nyp empower: Child Rights in India Asha Bajpai, 2018-02-15 Legislation is one of the most important tools for empowering children. It reflects the commitment of the state to promote an ideal and progressive value system. Recent years have seen several key developments in the law, policy, and practice related to child rights. Significantly, with the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, a rights-based approach has acquired prominence in the child rights discourse across the world. The book analyses the laws in the light of court judgments and policy initiatives taken in India. It also examines the interventions and strategies employed by non-governmental organizations in recommending legislative reforms in support of children. This fully revised third edition focuses on the new legal developments in India—such as the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015; the new Central Adoption Resource Agency guidelines; the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009; and the National Food Security Act, 2013—thus attempting to integrate the law in theory and field practice. |
nyp empower: African Youth during the COVID-19 Pandemic Ibrahim Bangura, Cyril Obi, Irene D Mngutyo, 2025-07-22 This book investigates the lived experiences of Africa’s youth during the COVID-19 pandemic, tracing its impact on their mobilities, freedoms, and livelihoods. Bringing together diverse perspectives from across the continent, the book interrogates how African youth expressed their agency in urban spatial terms during the pandemic, by coping with, adapting, and responding to the deepening marginality, insecurity, inequalities and at the same time opportunities they faced. It further examines how young people navigated precarious spaces during the pandemic, and how the reaction of the state undermined or enhanced their experience. It also considers the question of gender and marginalised group dynamics, and discusses the pandemic’s implications for peace, social justice, security, and human development in Africa. The strong empirical evidence presented in this book will be an important resource for researchers across African sociology, health, politics, and peace and conflict studies. |

nyp empower: Africa and the Sustainable Development Goals Maano Ramutsindela, David Mickler, 2019-06-13 The book draws upon the expertise and international research collaborations forged by the Worldwide Universities Network Global Africa Group to critically engage with the intersection, in theory and practice, of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Africa’s development agendas and needs. Further, it argues that – and demonstrates how – the SDGs should be understood as an aspirational blueprint for development with multiple meanings that are situated in dynamic and contested terrains. As the SDGs have substantial implications for development policy and resourcing at both the macro and micro levels, their relevance is not only context-specific but should also be assessed in terms of the aspirations and needs of ordinary citizens across the continent. Drawing on analyses and evidence from both the natural and social sciences, the book demonstrates that progress towards the SDGs must meet demands for improving human well-being under diverse andchallenging socio-economic, political and environmental conditions. Examples include those from the mining industry, public health, employment and the media. In closing, it highlights how international collaboration in the form of research networks can enhance the production of critical knowledge on and engagement with the SDGs in Africa. |

nyp empower: Struggles for Political Change in the Arab World Lisa Blaydes, Amr Hamzawy, Hesham Sallam, 2022-10-11 The advent of the Arab Spring in late 2010 was a hopeful moment for partisans of progressive change throughout the Arab world. Authoritarian leaders who had long stood in the way of meaningful political reform in the countries of the region were either ousted or faced the possibility of political if not physical demise. The downfall of long-standing dictators as they faced off with strong-willed protesters was a clear sign that democratic change was within reach. Throughout the last ten years, however, the Arab world has witnessed authoritarian regimes regaining resilience, pro-democracy movements losing momentum, and struggles between the first and the latter involving regional and international powers. This volume explains how relevant political players in Arab countries among regimes, opposition movements, and external actors have adapted ten years after the onset of the Arab Spring. It includes contributions on Egypt, Morocco, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Algeria, Sudan, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Yemen, and Tunisia. It also features studies on the respective roles of the United States, China, Iran, and Turkey vis-à-vis questions of political change and stability in the Arab region, and includes a study analyzing the role of Saudi Arabia and its allies in subverting revolutionary movements in other countries. |
nyp empower: Borderline Personality Disorder Barbara Stanley, Antonia New, 2017-09-27 Over the past decade, there has been a burgeoning of interest in understanding and treating borderline personality disorder, a disorder characterized by extreme emotional reactivity, impulsivity and serious interpersonal difficulties resulting in frequent loss of relationships. Individuals with borderline personality disorder comprise a substantial proportion of the psychiatric outpatient population, are often seen in emergency rooms and have major functional impairment (e.g. unemployment). Suicide occurs in 3-9% of the population. Furthermore, non-suicidal self injury (e.g. cutting without the intent to die), eating disorders and substance abuse are frequently seen in the context of borderline personality disorder. Not only do the individuals with the disorder suffer , their family members also experience distress and can feel burdened and overwhelmed. Once thought to be nonexistent or a 'grab bag' diagnosis, borderline personality disorder is now understood as a significant emotional disorder with its own neurobiological and psychosocial correlates. At the same time, the disorder is still poorly understood and stigmatized with limited resources available to the novice clinician and mental health professional trainees (e.g. psychiatry residents, psychology doctoral students, social work students). The aim of this primer on borderline personality disorder is to fill this void and provide an accessible, easy-to-use , clinically-oriented, evidenced-based guide for early stage clinicians. We present the most up to data about borderline personality disorder by leading experts in the field in a format accessible to trainees and professionals working with individuals with borderline personality disorder and their family members. The volume is comprehensive and covers the etiology of BPD, its clinical presentation and co-morbid disorders, genetics and neurobiology of BPD, effective treatment of BPD, the role of advocacy and special subpopulations (e.g.forensic)in the clinical management of BPD. |

nyp empower: The Rise of Intelligent Machines Nadya Shaznay Patel, Nitin Indurkhya, 2025-01-24 A fascinating shift marks the journey of technological evolution. Historically, humans were trained to build and operate machines. This education emphasised mechanical skills, logical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, laying the groundwork for the following industrial revolutions. Early machines, from the steam engine to the assembly line, were designed and maintained by skilled human workers, reflecting a one-way relationship where humans were the creators and controllers of machines. Today, we stand on the brink of a new paradigm. Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems and generative AI tools are not just aiding human tasks but are also capable of educating and guiding humans. These intelligent machines can analyse vast amounts of data, provide personalised learning experiences, and generate creative content. The transformation from humans building machines to machines educating humans signifies a profound shift in our technological landscape, impacting industries. As editors, we are united by a profound conviction that bridging the gap between industry and higher education is imperative in the face of rapid advancements in generative AI and innovations across various industries. This connection is crucial to equipping graduates and young professionals with the skills to innovate and excel in the future workforce. Through this multidisciplinary exploration, The Rise of Intelligent Machines aims to provide readers with an understanding of AI's transformative potential and the strategies needed to harness its benefits for industry and education. Every chapter reflects our shared passion for AI’s potential and close industry-higher education collaboration, and we hope that our work inspires you to embrace the opportunities and challenges of the future with curiosity and confidence. |

nyp empower: Youth In South Africa Ariane De Lannoy, Malose Langa, 2021-05-05 South Africa is characterised by a youthful population, and the challenges and possibilities that characterise the young generation are both warning signs and beacons of hope for a nation founded on social justice. Youth in South Africa: Agency, (in)visibility and national development takes stock of the nation's development as it affects young people. Authors offer both personal and professional insights into the ways in which the youth navigate their own pathways to adulthood. These include formal and informal engagements with politics, as well as protest, (un)employment, entrepreneurship, education, religion, experiences with sexuality and violence and a multitude of other life experiences. Contributors paint a picture of the initiative, agency and resilience of the youth, as well as the challenges before them. Authors also identify the state of waithood faced by those unable to make the transition out of youth into full adulthood as a result of their socio-economic circumstances and political context. By engaging these experiences and insights, and primarily informed by the inputs of young people, the authors highlight the limitations of existing youth policies and frameworks. The case is made for policy instruments to be informed by the lived experiences of the youth as they navigate a complex macrosocial environment, and by the messages the youth communicate about the limitations of current approaches. |

nyp empower: Survivor Ziaur Rahman, 2022-12-07 Survivor: My Life as a Rohingya Refugee tells by Ziaur Rahman from his own perspective, start from a moment his family fled to the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, where he was brought up until he was kidnapped and trafficked to Malaysia via Thailand. The story represents the hardship that many Rohingya have undergone, lacking access to basic resources such as food and medicine, as well as being exploited and abused by the camp guards in Bangladesh and wider Bangladeshi society as a whole. Yet on reaching Malaysia he tells the story of how this suffering has continued, and how with his wife and children he has struggled to build a future for himself and his family, within a system that doesn’t care for Rohingya refugees. Ziaur Rahman’s story is also, paradoxically, a story of hope. In the camps in Bangladesh, he dedicated himself to his education and other training programmes with the vision of one day helping his community to improve. When in Malaysia he devoted himself to activism, to help Rohingya refugees access services and to protect them from abuse. In doing so he worked with the UNHCR and other NGOs in the country, even meeting the prime minister in the process and becoming the subject of a documentary film Selfie with The Prime Minister (2017). By doing so, Ziaur Rahman, whilst facing his own hardships and struggling to make a living locally, has done great service to the Rohingya community in Malaysia and around the world, raising the consciousness of the world to the suffering of refugees in host countries, as well as the ongoing atrocities against the Rohingya in Myanmar. Today there are around 100,000 UNHCR-registered Rohingya refugees in Malaysia. Such numbers have been produced by the long history of violent marginalisation of the Rohingya people of Arakan state in Myanmar, as well as the hostile conditions they have found in the refugee camps in Bangladesh which they have fled to. Rohingya refugees have been leaving Bangladesh for countries such as Malaysia in significant numbers from the 1990s onwards. But these numbers increased considerably in the aftermath of a new wave of state violence against the Rohingya in 2012, in a conflict where state forces unleashed a wave of rioting, looting, arson, rape and violence on the Rohingya, leading to a new wave of refugees into nearby countries, particularly Bangladesh, but also to Malaysia via Thailand. The preference of Rohingya refugees for Malaysia lies in the fact that it is a developing and Muslim-majority country, and a country that has regularly spoken up about the sufferings of the Rohingya in Myanmar. The journey to Malaysia and the reception that Rohingya refugees receive, however, is a continuation of the exclusion and violence they are subjected to in their home country. To reach Malaysia many refugees are trafficked aboard boats and then ransomed by traffickers for large amounts of money which they or their families have to pay. These traffickers have often used the border between Thailand and Malaysia as a transit point to hold refugees and move them into Malaysia, in a journey that Ziaur Rahman harrowingly describes in this book. A journey in which refugees risk their lives and undergo horrific forms of treatment and abuse by traffickers, Others have tried to make it to Malaysia directly, undertaking a dangerous journey by sea to escape the violence of life in Myanmar, but have often had their boats pushed back by Malaysian authorities, This has again occurred in recent months during the COVID-19 crisis, as Malaysten forces have refused entry to boats carrying Rohingya refugees, and the refugees have bad to return to Bangladesh. Those Rohingya lucky to make it to Malaysia find, however, that they are far from welcome. Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Convention on the Status of Refugees and does not recognise refugees within its borders or provide protection to them, Thus whilst Malaysia does provide (temporary) shelter for Rohingya communities, these communities continue to be at risk of arrest, detention and extortion by state officials, as well as suffering labour exploitation in the informal labour sector, and they lack access to healthcare as well as education. This fact has become increasingly evident in the wake of the global COVID-19 crisis, with Rohingya refugees in Malaysia struggling to access food and basic services as the country’s economy closed down and with them unable to access state-based relief. At the same time, the Rohingya in Malaysia have increasingly been subjected to scapegoating by elements of the Malaysian population, fuelled their presence in the country and the help they are said to receive from the UNHCR. Today the status of the Rohingya in Malaysia is increasingly precarious and dangerous, but this is only a continuation of decades of insecurity and precarity that the Rohingyas have faced in Malaysia, as well as other countries in the region. |
