nolan cernosek: Grief Connects Us Joseph D. Stern, 2021-05-11 In his exceptionally thought-provoking and moving memoir, neurosurgeon Joseph D. Stern explores how personal loss influences the way physicians relate to patients and their families. How does a doctor who deals with the death of patients on a regular basis confront his own loss when his beloved sister is living out her last days? Despite a career as a neurosurgeon, Joseph Stern learned more about the nature of illness and death after his younger sister, Victoria, developed leukemia than his formal medical training ever taught him. Her death broke down the self-protective barriers he had built to perform his job and led to a profound shift in his approach to medicine. During the year of his sister’s illness, Dr. Stern developed a greater awareness of the needs of patients and their families; of the burdens they carry; of the importance of connection, communication, and gratitude; and of what it means to ask the right questions. Grief Connects Us bridges the gap between patients and doctors, providing a window into their shared concerns. Interspersing reflections from Victoria's journal, stories of patients and colleagues, and insights from experts, Dr. Stern has orchestrated a symphony of voices guiding us toward greater mutual understanding and appreciation of the beauty and fragility of life. No matter which side of the patient-doctor relationship you find yourself on, listening with empathy, a willingness to be vulnerable, and emotional agility are skills we can all develop to improve how we meet difficult, unavoidable challenges.

nolan cernosek: The Future of Aging , 2010-08-17 Just as the health costs of aging threaten to bankrupt developed countries, this book makes the scientific case that a biological bailout could be on the way, and that human aging can be different in the future than it is today. Here 40 authors argue how our improving understanding of the biology of aging and selected technologies should enable the successful use of many different and complementary methods for ameliorating aging, and why such interventions are appropriate based on our current historical, anthropological, philosophical, ethical, evolutionary, and biological context. Challenging concepts are presented together with in-depth reviews and paradigm-breaking proposals that collectively illustrate the potential for changing aging as never before. The proposals extend from today to a future many decades from now in which the control of aging may become effectively complete. Examples include sirtuin-modulating pills, new concepts for attacking cardiovascular disease and cancer, mitochondrial rejuvenation, stem cell therapies and regeneration, tissue reconstruction, telomere maintenance, prevention of immunosenescence, extracellular rejuvenation, artificial DNA repair, and full deployment of nanotechnology. The Future of Aging will make you think about aging differently and is a challenge to all of us to open our eyes to the future therapeutic potential of biogerontology.
nolan cernosek: The Proteins Pt 3 Hans Neurath, 2012-12-02 The Proteins, Third Edition, Volume II is a three-chapter text that highlights the application of methods of organic chemistry to the study of protein structure. Chapter 1 reviews the chemical modification of proteins by group- and site-specific reagents. This chapter also discusses the methods for the chemical modification of proteins and their application to the study of the structure, conformation, and biologic activity of certain proteins. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of peptides by solution methods and the procedures employed for the synthesis of biologically active peptide hormones. This chapter also deals with the many difficulties inherent in the application of the existing synthetic methods and emphasizes the stringent standards that must be maintained for the successful chemical synthesis of naturally occurring polypeptides. Chapter 3 presents the solid-phase methods for the synthesis of peptides on solid supports. Organic chemists and researchers, teachers and undergraduate students will find this book invaluable.

nolan cernosek: Enteropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic E. coli: ecology, pathogenesis and evolution Elizabeth L. Hartland, John M. Leong, Enteropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic E. coli are important causes of gastrointestinal disease worldwide. As part of their pathogenesis, EPEC and EHEC cause a distinctive lesion on the intestinal mucosa known as an attaching and effacing (A/E) lesion. A/E lesion formation requires a type III secretion system that injects multiple effector proteins into the cell. Despite their shared mechanism of intestinal colonization, EPEC and EHEC exhibit substantial differences in epidemiology and clinical disease. In particular, EHEC produces a potent Shiga toxin that is associated with development of the haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), an acute form of renal failure. This Research Topic will examine interactions between attaching and effacing bacteria and the host cell, and discuss EPEC/EPEC ecology, genomics and animal models of disease. Articles will centre on pathogen evolution, novel adhesins, type III effector biology and bacterium-host responses during infection.
