This report presents a new fuel sampling method, called the photoload sampling technique, to quickly and accurately estimate loadings for six common surface fuel components (1 hr, 10 hr, 100 hr, and 1000 hr downed dead woody, shrub, and herbaceous fuels). This technique involves visually comparing fuel conditions in the field with photoload sequences to estimate fuel loadings. Photoload sequences are a series of downward-looking and close-up oblique photographs depicting a sequence of graduated fuel loadings of synthetic fuelbeds for each of the six fuel components. This report contains a set of photoload sequences that describe the range of fuel component loadings for common forest conditions in the northern Rocky Mountains of Montana, USA to estimate fuel loading in the field. The science of wildland fire is incomplete, however. Even the simplest fire behaviours – how fast they spread, how long they burn and how large they get – arise from a dynamical system of physical processes interacting in unexplored ways with heterogeneous biological, ecological and meteorological factors across many scales of time and space. The physics of heat transfer, combustion and ignition, for example, operate in all fires at millimetre and millisecond scales but wildfires can become conflagrations that burn for months and exceed millions of hectares. Wildland Fire Behaviour: Dynamics, Principles and Processes examines what is known and unknown about wildfire behaviours. The authors introduce fire as a dynamical system along with traditional steady-state concepts. Burton, 2025-04-10 Global forest management is now grappling with ways to address the many dimensions of global change, including a warming climate and increasing forest disturbance from fires and pest outbreaks, along with changes in public values. However, the dominant forest management paradigms still assume a constant and predictable world in which command-and-control (i.e., treating long-lived forests much like short-lived agricultural crops) and single-value (i.e., timber) optimization still prevail. This novel text argues for new approaches to forest management that focus on resilience and embracing adaptability to the changing socio-ecological environment as it unfolds. Resilience is the ability of a system to maintain its essential attributes (in the form of composition, structure, and/or function) in response to stress, disruption, or disturbance. Managing a system for resilience places an emphasis on persistence rather than growth, efficiency, or profitability, which can be fulfilled by enhancing the capacity to resist change (i.e., robustness) or by enhancing the capacity to incorporate change in desirable directions (i.e., flexibility), or a combination of the two. Resilient Forest Management develops many of the same resilience-enhancing strategies for protected areas, multi-purpose forests, and timber production lands, but with different degrees of emphasis.
