massimo 500 parts: Southeast Asia and the Economics of Global Climate Stabilization David A. Raitzer, Francesco Bosello, Massimo Tavoni, Carlo Orecchia, Giacomo Marangoni, Jindra Nuella G. Samson, 2015-12-01 Climate change is a global concern of special relevance to Southeast Asia, a region that is both vulnerable to the effects of climate change and a rapidly increasing emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs). This study focuses on five countries of Southeast Asia that collectively account for 90% of regional GHG emissions in recent years---Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. It applies two global dynamic economy–energy–environment models under an array of scenarios that reflect potential regimes for regulating global GHG emissions through 2050. The modeling identifies the potential economic costs of climate inaction for the region, how the countries can most efficiently achieve GHG emission mitigation, and the consequences of mitigation, both in terms of benefits and costs. Drawing on the modeling results, the study analyzes climate-related policies and identifies how further action can be taken to ensure low-carbon growth. |

massimo 500 parts: Rituals of Prosecution Jane K. Wickersham, 2012-01-01 During the Counter-Reformation, inquisition manual authors working in Italian lands adapted the Catholic Church's traditional tactics of inquisitorial procedure, which had been formulated in the medieval period, to the prosecution of philo-Protestants. Through a comparison of the texts of four such authors to contemporary inquisition processes, Jane K. Wickersham situates the Roman inquisition's prosecution of philo-Protestants within the larger framework of the complex religious upheavals of the sixteenth century. Identifying the critical role played by ritual practice in discovering and prosecuting heretical subjects, Wickersham uncovers two core reasons for its use: first, as a practical means of prosecuting a variety of philo-Protestant beliefs, and second, as an approach firmly grounded within the Catholic Church's history of prosecuting heresy. Finally, Rituals of Prosecution provides an in-depth examination of the inquisitorial processes of urban residents from humble socio-economic backgrounds, providing new insight into how the prosecution of ordinary people was conducted in the early modern era. |
massimo 500 parts: The World of Maria Gaetana Agnesi, Mathematician of God Massimo Mazzotti, 2007-12-10 The fascinating true story of mathematician Maria Agnesi. She is best known for her curve, the witch of Agnesi, which appears in almost all high school and undergraduate math books. She was a child prodigy who frequented the salon circuit, discussing mathematics, philosophy, history, and music in multiple languages. She wrote one of the first vernacular textbooks on calculus and was appointed chair of mathematics at the university in Bologna. In later years, however, she became a prominent figure within the Catholic Enlightenment, gave up academics, and devoted herself to the poor, the sick, the hungry, and the homeless. Indeed, the life of Maria Agnesi reveals a complex and enigmatic figure—one of the most fascinating characters in the history of mathematics. Using newly discovered archival documents, Massimo Mazzotti reconstructs the wide spectrum of Agnesi's social experience and examines her relationships to various traditions—religious, political, social, and mathematical. This meticulous study shows how she and her fellow Enlightenment Catholics modified tradition in an effort to reconcile aspects of modern philosophy and science with traditional morality and theology. Mazzotti's original and provocative investigation is also the first targeted study of the Catholic Enlightenment and its influence on modern science. He argues that Agnesi's life is the perfect lens through which we can gain a greater understanding of mid-eighteenth-century cultural trends in continental Europe. |

massimo 500 parts: Zealots for Souls Anne Huijbers, 2018-01-22 Zealots for souls draws attention to the impact of the Observant reforms within the Order of Preachers, and ambitiously stirs up a broad scope of questions pertaining to the institutional narratives produced within the order between c. 1388 and 1517. Through the narratives and the forms of remembrance they fostered, the author traces the development of contemporary characteristics of the Dominican self-understanding. The book shows the fluid boundaries between the genres (order chronicles, convent chronicles, collective biographies), highlights the interplay between the narrative and the intended audience, addresses the complex question of authorship, and assesses the indebtedness of 'modern' (printed) narratives to older chronicles or biographical collections. The book demonstrates that the majority of the extant institutional narratives were written by Observant Dominicans, who strived for the internal reform of their order. They wrote history to justify their own reform agenda and therefore produced invariably partisan chronicles. The work's method is widely applicable and contributes to further reassessment of institutional narratives as sources for the analysis of religious and intellectual transformations. |

massimo 500 parts: Milton's Italy Catherine Martin, 2016-12-01 This book joins a growing trend toward transnational literary studies and revives a venerable tradition of Anglo-Italian scholarship centering on John Milton. Correcting misperceptions that have diminished the international dimensions of his life and work, it broadly surveys Milton’s Italianate studies, travels, poetics, politics, and religious convictions. While his debts to Machiavelli and other classical republicans are often noted, few contemporary critics have explored the Italian sources of his anti-papal, anti-episcopal, and anti-formalist religious outlook. Relying on Milton’s own testimony, this book explores its roots in Dante, Petrarch, Ariosto, and that great Venetian enemy of the pope, Paolo Sarpi, thereby correcting a recent tendency to make native English contexts dominate his development. This tendency is partly due to a mistaken belief that Italy was in steep decline during and after Milton’s travels of 1638-1639, the period immediately before he produced his prose critiques of the English Church, its canon law, and its censorship. Yet these were also fundamentally Italian issues that he skillfully adapted to meet contemporary English needs, a practice enabled by his extraordinarily positive experience of the Italian language, cities, academies, and music, the latter of which ultimately influenced Milton’s operatic drama, Samson Agonistes. Besides republicanism and theology (radical doctrines of free grace and free will), equally strong influences treated here include Italian Neoplatonism, cosmology, and romance epic. By making these traditions his own, Milton became what John Steadman once described as an Italianate Englishman whose classical literary tastes and critical orientation...were...to a considerable extent molded by Italian critics (1976), a view that is fully credited and updated here. |

massimo 500 parts: Juan de Valdés and the Italian Reformation Massimo Firpo, 2016-03-09 Juan de Valdés played a pivotal role in the febrile atmosphere of sixteenth-century Italian religious debate. Fleeing his native Spain after the publication in 1529 of a book condemned by the Spanish Inquisition, he settled in Rome as a political agent of the emperor Charles V and then in Naples, where he was at the centre of a remarkable circle of literary and spiritual men and women involved in the religious crisis of those years, including Peter Martyr Vermigli, Marcantonio Flaminio, Bernardino Ochino and Giulia Gonzaga. Although his death in 1541 marked the end of this group, Valdés’ writings were to have a decisive role in the following two decades, when they were sponsored and diffused by important cardinals such as Reginald Pole and Giovanni Morone, both papal legates to the Council of Trent. The most famous book of the Italian Reformation, the Beneficio di Cristo, translated in many European languages, was based on Valdés’ thought, and the Roman Inquisition was very soon convinced that he had ’infected the whole of Italy’. In this book Massimo Firpo traces the origins of Valdés’ religious experience in Erasmian Spain and in the movement of the alumbrados, and underlines the large influence of his teachings after his death all over Italy and beyond. In so doing he reveals the originality of the Italian Reformation and its influence in the radicalism of many religious exiles in Switzerland and Eastern Europe, with their anti-Trinitarians and finally Socinian outcomes. Based upon two extended essays originally published in Italian, this book provides a full up-dated and revised English translation that outlines a new perspective of the Italian religious history in the years of the Council of Trent, from the Sack of Rome to the triumph of the Roman Inquisition, reconstructing and rethinking it not only as a failed expansion of the Protestant Reformation, but as having its own peculiar originality. As such it will be welcomed by all scholars wishin |

massimo 500 parts: Food Gurus Stephen Vines, 2025-08-05 A fascinating overview of culinary history exploring the lives of twenty people who have impacted the way we dine. “An intriguing dip into the lives and obsessions of an eclectic round up of ancient and modern food heroes whose tastes affect ours. Easy to digest, great recipes and some surprises.” —Lindsey Bareham, The Times (London) Centuries ago, humankind thought of food as mere sustenance, but over time, it has evolved into something bigger. Now single dishes and entire cuisines can become trendy, cultural phenomena and media obsessions around the world. Why? How did we get here? Throughout history, there have been individuals who, for better or worse, have transformed how we eat and how we think about what we eat. In Food Gurus, author Stephen Vines delves into the culinary past and examines the careers and legacies of twenty of these influential people. They are chefs, writers, entrepreneurs, and other icons of the food world. Vines discusses each guru’s personal journey, their character and passion, and the social events and history that shaped their approach to food. There are even recipes to better illustrate the type of cooking they produced—or had someone make for them. Among the gurus are the inventor of molecular gastronomy, Ferran Adria; one of Britain’s most influential cookery writers, Isabella Beeton; the “mother of American cooking” and voice for sustainable agriculture, Alice Waters; and food industry innovator and entrepreneur Henry Heinz. Other featured gurus include: Robert Atkins James Beard Paul Bocuse Antonin Carême Julia Child Elizabeth David Raymond “Ray” Kroc Catherine de Medici Jamie Oliver Gordon Ramsay And more! Whether you enjoy history, eating, or sociology, Food Gurus has something to sate your appetite. “[Vines’s] choice of gurus is canny, amusing and well-researched, telling the reader not only about his heroes’ virtues but also their clay feet.” —Paul Levy, co-author of The Official Foodie Handbook |

Luxury, fashion and social standing are intimately connected to consumption on credit. Drawing on data from the fashion trade, this fascinating edited volume shows how the concepts of credit, trust and bankruptcy changed towards the end of the early modern period (1500−1800) and in the beginning of the modern period. Focusing on Sweden, with comparative material from France and other European countries, this volume draws together emerging and established scholars from across the fields of economic history and fashion. This book is an essential read for scholars in economic history, financial history, social history and European history. |
massimo 500 parts: Encyclopedia of Business Ethics and Society Robert W. Kolb, 2007-08-21 2008 Best Reference, Library Journal As a field of study, business ethics aims to specify the principles under which businesses must operate to behave ethically. Thus business ethics focuses on such issues as those that have recently attracted so much public scrutiny: executive compensation, honesty in accounting, transparency, treatment of stakeholders, and respect for the environment. These are, in fact, perennial questions that accompany the long history of human economic activity and that will also be present through an indeterminate future. The five volumes of this ultimate resource recognize the inherent unity between business ethics and business and society, that stems from their shared primary concern with value in commerce. This Encyclopedia spans the relationships among business, ethics, and society by including more than 800 entries that feature broad coverage of corporate social responsibility, the obligation of companies to various stakeholder groups, the contribution of business to society and culture, and the relationship between organizations and the quality of the environment. Key Features Embraces commerce in all of its ethical and social dimensions Offers comprehensive and fairly lengthy essays on such crucial topics as justice, freedom, stakeholder theory, and regulation Provides very brief essays that introduce important personages in the field, while other similarly brief entries explain the nature and function of various organizations Includes contributions from respected authorities in the fields of management, psychology, sociology, communication, political science, philosophy, and other related fields Cross-references to other entries in the Encyclopedia and includes a list of references and suggested readings for each article Key Themes Accounting Applied Ethics Corporate Management and the Environment Corporate Powers, Organization and Governance Corporations in the Social Sphere Customers and Consumers Economics and Business Employee Issues Environmental Thought, Theory, Regulation, and Legislation Ethical Thought and Theory Finance Gender, Age, Ethnicity, Diversity, and Sexual Preference Information Systems International Social and Ethical Issues Justice Legislation and Regulation Management Marketing Organizations Political Theory, Thought, and Policy Problematic Practices Rights The Encyclopedia of Business Ethics and Society is the premier reference tool for students, scholars, practitioners, and others interested in gaining knowledge of the role business plays with regard to the environment in which it exists—making it a must-have resource for all academic libraries. |
