In all of these disorders, a central component of the pathophysiology is insulin resistance, i.e., reduced responsiveness to insulin in tissues such as muscle, fat and liver. Insulin resistance is also closely linked to other common health problems, including obesity, polycystic ovarian disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. Caesar is the family name of Julius, who was presumably delivered by cutting open his mother's abdomen. This is how the term Caesarean came to be. Kaiser is the title of Wilhelm II, the German emperor. He was delivered vaginally. During delivery, his arm's nerve was injured, causing it to become partially paralyzed and atrophied. Julius Caesar's daughter, Julia, died while giving birth vaginally. Her child also died. Julia's deadly delivery was most likely due to having a small pelvis, which she may have inherited from her grandmother. SMARTER, HEALTHIER, AND HAPPIER BABIES: Vaginal delivery poses many risks, especially to the baby. And generally babies are more vulnerable to risks. In the USA, the neonatal mortality rate is thirty times higher than the maternal mortality rate. The quality of obstetric care and the method of delivery have a bearing on the physical and mental health and the physical appearance of the baby. With the highest life expectancy and the largest elderly population in the world, Japan has witnessed health inequality by region and social class becoming more prevalent since the 2000s. The first half of this volume describes in detail major NCDs, such as cancers, heart and kidney diseases, diabetes, stroke, and metabolic syndrome. The second half, on the other hand, explores various SDHs relating to healthy ageing. All chapters review and focus on SDHs, particularly health inequality associated with socio-economic status and social capital, which are widely addressed in the field of social epidemiology. The book makes the argument that “Health for All” advocated by the WHO should be implemented based on social justice and benefits for the greater society.
