monsignor jim vlaun biography: Light on the Dark Passages of Scripture Mark Giszczak, 2015-12-07 Does God kill people? Why do the innocent suffer? Is Hell a just punishment? Why would God allow Jesus to be crucified? The Old Testament God vs. New Testament God - are they the same person? If you've read the Bible, you may have had these questions cross your mind. Or, you've heard your non-believing friends ask these questions to justify their disbelief. How do we reconcile these questions with our Faith in a loving, just God? The good news is that we CAN work through these difficult passages and arrive at a deeper knowledge of who God really is, leading to a closer relationship with him. Light on the Dark Passages of Scripture guides you through God's revelation, interpreting challenging texts, providing reasonable answers to nagging questions, and showing the mercies of a loving God. The best book I know that explains - and doesn't explain away - the truly difficult texts of scripture. I can't recommend this book enough! - Ralph Martin, S.T.D. Guides us through the museum of 'dark passages' and eventually leads us to the display of God's love in Christ as the answer to the human messiness of redemptive history. - Taylor Marshall, PhD

monsignor jim vlaun biography: Chinese New Migrants in Suriname Paul B. Tjon Sie Fat, 2009 This book covers various aspects of New Chinese Migration in Suriname in the 1990s and early 2000s. It is an ethnography of New Chinese Migrants in the context of South- South migration, but also a first ethnography of Chinese in Suriname, as well as an analysis of Surinamese ethnic discourse and ethnopolitics. Starting in the 1990s, renewed immigration from China changed the dynamics of the Surinamese Chinese community, which developed from a Hakka enclave to a culturally and linguistically diverse, modern Chinese migrant group. Local positioning strategies of Chinese had always depended on ethnic entrepreneurship and political participation, but were now complicated by anti-immigrant sentiments.

monsignor jim vlaun biography: Perennial Vegetables Eric Toensmeier, 2007-05-16 ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award: Home & Garden American Horticultural Society Book Award In Perennial Vegetables the adventurous gardener will find information, tips, and sound advice on less common edibles that will make any garden a perpetual, low-maintenance source of food. Imagine growing vegetables that require just about the same amount of care as the flowers in your perennial beds and borders—no annual tilling and potting and planting. They thrive and produce abundant and nutritious crops throughout the season. It sounds too good to be true, but in Perennial Vegetables author and plant specialist Eric Toensmeier (Edible Forest Gardens) introduces gardeners to a world of little-known and wholly underappreciated plants. Ranging beyond the usual suspects (asparagus, rhubarb, and artichoke) to include such “minor” crops as ground cherry and ramps (both of which have found their way onto exclusive restaurant menus) and the much sought after, anti-oxidant-rich wolfberry (also known as goji berries), Toensmeier explains how to raise, tend, harvest, and cook with plants that yield great crops and satisfaction. Perennial vegetables are perfect as part of an edible landscape plan or permaculture garden. Profiling more than 100 species, illustrated with dozens of color photographs and illustrations, and filled with valuable growing tips, recipes, and resources, Perennial Vegetables is a groundbreaking and ground-healing book that will open the eyes of gardeners everywhere to the exciting world of edible perennials.

monsignor jim vlaun biography: With God in Russia Walter J. Ciszek, Daniel L. Flaherty, 2017-06-13 A Polish-American priest spends twenty-three years in Soviet prisons and labor camps during the Cold War in this classic memoir of faith and survival. After ministering in Eastern Europe during World War II, Walter Ciszek, S.J., was arrested by the Russian secret police. Accused of spying, and charged with “agitation with intent to subvert,” he was held in Moscow’s notorious Lubyanka prison for five years. The Catholic priest was then sentenced without trial to ten more years in Siberia’s notorious forced labor camp system made famous in Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago. In With God in Russia, Ciszek reflects on his daily life as a prisoner, his unwavering faith in God, and his firm devotion to his vows and vocation. Enduring brutal conditions, Ciszek risked his life to offer spiritual guidance to fellow prisoners who could easily have exposed him for their own gains. Ciszek chronicles these experiences with grace, humility, and candor, from his secret work leading mass and hearing confessions within the prison grounds, to his participation in a major gulag uprising, to his eventual release in a 1963 prisoner exchange which astonished all who had feared he was dead.

monsignor jim vlaun biography: Queering Religion, Religious Queers Yvette Taylor, Ria Snowdon, 2014-02-18 This collection considers how religious identity interplays with other forms and contexts of identity, specifically those related to sexual identity. It asks how these intersections are formed, negotiated and resisted across time and places, including the UK, Europe, North America, Australia, and the Global South. Questions around ‘queer’ engagements in same-sex marriages, civil partnerships and other practices (e.g. adoption) have created a number of provoking stances and policy provisions – but what remains unanswered is how people experience and situate themselves within sometimes competing, or ‘contradictory’, moments as ‘religious queers’ who may be tasked with ‘queering religion’. Additionally, the presumed paradoxes of ‘marriage’, queer sexuality, religion and youth combine to generate a noteworthy generational absence. This leads to questions about where ‘religious queers’ reside, resist and relate experiences of intersecting religious and sexual lives. In looking at interconnectedness, this collection offers international contributions which bridge the ‘contradictions’ in queering religion and in making visible ‘religious queers.’ It provides insight into older and younger people’s understandings of religiosity, queer cultures, and religious groups. A small but active religious minority in the US has received much attention for its anti-gay political activity; much less attention has been paid to the more positive, supportive role that religious-based groups play in e.g. providing housing, education and political advocacy for queer youth. Queer methodologies and intersectional approaches offer a lens both theoretically and methodologically to uncover the salience of related social divisions and identities. This collection is both innovative and sensitive to ‘blended’ identities and their various enactments.

monsignor jim vlaun biography: How They Love Mary Fr Edward Looney, 2022-04-26 Could your love and reverence for the Mother of God use a boost? Here's a powerful 30-day devotional to help you invigorate your love for Our Lady by exploring the many ways in which holy men and women have venerated Mary throughout time. From St. Damian of Molokai to Padre Pio, from St. Francis of Assisi to St. Thomas Aquinas, you'll learn new ways of honoring Mary that you hadn't considered previously, and you'll be heartened toward a holiness and love of God that only these illustrious spiritual teachers can inspire. Here's a book that will be of particular value to those who are either beginning their devotion to Our Lady or whose devotion has become stagnant over time. You'll learn how St. Kateri Tekakwitha imitated Mary's life as a consecrated virgin and offered Marian prayers that bore fruit. You'll explore St. Faustina's mystical experiences of Mary and how St. Francis de Sales's depression was healed through Our Lady's intercession. You'll also learn how Bishop Fulton Sheen relied on Mary to remain celibate, how St. Thérèse of Lisieux was healed by her smile, and how Mother Angelica would pray the Rosary. Author Fr. Looney also includes excerpts from the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as a host of exquisite prayers and litanies to Our Lady. Here's the single book you need in this life to periodically strengthen your devotion to Our Lady by following the examples of the holy men and women who came before us and on whose shoulders we stand.

monsignor jim vlaun biography: Song of Songs J. Cheryl Exum, 2005-01-01 This original commentary foregrounds at every turn the poetic genius of the Song of Songs, one of the most elusive texts of the Hebrew Bible. J. Cheryl Exum locates that genius in the way the Song not only tells but shows its readers that love is strong as death, thereby immortalizing love, as well as in the way the poet explores the nature of love by a mature sensitivity to how being in love is different for the woman and the man. Many long-standing conundrums in the interpretation of the book are offered persuasive solutions in Exum's verse by verse exegesis. The Old Testament Library provides fresh and authoritative treatments of important aspects of Old Testament study through commentaries and general surveys. The contributors are scholars of international standing.
