mechanical vector example: Biology of Blood-Sucking Insects Mike Lehane, 2012-12-06 Blood-sucking insects are the vectors of many of the most debilitating parasites of man and his domesticated animals. In addition they are of considerable direct cost to the agricultural industry through losses in milk and meat yields, and through damage to hides and wool, etc. So, not surprisingly, many books of medical and veterinary entomology have been written. Most of these texts are organized taxonomically giving the details of the life-cycles, bionomics, relationship to disease and economic importance of each of the insect groups in turn. I have taken a different approach. This book is topic led and aims to discuss the biological themes which are common in the lives of blood-sucking insects. To do this I have concentrated on those aspects of the biology of these fascinating insects which have been clearly modified in some way to suit the blood-sucking habit. For example, I have discussed feeding and digestion in some detail because feeding on blood presents insects with special problems, but I have not discussed respiration because it is not affected in any particular way by haematophagy. Naturally there is a subjective element in the choice of topics for discussion and the weight given to each. I hope that I have not let my enthusiasm for particular subjects get the better of me on too many occasions and that the subject material achieves an overall balance.

mechanical vector example: An Introduction to Tensors and Group Theory for Physicists Nadir Jeevanjee, 2015-03-11 The second edition of this highly praised textbook provides an introduction to tensors, group theory, and their applications in classical and quantum physics. Both intuitive and rigorous, it aims to demystify tensors by giving the slightly more abstract but conceptually much clearer definition found in the math literature, and then connects this formulation to the component formalism of physics calculations. New pedagogical features, such as new illustrations, tables, and boxed sections, as well as additional “invitation” sections that provide accessible introductions to new material, offer increased visual engagement, clarity, and motivation for students. Part I begins with linear algebraic foundations, follows with the modern component-free definition of tensors, and concludes with applications to physics through the use of tensor products. Part II introduces group theory, including abstract groups and Lie groups and their associated Lie algebras, then intertwines this material with that of Part I by introducing representation theory. Examples and exercises are provided in each chapter for good practice in applying the presented material and techniques. Prerequisites for this text include the standard lower-division mathematics and physics courses, though extensive references are provided for the motivated student who has not yet had these. Advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in physics and applied mathematics will find this textbook to be a clear, concise, and engaging introduction to tensors and groups. Reviews of the First Edition “[P]hysicist Nadir Jeevanjee has produced a masterly book that will help other physicists understand those subjects [tensors and groups] as mathematicians understand them... From the first pages, Jeevanjee shows amazing skill in finding fresh, compelling words to bring forward the insight that animates the modern mathematical view...[W]ith compelling force and clarity, he provides many carefully worked-out examples and well-chosen specific problems... Jeevanjee’s clear and forceful writing presents familiar cases with a freshness that will draw in and reassure even a fearful student. [This] is a masterpiece of exposition and explanation that would win credit for even a seasoned author.” —Physics Today Jeevanjee’s [text] is a valuable piece of work on several counts, including its express pedagogical service rendered to fledgling physicists and the fact that it does indeed give pure mathematicians a way to come to terms with what physicists are saying with the same words we use, but with an ostensibly different meaning. The book is very easy to read, very user-friendly, full of examples...and exercises, and will do the job the author wants it to do with style.” —MAA Reviews

mechanical vector example: The Biology of Mosquitoes, Volume 3 Transmission of Viruses and Interactions with Bacteria Alan N. Clements, 2012 The great importance of mosquitoes lies in their role as transmitters of pathogens and parasites, and in their use as experimental animals well suited to laboratory investigations into aspects of biochemistry, physiology and behaviour. The largest part of this latest volume of The Biology of Mosquitoes concerns interactions between mosquitoes and viruses and the transmission of arboviruses to their vertebrate hosts, while the remainder concerns symbiotic interactions between mosquitoes and bacteria. The introduction provides a timely review of the first major development in mosquito taxonomy for several decades. Further chapters describe the interactions between mosquitoes and the viruses that infect them, the transmission and epidemiology of seven very important arboviruses, and the biology of bacteria that are important control agents or of great biological interest. Like the earlier volumes, Volume 3 combines recent information with earlier important findings from field and laboratory to provide the broadest coverage available on the subject.

mechanical vector example: A TEXTBOOK OF VECTOR BORNE DISEASES DR. MUNEESH KUMAR, DR. SANGEETA DEVI, 2021-01-26 This book is an introduction to vector borne diseases and is designed primarily for Post graduate students and Research scholars. Now days the whole world is facing a pandemic of the most dreaded human disease caused by parasites. Therefore study of vector borne disease serves society in many ways, not only to protect humans and the environment from the deleterious effects of vector borne disease. In chapters covering rapidly expanding matter, the usually required material has been presented in a fairly concise form, and then details on special aspects have been given in the form of addenda. It is hoped that this approach will meet the needs of Post graduate students, Research scholars and provide sources for more advanced study. Efforts have been made to include the latest available information in some chapters to make the book upto-date. The constructive suggestion from the conscious readers is always cordially invited for further improvement of the book. No doubt new techniques will be developed, answers will be found to many questions that did not yield to earlier techniques and new questions will be raised. The challenge, as always, will be to integrate the results from these studies and reach new levels of sophistication into useful and productive approaches.
mechanical vector example: Microbe-vector Interactions in Vector-borne Diseases S. H. Gillespie, G. L. Smith, A. Osbourn, 2004-05-06 Several billion people are at daily risk of life threatening vector-borne diseases such as malaria, trypanosomiasis and dengue. This volume describes the way in which the causal pathogens of such diseases interact with the vectors that transmit them. It details the elegant biological adaptations that have enabled pathogens to live with their vectors and, in some circumstances, to control them. This knowledge has led to novel preventative strategies in the form of antibiotics and new vaccines which are targeted not at the pathogen itself but at its specific vector.

Not having a clear-cut material for teaching also puts pressure on the teacher when it comes to gathering information to deliver in the classroom. Having a more simplified and straightforward text material without compromising on value of content is the main aim of this book. Materials are well selected to make learning and teaching easier for the user of this book. The senior high school student is the main targeted end user of this book. However, it can also serve as a reference material for other levels of learning. The content is based on the Ghanaian and West African syllabus for senior high education. This integrated science textbook has its content organized in sections, units, and academic year. Year 1 content provides foundation tutoring. Year 2 is built on the content of year 2; likewise, year 3 has its content built on that of year 2. This approach renders a vertical upward systematic approach to learning that enables the learner to build upon previous knowledge. Reference materials, tables, charts, and units are also provided to assist the learner in doing research or performing experiments. It is our hope that this textbook will satisfy teachers and learners at the senior high level of education in the area of integrated science (comprising of basic biology, physics, chemistry, agriculture, and indigenous technology).
