nahko and medicine for the people songs: The Path of Least Resistance Jesselynn Desmond, 2021-04-06 You can't always get what you want—but you can. Much of what we hear about ourselves and the world...No pain, no gain; It's a dog-eat-dog world; Either you got it or you don't—isn't true when we understand our nature and how to operate to reach our maximum potential. But how many of us understand our own design specs? Refrigerators come with instruction manuals—why not people? Here at last is the manual that should have come with you at birth. And it turns out that life is a lot easier than we've been taught. Living in alignment with your true nature—the path of least resistance—brings you all the joy, abundance and health your Manufacturer intended you to have! When a golfer has trouble with a swing, it's not because she doesn't deserve to play golf, or golf hates her, or she'll never be any good at golf, or anything like that. It's simply that her swing (behavior) is not yet in alignment with her biodynamics for that swing. With a little coaching, she can align with her body's nature and the stroke becomes easy, even effortless. The same alignment to effortlessness can happen in every area of your life! Use the tools and techniques in this book to help you align with natural, physical, and spiritual laws for joy, purpose, and vitality while living your dreams. |

nahko and medicine for the people songs: Indigenous Religion(s) Siv Ellen Kraft, Bjørn Ola Tafjord, Arkotong Longkumer, Gregory D. Alles, Greg Johnson, 2020-06-24 What counts as 'indigenous religion' in today ́s world? Who claims this category? What are the processes through which local entities become recognisable as 'religious' and 'indigenous'? How is all of this connected to struggles for power, rights and sovereignty? This book sheds light on the contemporary lives of indigenous religion(s), through case studies from Sápmi, Nagaland, Talamanca, Hawai`i, and Gujarat, and through a shared focus on translations, performances, mediation and sovereignty. It builds on long term case-studies and on the collaborative comparison of a long-term project, including shared fieldwork. At the center of its concerns are translations between a globalising discourse (indigenous religion in the singular) and distinct local traditions (indigenous religions in the plural). With contributions from leading scholars in the field, this book is a must read for students and researchers in indigenous religions, including those in related fields such as religious studies and social anthropology. |
nahko and medicine for the people songs: Ojibwa Warrior Dennis Banks, 2011-11-28 Dennis Banks, an American Indian of the Ojibwa Tribe and a founder of the American Indian Movement, is one of the most influential Indian leaders of our time. In Ojibwa Warrior, written with acclaimed writer and photographer Richard Erdoes, Banks tells his own story for the first time and also traces the rise of the American Indian Movement (AIM). The authors present an insider’s understanding of AIM protest events—the Trail of Broken Treaties march to Washington, D.C.; the resulting takeover of the BIA building; the riot at Custer, South Dakota; and the 1973 standoff at Wounded Knee. Enhancing the narrative are dramatic photographs, most taken by Richard Erdoes, depicting key people and events. |

nahko and medicine for the people songs: Shadows in the Sun Wade Davis, 2010-10-12 Wade Davis has been called a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet and passionate defender of all of life's diversity. In Shadows in the Sun, he brings all of those gifts to bear on a fascinating examination of indigenous cultures and the interactions between human societies and the natural world. Ranging from the British Columbian wilderness to the jungles of the Amazon and the polar ice of the Arctic Circle, Shadows in the Sun is a testament to a world where spirits still stalk the land and seize the human heart. Its essays and stories, though distilled from travels in widely separated parts of the world, are fundamentally about landscape and character, the wisdom of lives drawn directly from the land, the hunger of those who seek to rediscover such understanding, and the consequences of failure. As Davis explains, To know that other, vastly different cultures exist is to remember that our world does not exist in some absolute sense but rather is just one model of reality. The Penan in the forests of Borneo, the Vodoun acolytes in Haiti, the jaguar Shaman of Venezuela, teach us that there are other options, other possibilities, other ways of thinking and interacting with the earth. Shadows in the Sun considers those possibilities, and explores their implications for our world. |

nahko and medicine for the people songs: Spirit Run Noé Álvarez, 2021-03-02 In this New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, the son of working-class Mexican immigrants flees a life of labor in fruit-packing plants to run in a Native American marathon from Canada to Guatemala in this stunning memoir that moves to the rhythm of feet, labor, and the many landscapes of the Americas (Catriona Menzies-Pike, author of The Long Run). Growing up in Yakima, Washington, Noé Álvarez worked at an apple–packing plant alongside his mother, who “slouched over a conveyor belt of fruit, shoulder to shoulder with mothers conditioned to believe this was all they could do with their lives.” A university scholarship offered escape, but as a first–generation Latino college–goer, Álvarez struggled to fit in. At nineteen, he learned about a Native American/First Nations movement called the Peace and Dignity Journeys, epic marathons meant to renew cultural connections across North America. He dropped out of school and joined a group of Dené, Secwépemc, Gitxsan, Dakelh, Apache, Tohono O’odham, Seri, Purépecha, and Maya runners, all fleeing difficult beginnings. Telling their stories alongside his own, Álvarez writes about a four–month–long journey from Canada to Guatemala that pushed him to his limits. He writes not only of overcoming hunger, thirst, and fear—dangers included stone–throwing motorists and a mountain lion—but also of asserting Indigenous and working–class humanity in a capitalist society where oil extraction, deforestation, and substance abuse wreck communities. Running through mountains, deserts, and cities, and through the Mexican territory his parents left behind, Álvarez forges a new relationship with the land, and with the act of running, carrying with him the knowledge of his parents’ migration, and—against all odds in a society that exploits his body and rejects his spirit—the dream of a liberated future. This book is not like any other out there. You will see this country in a fresh way, and you might see aspects of your own soul. A beautiful run. —Luís Alberto Urrea, author of The House of Broken Angels When the son of two Mexican immigrants hears about the Peace and Dignity Journeys—'epic marathons meant to renew cultural connections across North America'—he’s compelled enough to drop out of college and sign up for one. Spirit Run is Noé Álvarez’s account of the four months he spends trekking from Canada to Guatemala alongside Native Americans representing nine tribes, all of whom are seeking brighter futures through running, self–exploration, and renewed relationships with the land they’ve traversed. —Runner's World, Best New Running Books of 2020 An anthem to the landscape that holds our identities and traumas, and its profound power to heal them. —Francisco Cantú, author of The Line Becomes a River |
nahko and medicine for the people songs: Rage To Survive Etta James, David Ritz, 1998-03-21 Perhaps the finest soul singer of the rock era-but equally at home singing blues and jazz—Etta James is one of the great women of American music. In Rage to Survive she tells her mesmerizing tale in her uniquely big, bold, and unrepentant voice. Without a trace of self-pity she describes her chaotic world of early R&B, depicts legends like Sam Cooke and Little Richard, details her dependency on drugs and bad men, and unsparingly recounts the golden age of soul, when her “Tell Mama” topped the charts. Rage to Survive is a funky, ribald tale told with unparalleled sass. |

nahko and medicine for the people songs: The Globalization of Addiction Bruce K. Alexander, 2008-07-03 'The Globalization of Addiction' presents a radical rethink about the nature of addiction. Scientific medicine has failed when it comes to addiction. There are no reliable methods to cure it, prevent it, or take the pain out of it. There is no durable consensus on what addiction is, what causes it, or what should be done about it. Meanwhile, it continues to increase around the world. This book argues that the cause of this failure to control addiction is that the conventional wisdom of the 19th and 20th centuries focused too single-mindedly on the afflicted individual addict. Although addiction obviously manifests itself in individual cases, its prevalence differs dramatically between societies. For example, it can be quite rare in a society for centuries, and then become common when a tribal culture is destroyed or a highly developed civilization collapses. When addiction becomes commonplace in a society, people become addicted not only to alcohol and drugs, but to a thousand other destructive pursuits: money, power, dysfunctional relationships, or video games. A social perspective on addiction does not deny individual differences in vulnerability to addiction, but it removes them from the foreground of attention, because social determinants are more powerful. This book shows that the social circumstances that spread addiction in a conquered tribe or a falling civilisation are also built into today's globalizing free-market society. A free-market society is magnificently productive, but it subjects people to irresistible pressures towards individualism and competition, tearing rich and poor alike from the close social and spiritual ties that normally constitute human life. People adapt to their dislocation by finding the best substitutes for a sustaining social and spiritual life that they can, and addiction serves this function all too well. The book argues that the most effective response to a growing addiction problem is a social and political one, rather than an individual one. Such a solution would not put the doctors, psychologists, social workers, policemen, and priests out of work, but it would incorporate their practices in a larger social project. The project is to reshape society with enough force and imagination to enable people to find social integration and meaning in everyday life. Then great numbers of them would not need to fill their inner void with addictions. |

nahko and medicine for the people songs: Lessons from the Road Todd Pasternack, 2017 Todd Pasternack spent 10 years as a full-time touring musician. He spent endless days riding in vans, playing one-night stands, and dealing with many creative and logistical problems that he had to handle on the spot. From these experiences, he learned to trust his judgment, to recognize and go with the flow, and, quite usefully, to code. He has since built a thriving business in digital marketing and advertising. In folksy, conversational prose, Pasternack shares how bands and businesses - especially start-ups - face parallel or comparable circumstances. He offers lessons he learned in the world of music to help business leaders become more flexible, cooperative and creative. Pasternack interviews 10 former professional musicians who have all become successful businesspeople - most famous among them, Jimmy Chamberlain of the multiplatinum group Smashing Pumpkins - and adds their hard-earned wisdom and helpful tips to his own. Though you might find too many tidbits of Pasternack's advice in other business books, his musician's perspective is fresh and illuminating. getAbstract recommends his guidance to entrepreneurs, managers and anyone looking for a fresh take on day-to-day solutions. |

Just in time for the 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock festival, this definitive volume tells you everything you need to know about the most famous three days in music history. |

nahko and medicine for the people songs: The Missing Element Debra Silverman, 2016-03-15 Everyone longs to be understood in their essence. In The Missing Element, author Debra Silverman describes human nature in a compassionate and succinct way, and offers ways for us to get to know ourselves in depth with the wisdom of archetypes. The information in this book stands on the shoulders of our elders, who understood the four directions, the four elements, the four noble truths. Whatever pain you experience is specific to your personality type, based on the four elements. The 'missing element' is twofold: it refers to the Observer inside you--the part of you that can stand outside of judgment and see yourself with a more wise and compassionate approach--much like our elders did. And it also refers to the elements that make up your personality and more specifically, to the element which is your weakest. Your issues will repeat themselves again and again until you can see yourself and others from the compassionate vantage point that unites all of us. You will understand that your life and all its stories were designed by your soul to get your attention right now. It is inviting you to seek the wisdom of the ages to help you grow... that’s why you found this book at this moment in time! |

An old building sits close to the tracks near the crossroads. Over the years it has been many things - a store, a post office, and even a recording studio. But somewhere along the way, one part of its history was lost. Until now.Years ago, the people of Bon Aqua loved this building because of its little stage. Back then, the legendary performer Johnny Cash was one in a long series of owners, and along with his family and close friends he put on shows here. These were concerts everyone could attend for free and where everyone could be free. Today, the Little Stage at the Storytellers Museum is coming back to life. Songs are being sung again, and stories are being told. Our hope is that you may find this collection of stories from the Storytellers Museum to be a source of life-giving inspiration. |
