newly commissioned naval officer's guide: The Noncommissioned Officer and Petty Officer Department of Defense, National Defense University Press, 2020-02-10 The Noncommissioned Officer and Petty Officer BACKBONE of the Armed Forces. Introduction The Backbone of the Armed Forces To be a member of the United States Armed Forces--to wear the uniform of the Nation and the stripes, chevrons, or anchors of the military Services--is to continue a legacy of service, honor, and patriotism that transcends generations. Answering the call to serve is to join the long line of selfless patriots who make up the Profession of Arms. This profession does not belong solely to the United States. It stretches across borders and time to encompass a culture of service, expertise, and, in most cases, patriotism. Today, the Nation's young men and women voluntarily take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and fall into formation with other proud and determined individuals who have answered the call to defend freedom. This splendid legacy, forged in crisis and enriched during times of peace, is deeply rooted in a time-tested warrior ethos. It is inspired by the notion of contributing to something larger, deeper, and more profound than one's own self. newly commissioned naval officer's guide: Nelson's Navy Philip Haythornthwaite, 2012-04-20 Despite the many celebrated victories of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars, the role of the Royal Navy should never be overlooked. This book covers the huge variations in uniforms not just in the Navy but the Royal Marines and Infantry regiments which served alongside naval crews. It also looks at the organisation, training and recruitment of the force and corrects a number of misconceptions regarding impressment and training. |

newly commissioned naval officer's guide: Uriah Levy Ira Dye, 2006 Uriah Levy's naval career spanned the age of sail to the era of steam-driven ironclads. As one of the few Jewish Americans in the U.S. Navy, Levy was the target of prejudice and was court-martialed six times for his response to perceived insults, yet he was the only Jew who reached the rank of Flag Officer. As an advocate for the enlisted soldier, he fought for and succeeded in putting an end to flogging in the Navy. As perhaps the first American historic preservationist, he bought and restored Jefferson's beloved but failing Monticello and opened it for public tours. In further tribute to his idol, he commissioned the statue of Jefferson that stands in the U.S. Capitol rotunda today. Drawing on archival and printed sources, British and American naval records, local records of Levy's residences, the records of several Jewish congregations in the United States, and rarely used naval court martial records, Ira Dye has produced a modern biography of Levy in the context of his time, focusing on his contributions as a naval officer from the War of 1812 until the Civil War as well as the personal characteristics that drove him to make those contributions. Levy served in the Mediterranean during the early antebellum period when the United States was establishing a presence in that area, later commanded the Mediterranean Squadron during the turbulent years of European unrest in the 1850s, was on board the Argus during its fatal cruise in the War of 1812, and presided over one of the few documented charges of homosexual activity in the Old Navy. Rich with details of life in the sailing navy, the story of Uriah Levy is a significant contribution to antebellum naval history. |

newly commissioned naval officer's guide: One Mission Chris Fussell, Charles Goodyear, 2017-07-25 Leaders from every industry are facing unprecedented challenges in the 21st century to make their teams work more effectively without expiring under the pressure of performance. In One Mission, Chris Fussell, co-author of the bestselling Team of Teams, walks leaders through the steps of transitioning from traditional hierarchy to the world-famous Team of Teams model. Drawing on years of experience as a Navy SEAL, as General McChrystal's right-hand man in Iraq and as a partner in the McChrystal Group, Fussell unerringly leads readers through the steps of designing their own version of the Team of Teams model. The steps of transition include: - Achieving strategic alignment: every organization thinks it has sufficiently communicated its priorities down the chain of command, but rarely is this alignment sufficient. - Determining operating rhythm: annual or six-monthly town hall alignment gathers are no longer regular enough to communicate messages urgently and risk putting entire companies out of date. - Setting up communication and decision-making processes: not every person in an organization is qualified for the decision-making freedom ideal in a flexible team. Fussell shows how a hybrid structure can empower and inspire every person on the team while still restricting the decision-making process appropriately. - Shifting leadership behaviour: radical humility, beginning with the leader and continuing down the chain of command, is the key to a successful transition. Including examples of transition in companies ranging from Intuit to the U.S. Army to small businesses, One Mission is a practical handbook for anyone looking to evolve their workforce into a highly mobile and effective unit that can unlock the potential of the individual talents that make up their teams in a way many would have thought impossible. |

newly commissioned naval officer's guide: US Navy Battleships 1895–1908 Brian Lane Herder, 2020-09-17 The last predreadnought battleships of the US Navy were critical to the technological development of US battleships, and they were the first tool of international hard power wielded by the United States, a nation which would eventually become the world's dominant political and military power of the 20th century. These battleships were the stars of the 1907–09 Great White Fleet circumnavigation, in which the emerging power and reach of the US Navy was displayed around the world. They also took part in the bombardment and landings at Veracruz, some served as convoy escorts in World War I, and the last two were transferred to the Hellenic Navy and were sunk during World War II. This book examines the design, history, and technical qualities of the final six classes of US predreadnought battleships, all of which were involved in the circumnavigation of the Great White Fleet. These classes progressively closed the quality gap with European navies – the Connecticuts were the finest predreadnought battleships ever built – and this book also compares and contrasts US predreadnought battleships to their foreign contemporaries. Packed with illustrations and specially commissioned artwork, this is an essential guide to the development of US Navy Battleships at the turn of the twentieth century. |

newly commissioned naval officer's guide: Navy Staff Officer's Guide Dale C Rielage, 2022-11-15 Continuing the tradition of Naval Institute Blue and Gold series classics such as Command at Sea and the Watch Officer’s Guide, the Navy Staff Officer’s Guide will equip naval leaders for success in the challenging professional environment of a Navy staff. Navy staffs build and equip the Navy, plan its future, and guide its current operations. During a staff tour, a savvy Navy leader can have positive reach beyond the lifelines of a single command, with impact across the fleet and years into the future. Staff duty emphasizes a different set of tools from those typically employed in sea duty billets. It has its own formal and informal expectations and its own opportunities, challenges, and pitfalls. This guide provides and explains those tools — and marks the shoals that can wreck the unaware — enabling both new and seasoned staff officers to be prepared for the unique requirements of staff duty. Through extensive use of historical examples and “sea stories,” it introduces the reader to why staffs exist, how they impact the Navy, and how they can offer both professional development and meaningful accomplishment. Recognizing that Navy staffs vary in their purposes and organization, The Navy Staff Officer’s Guide synthesizes those differences into meaningful guidance for all staff officers, civilians, and Sailors, whether assigned to a destroyer squadron staff operating from a DDG or to the OPNAV staff in the Pentagon. Effective coordination, clear communication, and an understanding of the commander and their mission are central to staff success and are clearly articulated. In twenty-three chapters covering the many aspects of Navy staff work—including “The Staff Command Triad,” “Communicating as a Staff Officer,” “Civilian Personnel,” “Fleet Commands and the Maritime Operations Centers,” and “TYCOMs and SYSCOMs”—Captain Rielage has “covered the waterfront” (in Sailor-speak) with this comprehensive and readable guide. Staffs may not win the fight, but good staff work creates the conditions for victory before the first shot is fired. This guide is the key to ensuring the success of Navy staffs and all those who serve them. |
