narkhede caste: Faces of Discrimination in Higher Education in India Samson K. Ovichegan, 2015-02-11 This book illuminates the experiences of a set of students and faculty who are members of the Dalit caste – commonly known as the ‘untouchables’ – and are relatively ‘successful’ in that they attend or are academics at a prestigious university. The book provides a background to the study, exploring the role of caste and its enduring influence on social relations in all aspects of life. The book also contains a critical account of the current experiences of Dalit students and faculty in one elite university setting – the University of Shah Jahan (pseudonym). Drawing on a set of in-depth semi-structured interviews, the empirical study that is at the centre of this book explores the perceptions of staff and students in relation to the Quota policy and their experiences of living, working and studying in this elite setting. The data chapters are organised in such a way as to first explore the faculty views. The experiences of students are then examined with a focus on the way in which their caste is still an everyday part of how they are sometimes ‘othered’. Also, a focus on female Dalit experiences attempts to capture the interconnecting aspects of abject discrimination in their university life. Faces of Discrimination in Higher Education in India explores: critical exploration of the Quota System policy and related social justice issues; faculty voices: Quota, caste and discrimination; students’ perceptions and experiences of the Quota policy; being a ‘female Dalit’ student; positioning caste relations and the Quota policy: a critical analysis. This study will be of interest to educational sociologists examining policies in education and analysts of multicultural and South Asian studies. It will also steer pertinent discussions on equality and human rights issues.

narkhede caste: The Kaleidoscope of Gender Joan Z. Spade, Catherine G. Valentine, 2008 I have found Spade and Valentine's Kaleidoscope of Gender to be the most effective reader that I have used in my undergraduate Sociology of Gender class, and I was delighted to see what promises to be an even better second edition that recently arrived. -Linda Grant, University of Georgia In a substantial theoretical introduction, Spade and Valentine move their discussion forward by introducing their kaleidoscope metaphor which is comprised of the prisms of culture...that intersect to produce patterns of difference and systems of privilege. Because it captures the fluidity and uniqueness of the intricate patterns, the kaleidoscope is a valuable analytical tool. Though it enters a terrain already littered with terminology, this prismatic understanding of gender has great potential for transforming current conceptualizations. -Jennifer Keys, North Central College Examining the elusive, evolving construct of gender in a unique text/ reader format An accessible, timely, and stimulating introduction to the sociology of gender, The Kaleidoscope of Gender: Prisms, Patterns, and Possibilities, Second Edition, provides a comprehensive analysis of key ideas, theories, and applications in this field as viewed through the metaphor of a kaleidoscope. This collection of creative articles by top scholars explains how the complex, evolving pattern of gender is constructed interpersonally, institutionally, and culturally and challenges students to question how gender shapes their daily lives. Like the prior edition, the Second Edition maintains a focus on contemporary contributions to the field while incorporating classical and theoretical arguments to provide a broad framework. Integrating a cross-cultural focus and intersectional inquiry, this unique text/reader

narkhede caste: Kirwant Premānanda Gajvī, 2005 Premanand Gajvee tells the story of a little-known sect of brahmans known as kirwants whose religious duty is to perform the last rites at cremations. Marginalized by the entire community in general, and the brahmans in particular, kirwants are treated like polluting outcastes. Based on personal experience that occurred as recently as the 1980s, this play, which deals savagely with a subject carefully kept under wraps, is a severe indictment of an inhuman social system. Kirwant created a sensation in Marathi theatre scene when it was first produced. One of the greatest actors of our theatre, Sreeram Lagoo, taking up the cudgels for a relatively unknown playwright, offered to perform the lead role of the kirwant Siddheshwarshastri. The text is supplemented with a preface by the playwright and a director s note by Shreeram Lagoo. Award-winning playwright, Premanand Gajvee is one of the younger playwrights writing in Marathi today. Several of his plays have been included as texts in undergraduate and postgraduate literature courses in various universities of Maharashtra. M. D. Hatkanangalekar, who has translated and introduced this play, is a leading literary critic and translator, who has taught English at Willingdon College, Sangli.

narkhede caste: The Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India, Book III R. V. Russell, 2015-10-20 Gadaria, Gadri: The occupational shepherd caste of northern India. The name is derived from the Hindi gadar and the Sanskrit gandhara, a sheep, the Sanskrit name being taken from the country of Gandhara or Kandahar, from which sheep were first brought. The three main shepherd castes all have functional names, that of the Dhangars or Maratha shepherds being derived from dhan, small stock, while the Kuramwars or Telugu shepherds take their name like the Gadarias from kuruba, a sheep. These three castes are of similar nature and status, and differ only in language and local customs. In 1911 the Gadarias numbered 41,000 persons. They are found in the northern Districts, and appear to have been amongst the earliest settlers in the Nerbudda valley, for they have given their name to several villages, as Gadariakheda and Gadarwara...

narkhede caste: Martial races Heather Streets, 2017-03-01 This book explores how and why Scottish Highlanders, Punjabi Sikhs, and Nepalese Gurkhas became identified as the British Empire’s fiercest, most manly soldiers in nineteenth century discourse. As ‘martial races’ these men were believed to possess a biological or cultural disposition to the racial and masculine qualities necessary for the arts of war. Because of this, they were used as icons to promote recruitment in British and Indian armies - a phenomenon with important social and political effects in India, in Britain, and in the armies of the Empire. Martial Races bridges regional studies of South Asia and Britain while straddling the fields of racial theory, masculinity, imperialism, identity politics, and military studies. Of particular importance is the way it exposes the historical instability of racial categories based on colour and its insistence that historically specific ideologies of masculinity helped form the logic of imperial defence, thus wedding gender theory with military studies in unique ways. Moreover, Martial Races challenges the marginalisation of the British Army in histories of Victorian popular culture, and demonstrates the army’s enduring impact on the regional cultures of the Highlands, the Punjab and Nepal. This unique study will make fascinating reading for higher level students and experts in imperial history, military history and gender history.
