  mdmp class: Training Requirements of Battle Staff NCOs in Digital Units Raymond J. Felton, 2003 The United States Army is transforming to a versatile force with the capabilities, particularly the digital technology, necessary to optimize the flow of information and enhance situational awareness. One vital enlisted position affected by the implementation of these digital technologies and equipment is assigned to Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officers. The Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer course trains Noncommissioned Officers to be integral members of battle staffs in analog units. The current institutional training does not include instruction on how to use digital technology to leverage performance in Tactical Operations Centers. To determine if the role of the Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer changed with the inception of digital technology, data were collected from 522Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officers. Findings, based on surveys, observations, and interviews, suggest the need to include digital training within the Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officers Course and the need for system integration training to support the change in the role of the Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer.

Wampler, 1998 Ths report documents the analysis, design, and development of the Military Decision-Making Process (MDMP): A Prototype Training Product. The MDMP product is a computer-based, stand alone training support package to assist individuals and staffs of light infantry brigades in learning to participate in the military decision-making process. The product consists of a compact disk that presents a self-paced course of instruction on now to conduct the MDMP. Doctrinal fundamentals based on FM 101-5 Staff Organization and Operations, serve as the basis. The course also contains numerous tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) that will assist staff officers in understanding and mastering their individual skills and their role in the collective process. This program, sponsored by ARI, was coordinated with the Joint Readiness Training Center leader's Training Program.--DTIC.

Ford, 1998 The U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI), in coordination with the Directorate of Training and Doctrine Development-Force XXI and Fort Knox, sponsored this research and development effort to design simulation based training for selected members of conventional mounted brigade staff. Initial analysis of performance requirements in existing documentation revealed that the performance specifications were not sufficiently detailed for brigade battle staffs. Therefore, a systematic performance analysis was conducted. Brigade staff actions were role played by military subject matter experts (SME). Performance requirements were analyzed for three missions (movement to contact, area defense, and deliberate attack). After each role play session, SMEs responded to questionnaires regarding their actions and were interviewed extensively by training analysts Once the information was gathered, it was refined into task statements. The outcome of this process is a list of tasks that identify both individual and interactive performance requirements. The Combined Arms Operations at Brigade Level, Realistically Achieved Through Simulation (COBRAS) Brigade Staff Tasks are intended to be used as coaching guides for training observers and as job aids for the training participants.--DTIC.

  mdmp class: Developing a Blended Learning Approach for Army Leader Planning Jennifer Sommers Tucker, 2010 The objective of this research project was to develop a blended learning module that facilitates the integration of component knowledge into higher order leader concepts and skills. As the Army is transitioning many of its institutional courses to a blended learning curriculum, the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) has called for ARI to demonstrate blended learning approaches in the development of course material. Thus, training content was identified within the Aviation Captains Career Course (AVC3) that would benefit from the use of blended learning techniques to further the acquisition of skills and knowledge. Specifically, the Tactical Decision Exercise (TDE)-Builder tool was developed to foster military planning skills with a particular focus on the topic of intelligence preparation of the battlefield (IPB). As there is limited time available in the course to ensure that the knowledge is acquired by all students, the tool provides students with the opportunity to practice conducting the IPB exercise at their own pace with the goal of reinforcing the knowledge and skills acquired during the course. The final tool and supporting documentation was transitioned to AVC3 instructors/trainers for use as a blended learning approach for the course. The software runs a stand-alone application that does not require administrative rights and does not require server or Internet access. This report documents the process that was used to develop the tool and provides an overview of how to employ the tool. The software is enclosed in this report and also can be obtained by contacting the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral & Social Sciences at the above address.--DTIC.

Her account begins with the U.S. Army’s four-month training program for cultural advisors, follows her deployment, much of it on missions to remote and volatile areas far from brigade headquarters, and concludes with her uneasy return home. She examines the everyday lives of Americans sent to conduct a war of counterinsurgency, including their sexual exploits on base, their superstitions, even the heroic accounts that military contractors recount in their personal stories of past wars, stories that are sometimes a little too good to be true. We live in a networked society: texts, sounds, ideas, people, consumerism, protest movements, politics, entertainment, academia, and other items circulate in and through networks that come together and break apart at various moments. In these interactions, data sets of all sorts are formed, or at the least, are latent. Such data affect what the humanities is or might be. While there exist networked spaces of interaction for digital humanities work, considering in more detail how networks affect traditional and future goals of humanistic inquiry is a timely pursuit.   mdmp class: The COBRAS Synthetic Theater of War Exercise Trial , 1999 This report details the design and development process for the Synthetic Theater of War (STOW) exercise produced in the COBRAS III project. The exercise was to serve as the vehicle for three primary research areas: training support package and resource requirements, technology and infrastructure requirements, and potential for training value. The multiechelon training audience of the Brigade Combat Team included the brigade commander and staff, the commander and staff of one battalion task force (TF), and the line company commanders, first sergeants, fire support team leaders, and scout platoon of that TF. The STOW environment linked constructive simulation (the Brigade/Battalion Battle Simulation BBS and Modular Semi-Automated Forces ModSAF) and virtual simulation (Simulation Networking SIMNET) and reconfigurable simulators). The trial implementation in February - March 1998 involved members of TF 1-101, 3rd Brigade, and 42nd Infantry Division of the New York National Guard, along with supporting participants from the Force XXI Training Program, contracted logistics support (CLS) staffs, and the COBRAS Team. Training support was found to be manageable but resource-intensive. Technology and infrastructure findings were mixed: the systems promise exciting training opportunities, but there were many suggestions for improvement from participants. From the unit members' point of view, the exercise provided valuable training, and there was strong support for continued STOW and reconfigurable simulator development and use.--Stinet.

  mdmp class: Assessing Battle Command Information Requirements and the Military Decision Making Process in a Concept Experimentation Program , 1998 This report describes a concept experimentation assessment of battle command information requirements and military decision making in the 2010-2015 timeframe. This research was the first in a series of concept experimentation programs (CEPs) planned by the Mounted Battlespace Battle Lab (MBBL) at Fort Knox, KY, to re-engineer command and staff operations. This report focuses on research methods, exploratory results, and recommendations on method improvements for assessing battle command information requirements and the military decision making process (MDMP). The exploratory results provide a benchmark for future efforts and suggestions for improving information systems and future evaluations. Limitations and lessons learned on research methods are considered. Method recommendations address measurement approach issues, such as mission, enemy, terrain, troops, and time (METT-T) structure for determining information requirements, and the applicability of the MDMP in a real-time information environment. Recommendations on manual measures address the timing and scope of assessment and respondent workload. Finally, recommendations on instrumented measures stress reducing respondent workload and increasing measurement scope and precision.--Stinet.
