Smith, 2016-12-05 Latinos have emerged as one of the fastest-growing ethnic populations in the American South. A 'New South' is taking shape in a region where culture and class relations have traditionally been constructed along black-white divides and experience absorbing culturally or linguistically foreign immigrants has been limited. This book presents a multidisciplinary examination of the impacts and responses across the Southeastern United States to contemporary Latino immigration. The rapid and large-scale movement of Latinos into the region has challenged old precepts and forced Southerners to confront the impacts of globalization and transnationalism in their daily lives. Drawing on theoretical perspectives as well as empirical research, the work provides insights into the Latino experience in both urban and rural locales. Each chapter is centred on the nexus between the immigrants' experiences in settling and adapting to new lives in the American South and the construction of transformed social, economic, political and cultural spaces. |

Albert Sergio Laguna investigates the generational shifts and tensions in a Cuban America where the majority is now made up of those who have arrived since the 1990s and those born in the US. To probe these changes, Laguna examines the aesthetic and social logics of a wide range of popular culture forms originating in Miami and Cuba from the 1970s through the 2010s. They include the stand-up comedy of performers like Alvarez Guedes, festivals, a media distribution network in Cuba called el paquete, morning radio shows, and the viral content of Los Pichy Boys, among others. This study illustrates the centrality of play in a community that has been described historically as angry and melancholic. | louisvilles growing cuban community: A Calculus of Color Robert Kuhn McGregor, 2015-04-02 In 1947, as the integration of Major League Baseball began, the once-daring American League had grown reactionary, unwilling to confront postwar challenges--population shifts, labor issues and, above all, racial integration. The league had matured in the Jim Crow era, when northern cities responded to the Great Migration by restricting black access to housing, transportation, accommodations and entertainment, while blacks created their own institutions, including baseball's Negro Leagues. As the political climate changed and some major league teams realized the necessity of integration, the American League proved painfully reluctant. With the exception of the Cleveland Indians, integration was slow and often ineffective. This book examines the integration of baseball--widely viewed as a triumph--through the experiences of the American League and finds only a limited shift in racial values. The teams accepted few black players and made no effort to alter management structures, and organized baseball remained an institution governed by tradition-bound owners. |

In the development of this book, we have explored how reforms in American higher education are impacting the role of universities and their faculty. Contributors were asked to imagine possibilities for research and outreach by providing salient examples of how higher education can lead and change how we view the role of health and education within institutions and society. Each author writes across common themes that address the problems and possibilities of higher education curriculum and projects aligned with the mission of stewardship. The authors highlight interdisciplinary approaches and projects for faculty work, modification of the Teaching-Research-Service expectations, and community initiatives that can emerge from real-life problems (to impact wellbeing) and create rich and deep research possibilities for practitioners to impact both higher education and society.
