  nikolaus kasimatis: Papers in Economic Theory and the Biological Foundations of Economics Nikolaus Kasimatis, 2015 Chapter 1 gives the introduction to this thesis, describing the three essays that are contained herein. Chapter 2 is joint work with Erik Kimbrough and Arthur Robson. The article investigates the evolutionary foundation for our capacity to attribute preferences to others. It develops a theoretical model of this ability that the authors call Theory of Preferences (ToP), and then shows that ToP yields a sharp, unambiguous advantage over less sophisticated approaches to strategic interaction. The advantage to ToP arises because agents with this ability can extrapolate to novel circumstances information about opponents' preferences that was learned previously. The chapter reports on experiments investigating ToP in a simpler version of the theoretical model. It finds highly significant learning of opponents' preferences, providing strong evidence for the presence of ToP as in the model among subjects. Moreover, scores on standard measures of autism-spectrum behaviors are significant determinants of individual speeds of learning in experiments, so the notion of ToP is significantly correlated with theory of mind as in psychology. Chapter 3 studies the third party provision of information in a dynamic reputation model. Information is sold to consumers by a profit maximizing intermediary with monopoly access to information about a long run firm. The paper characterizes the optimal disclosure rule from the point of view of the intermediary, and shows that if consumers act as price takers in the market for information, then in every equilibrium the intermediary extracts from consumers the highest price possible for information. The resulting equilibrium is inefficient. Chapter 4 extends a matching and bargaining model of decentralized trade first developed by Gale and Sabourian (2005). The extension considers a market in which sellers bring to market several units rather than just one. The article then studies the effect on efficiency of an aversion to complexity among the agents. It shows that complexity aversion can preclude efficient exchange in contrast to the original model by Gale and Sabourian (2005). Allowing an agent to trade several times introduces an important strategic aspect that does not arise when each seller has only one unit for sale. In particular, a several-unit seller must consider, not only the price at which he currently trades, but also the effect of his exchange on future market conditions. A seller with several units thus attempts to manipulate the price in the future by engaging in inefficient trades currently.

  nikolaus kasimatis: Markets and Complexity Nikolaus Kasimatis, 2008 This paper extends the model developed in [9], henceforth (GS). In that paper, decentralized finite markets, in which sellers supply one unit of a non-divisible good and buyers desire one unit of that good, are treated as extensive-form matching and bargaining games. It turns out that in these games there are many inefficient outcomes supported by subgame perfect equilibria. The main contribution of GS is to introduce an equilibrium refinement in which players maintain an aversion to complexity and show that such a refinement eliminates non-competitive outcomes. Here, we admit more general environments by permitting a seller to enter a market with any number of units. The main result is the following. Whether an aversion to complexity eliminates inefficient equilibria in this class of market games depends on supply and how valuations are distributed. There are many finite markets whose complexity averse subgame perfect equilibria preclude efficiency , and hence competitive outcomes, and there are many finite markets that have no simple subgame perfect equilibria. These results hold when the definition of complexity developed in GS is generalized to include a richer class of Markov partitions of the strategy space.

This electrical activity generates an electromagnetic field that propagates outside the heart and reaches the human torso surface, where it can be easily measured. Classical electrocardiography aims to interpret the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) to determine cardiac activity and support the diagnosis of cardiac pathologies such as arrhythmias, altered activations, and ischemia. More recently, a higher number of leads is used to reconstruct a more detailed quantitative description of the electrical activity in the heart by solving the so-called inverse problem of electrocardiography. This technique is known as ECG imaging. Today, clinical applications of ECG imaging are showing promising results in guiding a variety of electrophysiological interventions such as catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.   nikolaus kasimatis: Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Franco Postacchini, 1989-04-24 Up until two decades ago, clinical interest in the etiopathogenetic interpretation of lumbo-radicular syndromes was prevalently concentrated on the pathology of the inter vertebral disc. This vision gradually changed and grew as a result of the affirmation of the concept of pathological narrowing of the osteoligamentous vertebral canal as a cause of compression of the lumbar nervous structures. Finally, in the last ten years, lumbar stenosis has become more and more a subject of current interest not only as a result of problems related to nosography, diagnosis, and therapy, but also as a result of the increasing frequency with which vertebral canal or nerve root canal stenosis syndromes are recognized and treated. At the same time there was a tendency to include in stenotic pathology other pathological conditions responsible for lumbo-radicular syndromes. This led to dilation of the concept of stenosis, which perhaps no longer responded to reality, and which was not useful from a practical point of view. The need to define stenotic pathology and to correctly locate it within the vast field of lumbar pathology inspired the writing of this volume. This monograph gathers many diagnostic and therapeutic concepts matured at our In stitution over the years.
