mathematical location: Mathematical Location and Land Use Theory Professor Dr. Tönu Puu, 2013-03-09 In his student years the author of this book was fortunate to have Tord Palander, once the leading location theorist of his age, as teacher and later as his thesis adviser. Palander started his economics career in the 30es with taking interest in spatial economics, and ended up with monetary economics in the 50es. The author made the reverse route. So, in the intersection of our professional lives Palander and I both worked with monetary issues, and we never spoke of spatial economics in his remaining lifetime. Despite this the author assimilated Palander's basic philosophy which perspired already through his dissertation (Beitriige zur Standortstheorie ): Good science is there to be easily understood, the difficult and mysterious being under the con stant suspicion of being wrong. Also, it was when trying to organize Palander's scientific remains upon his death in 1972 that the author found two small papers by Martin Beckmann from the early 50es. These concise contributions, largely overlooked, which did cast the entire spatial trade equilibrium in terms of two partial differen tial equations became the focus of interest of the author for many years. It was, however, at first hard to get ahead with the Beckmann model, just because it was so general. It could subsume most of the models ever devel oped in spatial economics, but, due to this very generality, it was difficult to get out any particular information, except in terms of examples. |

But this was exactly how More saw God; God is invisible, immaterial, infinite, and transcendent, yet also omnipresent above, beyond, and within us. If God was somehow linked to space, he could be truly present while remaining immaterial, upholding the creator-creature distinction. He’d be near to us but would not be identical with us, just as space is distinct from the objects occupying it while remaining intimately close to those objects. What if space was, in some sense, divine? Odder still, Newton soon erected his new physics upon More’s idea. Indeed, there’s real evidence that the modern scientific world was unwittingly grounded upon this theistic metaphysic. Of course, modern physics shed these underpinnings in the nineteenth century, and was itself relativized by Einstein in the twentieth. Yet this book seeks to reappraise More’s odd idea. Is divine space theologically orthodox? Can it provide a new argument for the existence of God? And does it have any philosophical merit for us post-Einstein—a Space God for a Space Age? |

This book shows this to be a relatively recent understanding of motion and that prior to the scientific revolution motion was a broader and more mysterious category, applying to moral as well as physical movements. Simon Oliver presents fresh interpretations of key figures in the history of western thought including Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas and Newton, examining the thinkers’ handling of the concept of motion. Through close readings of seminal texts in ancient and medieval cosmology and early modern natural philosophy, the books moves from antique to modern times investigating how motion has been of great significance within theology, philosophy and science. Particularly important is the relation between motion and God, following Aristotle traditional doctrines of God have understood the divine as the ‘unmoved mover’ while post-Holocaust theologians have suggested that in order to be compassionate God must undergo the motion of suffering. PWC 2003 is the ?agship conference of the IFIP Working Group 6.8, Mobile and Wireless Communications, and is the premier international forum for discussions between researchers, practitioners, and students interested in the symbiosis of mobile computing and wireless networks. It is a great pleasure to present the PWC 2003 technical program. This year the conference received 115 submissions from 27 countries indicating that PWC is a reference conference for worldwide researchers from the wireless and mobile community. With so many papers to choose from, the Technical Program Committee’s job, to provide a conference program of the highest technical quality, was challenging and time consuming. From the 115 submissions, we ?nally selected 34 full papers and 15 short papers for presentation in the conference technical sessions. The conference technical program was split into three days, and included, in addition to the 49 refereed contributions, 4 invited papers from top-level researchers from the mobile and wireless community. To give researchers the opportunity to present ongoing work, and the novel ideas they are starting to explore, we included in the technical program two work-in-progress sessions and two novel-ideas sessions.
