merlin van lawick mother: The Uncommon Child Michael Lewis, Leonard A. Rosenblum, 2013-03-09 How are we to understand the complex forces that shape human behavior? A variety of diverse perspectives, drawing upon studies of human behavioral ontogeny, as well as humanity's evolutionary heri tage, seem to provide the best likelihood of success. It is in the attempt to synthesize such potentially disparate approaches to human devel opment into an integrated whole that we undertake this series on the Genesis of Behavior. In many respects, the incredible burgeoning of research in child development over the last decade or two seems like a thousand lines of inquiry spreading outward in an incoherent starburst of effort. The need exists to provide, on an ongoing basis, an arena of discourse within which the threads of continuity between those diverse lines of research on human development can be woven into a fabric of meaning and understanding. Scientists, scholars, and those who attempt to translate their efforts into the practical realities of the care and guidance of infants and children are the audience that we seek to reach. Each requires the opportunity to see-to the degree that our knowledge in given areas permits-various aspects of development in a coherent, integrated fashion. It is hoped that this series, which will bring together research on infant biology, developing infant capacities, animal models, the impact of social, cultural, and familial forces on development, and the distorted products of such forces under certain circumstances, will serve these important social and scientific needs. |
merlin van lawick mother: Coping with the Final Tragedy David R. Counts, Dorothy Ayers Counts, 1991 This book as a whole emphasizes common concerns shared by all humanity while the volume chapters emphasize various cultural diversities, and the remarkable varieties in the ways that people understood and experience death and grief. The articles in this new text demonstrate these differences and provide insight into human resourcefulness and ingenuity as people cope with death, the final tragedy. |

merlin van lawick mother: Clinical Psychology C. Eugene Walker, 2013-11-21 The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a survey of some of the major areas of clinical psychology. No attempt has been made to include every area relevant to clinical psychology; the choices are selective but represent the wide range of areas touched by clinical psychologists. For some years I have felt the need for a book that provides students with more of a historical introduction and context from which to view current clinical psychology than is included in most textbooks. The issues and problems of clinical psychology have been with us since the beginning of time; however, most psychological literature is written with the bias that anything older than five or ten years is not relevant. Those who attempt to take a long-range view of clinical psychology are sometimes able to recall the early development of the field in the 1930s and 1940s. In this text, I asked the authors to begin with a brief survey of ancient and medieval history to set the stage for a discussion of current research and developments in the field. I hope that a presentation of this sort will provide the reader-whether advanced undergraduate, graduate, or professional-with a sense of perspective and context from which to view and understand clinical psychology. |

merlin van lawick mother: Child Nurturance Hiram E. Fitzgerald, John A. Mullins, Patricia Gage, 2012-12-06 The underlying theme uniting the papers of this volume is the quest for a further understanding of human behavior. The similarities between the behaviors of other primates and humans have captivated us even before a science arose. But what is the justification for making such comparisons? Comparisons, like classifications, can be made on any basis whatever. The aim in making any scientific comparison is the same as doing a classification. That is, one attempts to make the comparison on a natural basis. Natural, in this case, means that the comparison reflects processes that occur in nature. The fundamental paradigm for making natural comparisons in biology is based on evolutionary theory. The evolutionary paradigm is inherently one of comparisons between and within species. Conversely, it is impossible to begin to make cross species comparisons without making, implicitly at least, evolutionary arguments. But evolution is a complex construct of theories (Lewis, 1980), and comparisons can be made out of different theoretical bases. F or the sake of this discussion we can combine varieties of sub-theories into two categories: those having to do with descent with modification, and those concerned with the mechanics of evolutionary change--notably natural selection. |

merlin van lawick mother: In Search of Pedagogy Volume I Jerome S. Bruner, 2006-09-27 Jerome Bruner is one of the best-known and most influential psychologists of the twentieth century. His theories about cognitive development dominate psychology around the world today, but it is in the field of education where his influence has been especially felt. In this two volume set, Bruner has selected and assembled his most important writings about education. Volume I spans the twenty years from 1957 to 1978 and Volume II covers 1979 to 2006. Volume I starts with a specially written introduction by Bruner, in which he gives an overview of the 1957-1978 years and contextualises his selection of papers. The articles and chapters then reveal the thinking, the concepts and the empirical research of that time that have made Bruner one of the most respected and cited educational authorities of our time. |

Keehn, 2018-02-19 Originally published in 1986, in this work Professor Keehn assesses the contributions of experimental psychology and ethology to psychiatric theory and practice at the time. He discusses the status of animals in psychopathology, and describes a number of animal clinical pictures, covering both abnormal movements and convulsions, and spontaneous behavioural disorders. He also includes animal models of such psychiatric illnesses as neurosis, psychosis, drug addiction and disorders of childhood, and examines the nature of mental illness and the status of psychiatric diagnosis. The book includes an evaluation of the ethics of experimental research with animals and a summary of humane experimental procedures. Animal Models for Psychiatry will be of special interest to psychiatrists, clinical and physiological psychologists, behavioural pharmacologists, and to veterinarians. |

There are readings to illustrate how parents frame, guide, and scaffold young children's development with special reference to the way children are inititiated into using language as a tool for learning. This cross-cultural dimension of early development is a particular focus of this volume, which concludes with readings on the costruction of personal identity, - from back cover. |
merlin van lawick mother: Animal Tool Behavior Robert W. Shumaker, Kristina R. Walkup, Benjamin B. Beck, 2024-12-10 This revised and updated edition of the landmark publication reveals the current state of knowledge regarding animal tool behavior. When originally published in 1980, Animal Tool Behavior was the first volume to catalog and analyze the complete literature on tool use and manufacture in non-human animals. Benjamin B. Beck showed how animals—from insects to primates—employed different types of tools to solve numerous problems. This work inspired and energized legions of researchers to study the use of tools by a wide variety of species. This new edition reveals the current state of knowledge regarding animal tool behavior, updated and revised with 300 additional references that have been published since the second edition. Through a comprehensive synthesis of studies produced through 2023, Robert W. Shumaker, Kristina R. Walkup, and Benjamin B. Beck define tool use, discuss the modes of tool use that have emerged in the scientific literature, examine all forms of tool manufacture, and address common myths about non-human tool use. Specific examples involving invertebrates, birds, fish, and mammals describe the differing levels of sophistication of tool use exhibited by animals. This volume provides a thorough framework for understanding animal tool use and manufacture. |

merlin van lawick mother: I Can, I Must, I Will Reginald Abraham Mengi, 2018-08-11 This is a powerful account of the story of Africa told through the life of one of its contemporary shapers, Reginald Abraham Mengi of Tanzania. I Can, I Must, I Will comes at a time when Africa is casting a new vision that is guided largely by the power of entrepreneurship. There could be no better guiding light for that vision than the spirit of courage, determination and dedication to self-improvement that is so vividly represented by the life and work recounted in this book. Like Africa itself, Dr. Mengi is a person of humble origins. But his character and personality were shaped by a family history that imbued in him a sense of self-confidence and commitment to setting goals and seeking to accomplish them. In addition to these personal values, the book also reveals a self-driven person with unflinching commitment to duty. Nothing seems to stand in the way of Dr. Mengi in his determination to reaffirm his self-worth through the pursuit of excellence. |
