nathan pyle breathing animations: Ardeshir Mohassess Ardashīr Muḥaṣṣiṣ, 2008 The first publication to include full colour reproductions of the artist's drawings throughout his career; it includes a 1973 interview between the artist and Iranian poet, Esmail Kho'i translated into English for the first time. The catalogue and exhibition it accompanies are co-curated by Shirin Neshat and Nicky Nodjoumi, two well known contemporary Iranian artists who provide a particular perspective on the artist and his subjects Ardeshir Mohassess: Art and Satire in Iran brings together approximately 70 of Mohassess's rarely-seen drawings, on loan from the Library of Congress in Washington DC and from several private collections in the US. Many of these have never been published in a book or catalogue, and several of the early works were censored in his native country. The book reveals this artist's significant impact on both the international art scene and news media. The catalogue (checklist of the exhibition) is organised in two sections: works created before the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and those created after the Revolution. Ardeshir Mohassess has been living in self-imposed exile since 1976; after enduring harassment from his native country's national police, he fled to France. In 1979 he moved to the United States, where he has remained. Today, he is considered to be one of the most significant living Iranian artists. AUTHOR: Shirin Neshat was born in 1957 in Qazvin, Iran. Neshat moved to the United States in 1974. Neshat has exhibited her photography, film, and video works internationally and is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Infinity Award for Visual Art from the International Center for Photography (New York), and First International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennale (Italy). Nicky Nodjoumi was born in Kermanshah, Iran in 1942. After graduating from CUNY in 1975, he returned to Iran with plans to teach art. Soon after the 1979 revolution, Nodjoumi had a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran; the show was labelled anti-revolutionary and he was forced to leave Iran. Hamid Dabashi was born in 1951 in the south-western city of Ahvaz in the Khuzestan province of Iran. He is the Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University in New York, the oldest and most prestigious Chair in Iranian Studies. He is a renowned cultural critic and award-winning author. Esmail Kho'i is a renowned Iranian poet and writer. 83 colour & 3 b/w illustrations |
nathan pyle breathing animations: Learning in the Age of Digital Reason Petar Jandrić, 2017-07-17 Learning in the Age of Digital Reason contains 16 in-depth dialogues between Petar Jandrić and leading scholars and practitioners in diverse fields of history, philosophy, media theory, education, practice, activism, and arts. The book creates a postdisciplinary snapshot of our reality, and the ways we experience that reality, at the moment here and now. It historicises our current views to human learning, and experiments with collective knowledge making and the relationships between theory and practice. It stands firmly at the side of the weak and the oppressed, and aims at critical emancipation. Learning in the Age of Digital Reason is playful and serious. It addresses important issues of our times and avoids the omnipresent (academic) sin of pretentiousness, thus making an important statement: research and education can be sexy. Interlocutors presented in the book (in order of appearance): Larry Cuban, Andrew Feenberg, Michael Adrian Peters, Fred Turner, Richard Barbrook, McKenzie Wark, Henry Giroux, Peter McLaren, Siân Bayne, Howard Rheingold, Astra Taylor, Marcell Mars, Tomislav Medak, Ana Kuzmanić, Paul Levinson, Kathy Rae Huffman, Ana Peraica, Dmitry Vilensky (Chto Delat?), Christine Sinclair, and Hamish Mcleod. |

nathan pyle breathing animations: Feral George Monbiot, 2014-09-26 As an investigative journalist, Monbiot found a mission in his ecological boredom, that of learning what it might take to impose a greater state of harmony between himself and nature. He was not one to romanticize undisturbed, primal landscapes, but rather in his attempts to satisfy his cravings for a richer, more authentic life, he came stumbled into the world of restoration and rewilding. When these concepts were first introduced in 2011, very recently, they focused on releasing captive animals into the wild. Soon the definition expanded to describe the reintroduction of animal and plant species to habitats from which they had been excised. Some people began using it to mean the rehabilitation not just of particular species, but of entire ecosystems: a restoration of wilderness. Rewilding recognizes that nature consists not just of a collection of species but also of their ever-shifting relationships with each other and with the physical environment. Ecologists have shown how the dynamics within communities are affected by even the seemingly minor changes in species assemblages. Predators and large herbivores have transformed entire landscapes, from the nature of the soil to the flow of rivers, the chemistry of the oceans, and the composition of the atmosphere. The complexity of earth systems is seemingly boundless. |
nathan pyle breathing animations: The City of Tomorrow Carlo Ratti, Matthew Claudel, 2016-06-28 Since cities emerged ten thousand years ago, they have become one of the most impressive artifacts of humanity. But their evolution has been anything but linear—cities have gone through moments of radical change, turning points that redefine their very essence. In this book, a renowned architect and urban planner who studies the intersection of cities and technology argues that we are in such a moment. The authors explain some of the forces behind urban change and offer new visions of the many possibilities for tomorrow’s city. Pervasive digital systems that layer our cities are transforming urban life. The authors provide a front-row seat to this change. Their work at the MIT Senseable City Laboratory allows experimentation and implementation of a variety of urban initiatives and concepts, from assistive condition-monitoring bicycles to trash with embedded tracking sensors, from mobility to energy, from participation to production. They call for a new approach to envisioning cities: futurecraft, a symbiotic development of urban ideas by designers and the public. With such participation, we can collectively imagine, examine, choose, and shape the most desirable future of our cities. |

Tbree symposia whoUy devoted to acoustical holography have been held and tbe papers published in book form. nathan pyle breathing animations: International Guide to Student Achievement John Hattie, Eric M. Anderman, 2013-01-17 The International Guide to Student Achievement brings together and critically examines the major influences shaping student achievement today. There are many, often competing, claims about how to enhance student achievement, raising the questions of What works? and What works best? World-renowned bestselling authors, John Hattie and Eric M. Anderman have invited an international group of scholars to write brief, empirically-supported articles that examine predictors of academic achievement across a variety of topics and domains. Rather than telling people what to do in their schools and classrooms, this guide simply provides the first-ever compendium of research that summarizes what is known about the major influences shaping students’ academic achievement around the world. Readers can apply this knowledge base to their own school and classroom settings. The 150+ entries serve as intellectual building blocks to creatively mix into new or existing educational arrangements and aim for quick, easy reference. Chapter authors follow a common format that allows readers to more seamlessly compare and contrast information across entries, guiding readers to apply this knowledge to their own classrooms, their curriculums and teaching strategies, and their teacher training programs. |
