Highlighting the administrative foundations of patent law, the book argues that, in its international form, it can be analysed using the same principles of participation, transparency, and accountability found in national administrative law. At the heart of the book is a simple question: What does international patent law look like when we approach it through the lens of these values? What is being left out when patent law is described predominantly in terms of its technical legal provisions or economic impact? The book presents three interrelated contexts: EU patent law, bilateral trade agreements, and the multilateral space. Modern patent law is increasingly discussed in terms of national competitiveness or economic potential, which reveals only a narrow understanding of how patent law evolves and functions. Their new interactive features are relevant to the struggling care sector. As Western societies age, the demand for care services rises, yet the workforce does not grow at the same rate. This book explores the potential of social robots to support the workforce and enhance the well-being of residents in care homes. Using a socio-informatics approach, this research investigates how residents and caregivers interact with social robots, examines and facilitates their appropriation, and provides insights into the development of the robots' software and hardware. The research and development were carried out collaboratively in care homes with the people who work and live there. The findings indicate that social robots can be beneficial in care homes. They broaden the options for social care workers and, when integrated into daily routines, can provide brief respite periods. Additionally, they positively impact residents by engaging them in cognitive and physical activities. However, the robots can only assist, and not replace, care workers.

Kuehn, Wei Zhu, 2023-11-23 Since their development a decade ago, human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) have revolutionized the study of human disease, given rise to regenerative medicine technologies, and provided exceptional opportunities for pharmacologic research. These cells provide an essentially unlimited supply of cell types that are difficult to obtain from patients, such as neurons or cardiomyocytes, or are difficult to maintain in primary cell culture. iPSC can be obtained from patients afflicted with a particular disease but, in combination with recently developed gene editing techniques, can also be modified to generate disease models. Moreover, the new techniques of 3 Dimensional printing and materials science facilitate the generation of organoids that can mirror organs under disease conditions.
