nasb literal word: Young's Literal Translation of the Bible Young, Robert, 2014-06-14 Young’s Literal Translation of the Bible is, as the name implies, a strictly literal translation of the Hebrew and Greek texts (from the Textus Receptus and Majority Text). Compiled by Robert Young in 1862, he went on to produce a revised version in 1887 based on the Westcott-Hort text which had been completed in 1885. Young died on October 14, 1888, and the publisher released a New Revised Edition in 1898. Young used the present tense in many places where other translations used the past tense- particularly in narratives. The Preface to the Second Edition states: “If a translation gives a present tense when the original gives a past, or a past when it has a present; a perfect for a future, or a future for a perfect; an a for a the, or a the for an a; an imperative for a subjunctive, or a subjunctive for an imperative; a verb for a noun, or a noun for a verb, it is clear that verbal inspiration is as much overlooked as if it had no existence. THE WORD OF GOD IS MADE VOID BY THE TRADITIONS OF MEN. [Emphasis in original.]” For example, the YLT version of Genesis begins as follows: 1. In the beginning of God’s preparing the heavens and the earth--- 2. The earth hath existed waste and void, and darkness on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God fluttering on the face of the waters, 3. And God saith, ‘Let light be;’ and light is. 4. And God seeth the light that it is good, and God seperateth between the light and the darkness, 5. And God alled to the light ‘Day,’ and to the darkness He hath called ‘Night;’ and there is an evening, and there is a morning---day one. Young's Literal Translation in the 1898 Edition also consistently renders the Hebrew Tetragrammaton (the four Hebrew letters usually transliterated YHWH or JHVH that form a biblical proper name of God) throughout the Old Covenant/Testament as Jehovah, instead of the traditional practice of LORD in small capitals, which was used in editions prior to 1898. Young's usage of English present tense rather than past tense has been supported by scholars ranging from the medieval Jewish rabbi Rashi (who advised, If you are going to interpret [this passage] in its plain sense, interpret it thus: At the beginning of the creation of heaven and earth, when the earth was (or the earth being) unformed and void . . . God said, ‘Let there be light.’) to Richard Elliott Friedman in his translation of the Five Books in The Bible with Sources Revealed (2002). There is a linked Table of Contents for each book and chapter.

nasb literal word: Differences Between Bible Versions: Third Edition Gary F. Zeolla, 2012-04-18 This book answers such questions as: Why do Bible versions differ? Why does the same verse read differently in different versions? Why do some versions contain words, phrases, and even entire verses that other versions omit? Which Bible versions are most reliable? This book contains extensive discussions on why the author believes either a literal or a formal equivalence (word-for-word) translation principle is the best method to use for translating the Bible. These principles of translating are contrasted with the dynamic equivalence (phrase for phrase) and paraphrase methods seen in many modern Bible versions. This book includes detailed discussions on why the author believes the Majority Text is the most accurate of the three Greek texts used in Bible translation. This book also contains an extended section critiquing the claims of KJV-onlyists. In addressing these various issues, Differences Between Bible Versions compares forty different versions of the Bible.

nasb literal word: Audio Study In The Book Of Hebrews. Irving Risch, Pat Christenson, 2016-03-05 This is an Audio Study with Lessons from Pat Christenson who, in my opinion, is a gifted speaker/teacher. Pat has the ability to get your attention and then keep it. I have been fellowshipping with Pat for many years now and we have become very good friends. Pat is a good brother in the Lord and a very funny guy. I know you will enjoy listening to him. Back on August 4th, 2013 Pat started a study in The Book of Hebrews, and this ebook contains 25 lessons with almost 20 hours of audio. This was an ongoing study until February 28th, 2016. The Book of Hebrews is an amazing book filled with so many lessons for Christians of our day, even though this book was written so many years ago. This book is set up with Links to all the lessons in MP3 format with the complete Outline to each lesson, plus extra notes on the book of Hebrews. You should be able to listen to these audio lessons on most devices but you will need the Internet because these are links and you can use a browser or audio player to listen to them. I was going to embed the audios but found that almost 20 hours of audio would have made this ebook so large that that it would have been impossible to download because there is over a gigabyte of audio linked to this ebook. You will find the Links embedded in the notes so that you can listen to the lesson as you look through the notes. My hope is that you get a rich blessing as you go through this study. I know I did. When you get done with this study you should have a good understanding of the Book of Hebrews.
nasb literal word: How Greek Philosophy Corrupted the Christian Concept of God Richard R. Hopkins, 2023-02-14 This insightful book brings profound new insights to the Trinitarian doctrines of “orthodox” Christianity. With clear and precise documentation, the book shows how these doctrines migrated into early Christianity from Greek philosophy. The various aspects of Trinitarian belief are isolated, linked to their Greek sources, and carefully analyzed to show they differ radically from biblical teaching. The Writings of early Church Fathers, portrayed in their historical context, show that during the second century, theological concepts taught in Platonism were adopted as Christianity struggled to end Roman persecution. Emperor Marcus Aurelius, a famous Stoic philosopher, was putting Christians to death because their belief did not conform to the Hellenized religion of the day. The book shows that the early church fathers sought to save their people’s lives by redefining the Christian God in Greek terms. Their efforts brought metaphysics to Christianity and ushered in concepts like the Trinity. After presenting the historical setting in which these philosophical errors were embraced as Christian doctrine, the book compares orthodox Christian theology today, called “classical theism,” to biblical teachings. The book identifies how Greek philosophy has influenced major attributes of God taught in classical theism. The book constitutes a major challenge to those who accept the tenants of classical theism but do not know the many aspects of their doctrine that are based on Greek philosophy.

nasb literal word: Translating the Bible Literally Michael T. Schmid, 2016-05-31 Differences in translation between so-called literal Bible versions make it quite appropriate to re-evaluate what is meant by the label literal. What do different literal Bible translations have in common? How do they differ? How do we account for possible different concepts of literalness? How is the concept of literalness applied to the making of a Bible translation? To answer these questions, the author compares three literal Bible translations: the King James Version, the New American Standard Bible and the English Standard Version. For each of these versions, the historical background and the writings of the translators themselves are analysed. The book concludes with a comparison of the three translations in their renderings of selected examples from the Gospel of John.
nasb literal word: Famine for the Word of God Lamar Mauldin, 2020-04-12 As Lamar Mauldin studied the phenomenon of modern Bible versions, it became apparent that a conspiracy of sorts was behind them. Not that all the translators were necessarily evil, but the overall desire of some to undermine the King James Version is of itself diabolical. This book has been written to alert the Christian world to this conspiracy. Quoting from several sources regarding the integrity of some of the translators from bygone years, the author attempts to show that they, although likely sincere, were less than accurate in their translation of the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts into English. Use of extensive passages from the writings of Ellen G. White further shows the validity of the King James Version of the Bible. The grand language of the King James Version has stood the test of time, and it finds no equal in the modern translations. Because the Bible is the means through which God has chosen to communicate with fallen humanity, the way in which we read and understand it is vital.

nasb literal word: HCSB - Bible Translation E. Ray Clendenen, David K. Stabnow, 2013-03-01 In Genesis 3:1 the serpent asked the woman, Did God really say, 'You can't eat from any tree in the garden'? What has God really said? Before we can obey Him, we must know what He has said. The Psalmist prayed twice in his affliction, Give me life through Your word (Ps 119:25, 107). When Jesus was afflicted by the Devil in the wilderness (Mt 4:1-11), He defended Himself with the sword of the Spirit (Eph 6:17) - God's Word. But Christians must know what God has said if we are to find strength and healing from affliction and defense against the Devil. Bible translation is not a casual enterprise because it involves bringing the life-saving Word of God to people in their own language. And selecting a Bible translation is not on the order of picking out a sweater. It's more like picking a doctor - someone you can trust. This book is about how Bible translation is done. And it commends a particular translation - the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) - as a trustworthy guide to what God has really said.
