from regulators and the environmental commu nity. There has been a quest for more information on the composition, treatment systems and chemicals, discharge characteristics, disposal options, and fate and effects of the produced water. As so often happens, much of this information exists in the forms of reports and internal research papers. This symposium and publication was intended to make this information available, both for open discussion at the conference, and for peer review before publication.

Haldon, 1993 In this groundbreaking critique of both traditional and Marxist notions of feudalism and of the pre-capitalist state, John Haldon considers the configuration of state and social relations in medieval Europe and Mughal India as well as in Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire. He argues that a Marxist reading of the pre-capitalist state can take account of the autonomy of power relations and avoid economic reductionism while still focusing on the forms of tribute which sustained the ruling power. Haldon explores the conflicts to which these gave rise and shows the Ottoman state elite, often held to be a clear example of independence from underlying social relations, to be deeply enmeshed in economic relationships and the extraction of tribute. Haldon argues that feudalism was the specifically European form of a much more widely diffused tributary mode, whose characteristic social relations and structural constraints can be seen at work in the Byzantine, Ottoman and Mughal empires as well. While acknowledging the range of ideological and cultural variation within and between these examples of the tributary mode, Haldon denies the thesis that such “superstructural” variations themselves yielded fundamentally contrasting social relations.
