mcem prep: Emerging Strategies in Neuroprotection Manangos, Lal, 2013-11-21 SOLOMON H. SNYDER Receptor Research Reaches Neurology: Relevance to Neurodegenerative Diseases and Stroke President George Bush has heralded the 1990s as the decade of the brain, based largely on the rapid escalation of advances in the molecular neuro sciences and the likelihood that these will bear therapeutic fruit before the turn of the century. There is little doubt that the 1970s and 1980s have witnessed more remarkable advances in the molecular neurosciences than all of the preceding hundred years. Identification of receptor sites for drugs and neurotransmitters along with simple, sensitive, and specific means of monitoring them has made it possible to elucidate the mechanism of action for many known drugs and to identify new chemical entities as potential therapeutic agents. At the same time, the numbers of distinct neurotrans mitters have multiplied. Prior to 1970 only the biogenic amines were well accepted as transmitters. The early 1970s witnessed the gradual acceptance ofamino acids as major excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. Identification of opiate receptors and the subsequent identification of the enkephalins as their endogenous ligands led to an appreciation of peptides as putative transmitters and the accumulation of as many as a hundred neuropeptides by the decade's end. In the 1980s the revolutions of molecular biology have been applied aggressively to the neurosciences with molecular cloning for neuropeptide precursors, many important neurochemical en zymes, and receptors for numerous transmitters.

mcem prep: Accelerated Testing for Studying Pavement Design and Performance (FY 2002) Stefan Romanoschi, 2004 This report covers the Fiscal Year 2002 project conducted at the Accelerated Testing Laboratory at Kansas State University. The project was selected and funded by the Midwest Accelerated Testing Pooled Fund Program, which includes Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. The objective of this research was to determine the effectiveness of the use of foamed asphalt stabilized Recycled Asphalt Pavement from full-depth reclamation (FAS-FDR) as base material for flexible pavements. The experiment consisted of constructing four pavements, one with a 9-in. conventional Kansas AB-3 granular base and three with 6-, 9-, and 12-in. FAS-FDR, and subjecting them to full-scale accelerated pavement test.
mcem prep: Nonlinear Time Series Randal Douc, Eric Moulines, David Stoffer, 2014-01-06 Designed for researchers and students, Nonlinear Times Series: Theory, Methods and Applications with R Examples familiarizes readers with the principles behind nonlinear time series models—without overwhelming them with difficult mathematical developments. By focusing on basic principles and theory, the authors give readers the background required to craft their own stochastic models, numerical methods, and software. They will also be able to assess the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches, and thus be able to choose the right methods for their purposes. The first part can be seen as a crash course on classical time series, with a special emphasis on linear state space models and detailed coverage of random coefficient autoregressions, both ARCH and GARCH models. The second part introduces Markov chains, discussing stability, the existence of a stationary distribution, ergodicity, limit theorems, and statistical inference. The book concludes with a self-contained account on nonlinear state space and sequential Monte Carlo methods. An elementary introduction to nonlinear state space modeling and sequential Monte Carlo, this section touches on current topics, from the theory of statistical inference to advanced computational methods. The book can be used as a support to an advanced course on these methods, or an introduction to this field before studying more specialized texts. Several chapters highlight recent developments such as explicit rate of convergence of Markov chains and sequential Monte Carlo techniques. And while the chapters are organized in a logical progression, the three parts can be studied independently. Statistics is not a spectator sport, so the book contains more than 200 exercises to challenge readers. These problems strengthen intellectual muscles strained by the introduction of new theory and go on to extend the theory in significant ways. The book helps readers hone their skills in nonlinear time series analysis and their applications.
mcem prep: The EM Algorithm and Extensions Geoffrey J. McLachlan, Thriyambakam Krishnan, 2007-11-09 The only single-source——now completely updated and revised——to offer a unified treatment of the theory, methodology, and applications of the EM algorithm Complete with updates that capture developments from the past decade, The EM Algorithm and Extensions, Second Edition successfully provides a basic understanding of the EM algorithm by describing its inception, implementation, and applicability in numerous statistical contexts. In conjunction with the fundamentals of the topic, the authors discuss convergence issues and computation of standard errors, and, in addition, unveil many parallels and connections between the EM algorithm and Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. Thorough discussions on the complexities and drawbacks that arise from the basic EM algorithm, such as slow convergence and lack of an in-built procedure to compute the covariance matrix of parameter estimates, are also presented. While the general philosophy of the First Edition has been maintained, this timely new edition has been updated, revised, and expanded to include: New chapters on Monte Carlo versions of the EM algorithm and generalizations of the EM algorithm New results on convergence, including convergence of the EM algorithm in constrained parameter spaces Expanded discussion of standard error computation methods, such as methods for categorical data and methods based on numerical differentiation Coverage of the interval EM, which locates all stationary points in a designated region of the parameter space Exploration of the EM algorithm's relationship with the Gibbs sampler and other Markov chain Monte Carlo methods Plentiful pedagogical elements—chapter introductions, lists of examples, author and subject indices, computer-drawn graphics, and a related Web site The EM Algorithm and Extensions, Second Edition serves as an excellent text for graduate-level statistics students and is also a comprehensive resource for theoreticians, practitioners, and researchers in the social and physical sciences who would like to extend their knowledge of the EM algorithm.

mcem prep: FRCEM Primary Moussa Issa, 2019-05-20 This new FRCEM PRIMARY: All-In-One Notes provides a comprehensive body of information important to an understanding of the Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Hematology, Pathology and Evidence Based Medicine required for the Primary exams. It remains the premier Emergency Medical textbook for candidates preparing for that exam. With the rapidly expanding base of medical knowledge and the time constraints, it is not always possible to read a comprehensive account of all the subjects or read individual textbooks in itself. A method needed to be developed where in all the information required for the primary exam could be summarized, concepts could be explained as well as all the information that could possibly be questioned about needed to be dealt with in a concise and precise manner. It was for these reasons, among others, that the primary book was first condensed in 2015. The initial idea was to serve as a ready source of well-crafted and informative topics that will be useful on-the-spot and that will prepare the reader for a more in-depth learning. The book's full-color format & the use of diagrams enables one to learn concepts in depth & at the same time provide a quick view of main topics that have been asked & could most likely be asked. The new layout and numerous additional colourful images and illustrations will aid the candidate to convert abstract information into easily retrievable mental images using the visualisation and association technique as well as make locating information easier.
