oxford english ielts speaking: Teaching and Researching: Speaking Rebecca Hughes, 2013-11-04 Speaking is a dynamic, interpersonal process and one that strongly influences how we are perceived by others in a range of formal and everyday contexts. Despite this, speaking is often researched and taught as if it is simply writing delivered in a different mode. In Teaching and Researching Speaking, Rebecca Hughes suggests that we have less understanding than we might of important meaning-making aspects of speech such as prosody, gaze, affect, and the ways speakers collaborate and negotiate with one another in interaction. This thoroughly revised and updated second edition looks to the future of the field, offering: A new chapter on assessment, discussing 'high stakes' oral language testing contexts such as immigration New material considering access to spoken data via the worldwide web and new technologies that allow neurolinguistic insights formerly hidden from view Summaries and case studies to help the reader understand how to approach researching speaking and encourages practitioners to question the models of speaking that they are using in their classrooms. Reviewing materials and assessment practices in the light of current knowledge about spoken language, and highlighting areas for new work and collaboration between researchers and practitioners, this book will be a valuable resource for anyone involved in language teaching. |

oxford english ielts speaking: The Oxford English Dictionary Oxford University Press, 1989 The Oxford English Dictionary is the ultimate authority on the usage and meaning of English words and phrases, and a fascinating guide to the evolution of our language. It traces the usage, meaning and history of words from 1150 AD to the present day. No dictionary of any language approaches the OED in thoroughness, authority, and wealth of linguistic information. The OED defines over half a million words, and includes almost 2.4 million illustrative quotations, providing an invaluable record of English throughout the centuries. The 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. The OED has a unique historical focus. Accompanying each definition is a chronologically arranged group of quotations that trace the usage of words, and show the contexts in which they can be used. The quotations are drawn from a huge variety of international sources - literary, scholarly, technical, popular - and represent authors as disparate as Geoffrey Chaucer and Erica Jong, William Shakespeare and Raymond Chandler, Charles Darwin and John Le Carré. In all, nearly 2.5 million quotations can be found in the OED . Other features distinguishing the entries in the Dictionary are authoritative definitions of over 500,000 words; detailed information on pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet; listings of variant spellings used throughout each word's history; extensive treatment of etymology; and details of area of usage and of any regional characteristics (including geographical origins). |

oxford english ielts speaking: Beyond Concordance Lines Pascual Pérez-Paredes, Geraldine Mark, 2021-12-15 In over 30 years of data-driven learning (DDL) research, there has been a growing sophistication in the ways we collect, analyse, and put corpus data to use. This volume takes a three-fold perspective on DDL. It first looks at DDL and its role in informing language learning theory and how it might shed light on the language development process; secondly it addresses how DDL can help us characterise learner language and inform teaching accordingly, and thirdly it showcases practical applications for the use of DDL in classrooms. The contributors to this volume examine a variety of instructional settings and languages across the world. They reflect on theoretical, methodological and classroom implications using both novel and established language learning theories, natural language processing (NLP), longitudinal research designs, and a variety of language learning targets. The present volume is an invitation from some of the leading researchers in DDL to reflect on the research avenues that will define the field in the coming years. |
oxford english ielts speaking: English Pronunciation Models Katarzyna Dziubalska-Kołaczyk, Joanna Przedlacka, 2008 The choice of a pronunciation model for the 21st century learner has become a major issue of debate among applied linguists concerned with teaching English. The standard pronunciation models - Received Pronunciation and General American - have recently been confronted with a new proposal of a Lingua Franca Core (LFC) or English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), put forward as a didactic priority in teaching English pronunciation to foreigners. This volume, which includes selected contributions from the Poznań Linguistic Meetings of 2003 and 2004, does not intend to present yet another model, but sets out to place the teaching and learning of English pronunciation in the context of the 21st century. As the needs of English users are clearly changing fast in the globalizing world, the question is to what extent, if at all, models of pronunciation have been able to keep up with them, and whether they in fact should do so. Thus, key issues in the integration of pronunciation into English as L2 curricula are explored. |

oxford english ielts speaking: IELTS Speaking 8.5 Master Plan. Master Speaking Strategies & Speaking Vocabulary for the Real Test, Including 100+ IELTS Speaking Activities Marc Roche, 2020-04-25 I believe in keeping things simple whenever possible, so I'm going to keep this introduction short, so you can focus on the important things. This master plan is simple. Follow it, and you will increase your speaking band score. In this book, you have the tools you need to increase your speaking score to 8.5 by improving your vocabulary, grammar and coherence. I have not included pronunciation guides in the book, as I know that pronunciation comes from hearing English, absorbing the sounds and then practising them. No book can provide this for you unfortunately, and any books that promise to do this are not telling you the truth. The IELTS speaking test is exactly the same for both IELTS Academic and for IELTS general. It lasts for 11 to 14 minutes and consists of three parts.Part one of the IELTS speaking test is basically an introduction for you as the candidate and for the examiner. It gives you both an opportunity to get comfortable and gives the examiner an initial general idea of your level of English. There's no need to feel nervous here. I know that it's very difficult not to feel a little bit nervous but try to think of this as a friendly informal chat with a friend or an acquaintance. The examiner wants you to succeed in the IELTS test, and if you can show your personality and feel relaxed enough to show the examiner your level of English you will succeed. |
oxford english ielts speaking: The Action-oriented Approach Enrica Piccardo, Brian North, 2019-07-24 This book presents the background to the current shift in language education towards action-oriented/action-based teaching, and provides a theorization of the Action-oriented Approach (AoA). It discusses the concepts and theories that paved the way for the AoA and explores their relevance for the way language education is conceived and implemented in the classroom. In the process, it revisits the concept of competence and discusses the dynamic notions of mediation and plurilingualism. The authors explain the way in which the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and its recent update, the CEFR Companion Volume, broaden the scope of language education, in particular in relation to the actional turn. The book provides scholars and practitioners with a research-informed description of the AoA, explains its implications for curriculum planning, teaching and assessment, and elaborates on its pedagogical implications. |
