Ryley, 2012-12-06 Fungal diseases have been with us from antiquity; interest in the chemo therapy of fungal disease has exploded in the past decade. To plan and pro duce a book on the topic of antifungal chemotherapy has come as a personal challenge - and something of an eye-opener - towards the end of my re search career. A landmark publication which still merits reading is Antifungal Chemotherapy (John Wiley & Sons, Chichester, UK), edited by David Speller, which appeared in 1980. However, the fact that ketoconazole, the first of the modern, orally active, wide-spectrum antifungals, attracted no more than two sentences in it indicates just how far we have come in the 1980s. A steady stream of original papers and a number of conference proceedings have chronicled this progress in drug research; outstanding among the latter are the proceedings of an international telesymposium, entitled Recent Trends in the Discovery, Development and Evaluation of Antifungal Agents, edited by Robert Fromtling (J.R. Prous, Barcelona, 1987) and volume 544 of the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, entitled Antifungal Drugs, edited by Vassil St. Georgiev, and containing papers and posters presented at a most enjoyable 3-day conference held at Garden City, New York, in the autumn of 1987. |

The improved results with cancer chemotherapy, es pecially in leukaemias, are leading to a greater prevalence of severe infection in patients so treated, pharmacokinetics of drugs in normal and diseased subjects is receiving increasing attention along with related problems of bioavailability and interactions between drugs. Meanwhile the attack on some of the major bacterial infections, such as gonorrhoea and tubercu losis, which were among the first infections to feel the impact of chemotherapy, still continue to be major world problems and are now under attack with new agents and new methods. From this wide field and the 1,000 papers read at the Congress we have produced Proceedings which reflect the variety and vigour of research in this important field of medicine. It was not possible to include all of the papers presented at the Congress but we have attempted to include most aspects of cur rent progress in chemotherapy. |

Feldman, 2013-11-11 By 1977 it was clear that the thermophilic campylobacters were a major cause of acute bacterial enteritis. In response to that observation an international workshop was convened in Reading, England, and attracted over 130 participants. Many of these individuals resolutely returned for the eighth in the series of biennial international workshops, this time held in Win chester, England, in July 1995. All were surprised at the continued, and even expanding, re search effort in this narrow microbiological field. Such a lasting interest is undoubtedly a reflection of a consistent rise in the incidence of infection, the growing number of closely re lated organisms and disease associations, and an ever-increasing awareness by the public and government agencies of public health and food safety issues. The second workshop in Brussels in 1983 was a forum that demonstrated the growing awareness in the campylobacter community of the existence of campylobacter-like organisms and provided the platform for presentations describing the association of these organisms, now classified in the genus Helicobacter. with gastroduodenal disease. The clinical aspects of the research into helicobacters is now thoroughly covered in several other meetings, and the remit of the international workshop has been expanded to provide a forum for the presentation of the basic microbiological research carried out on these bacteria. In a continuation of this ap proach the remit of the workshop has been further extended to other related organisms, reflect ing that there are many other campylobacter-like organisms still to identify and characterize. |

The capability of some microorganisms to withstand, and often prefer, the harsh conditions found in such environments is helping to define the physicho-chemicallimits of life and in consequence its essential nature. Halophiles are one of the most representative types of extremophiles, requiring high concentrations of inorganic salts, mostly sodium chloride, to grow and survive. They inhabit hypersaline environments, the distribution and abundance of which dur ing geological eras are attested by the vast amounts of evaporite rocks present in the Earth crust and by their role in the generation of petroleum deposits. The corditions of high osmolarity and ionic strength that are concomitant with concentrated salt solutions challenge the stability of lipid bilayers and the structure of proteins forcing halophilic microbes to develop specialized molecules and physiological me;;hanisms to cope with this environmental stress. Even so, halophilism is a widespread trait in the microbial world. All the major groups of eucaryotic microbes, two groups of archaeobacteria and most phylogenetic branches of eubacteria have halophilic representatives. Therefore, the study of halophilic microorganisms is indeed a highly heterogeneous and extense topic. Research was carried out at laboratory scale and in full-scale plants and modelling was employed in both phases to provide a mathematical description for salt inhibition on nitrification and to facilitate the comparison. The result has led to an improved understanding of the effect of salinity on nitrification. The results can be used to improve the sustainability of the exisisting wastewater treatment plants operated under salt stress. |
