lud foe no hooks: Jack and Jill Louisa May Alcott, 2017-07-04 From the author of Little Women: An American classic of young best friends in a rustic New England town. In post–Civil War New England, thirteen-year-old Jack Minot and Janey Pecq are inseparable best friends who live next door to each other in the town of Harmony Village. The pair does everything together—so much so that Janey is nicknamed “Jill” to fit the old children’s rhyme. One winter day, the friends share a sled down a treacherous hill and both end up injured and bedridden. Unable to go out and have fun, Jack, Jill, and their circle of friends begin to learn about more than the fun and games of their youth and discover what it means to grow up—exploring their town, their hearts, and the big, wide world beyond for the first time. This charming, wistful coming-of-age tale, written twelve years after Louisa May Alcott’s classic Little Women, examines the strange, tempestuous changes of adolescence with homespun heart and worldly wisdom.

lud foe no hooks: Have with You to Saffron-Walden Thomas Nashe, 2013-07 This early work by Thomas Nashe was originally published in 1596 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Have with You to Saffron-Walden' is a work written as a response to Gabriel Harvey's 'Pierce's Supererogation' during their lengthy feud. Thomas Nashe was born in November 1567. He was an English Elizabethan Pamphleteer, playwright, poet and satirist, but little is known with certainty about his life. Much of the information we have has been inferred from his writings. Nashe's first appearance in print was his preface to Robert Greene's Menaphon (1589), in which he offers a brief definition of art and an overview of contemporary literature. His early exercise in euphuism The Anatomy of Absurdity was published in the same year. From then on Nashe became involved in numerous political and religious causes, including the Martin Marprelate controversy where he sided with the bishops. Nashe offers an important insight into the workings of 16th century English life and his writings will continue to be studied for both their literary content and historical relevance.

lud foe no hooks: The Money Game in Old New York Clifford Browder, 2014-07-15 I got to be a millionaire afore I know'd it hardly, remarked the Wall Street financier Daniel Drew (1797-1879). An uneducated farm boy from Putnam County, New York, he became in turn a successful cattle drover, a circus clown, tavern keeper, a shrewd Hudson River steamboat operator, and an unscrupulous speculator. As the colorful Uncle Daniel of Wall Street-his whiskered face seamed with wrinkles and twinkling with steel-gray eyes—time and again he disrupted the financial markets with manipulations whereby he either won or lost millions of dollars. Having got religion upon hearing a scary hell-fire sermon at the age of fourteen, Drew was also a fervent Methodist. Rumors of his financial operations—epic struggles that pitted him against Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jay Gould, and Jim Fisk, and that subjected him to threats of arrest and even kidnapping, and on one occasion to a most undignified flight from the state-baffled and disturbed the Methodists, who admittedly had little grasp of Wall Street but knew firsthand Brother Drew's tearful repentance at prayer meetings and his generosity in founding churches and seminaries. With its dual commitment to religion and rascality, Drew's career is a rich study in contradictions, an exciting chronicle of high drama and low comedy capped by bankruptcy. To understand Drew in his complexity, the author argues, is to get a grip on the heady and exploitative age that produced him—the yesterday of smartness and go ahead that helped engender the America of today. Based on primary sources, this is the first full-fledged biography of Drew, who hitherto has been known chiefly through a fictionalized and fraudulent account of 1910.

lud foe no hooks: Stiff Mary Roach, 2021-08-31 One of the funniest and most unusual books of the year....Gross, educational, and unexpectedly sidesplitting.—Entertainment Weekly Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers—some willingly, some unwittingly—have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way. In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries—from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors' conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.
lud foe no hooks: Hebrew Myths Robert Graves, Raphael Patai, 2014-05-15 The I, Claudius author’s “lightning sharp interpretations and insights . . . are here brought to bear with equal effectiveness on the Book of Genesis” (Kirkus Reviews). This is a comprehensive look at the stories that make up the Old Testament and the Jewish religion, including the folk tales, apocryphal texts, midrashes, and other little-known documents that the Old Testament and the Torah do not include. In this exhaustive study, Robert Graves provides a fascinating account of pre-Biblical texts that have been censored, suppressed, and hidden for centuries, and which now emerge to give us a clearer view of Hebrew myth and religion than ever. Venerable classicist and historian Robert Graves recounts the ancient Hebrew stories, both obscure and familiar, with a rich sense of storytelling, culture, and spirituality. This book is sure to be riveting to students of Jewish or Judeo-Christian history, culture, and religion.

lud foe no hooks: The House of Arden E. Nesbit, 2019-06-17 “The House of Arden” is a 1908 children's novel written by English poet and author Edith Nesbit. The story revolves around Edred and Elfrida Arden, two children from a poor background who inherit an old, run-down castle and attempt to track down their lost family fortunes which would enable them to restore it to its former glory. Edith Nesbit (1858 – 1924) was an English poet and author. She is perhaps best remembered for her children's literature, publishing more than 60 such books under the name E. Nesbit. She was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, which had a significant influence on the Labour Party and British politics in general. Other notable works by this author include: “The Prophet's Mantle” (1885), “Something Wrong” (1886), and “The Marden Mystery” (1896). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

lud foe no hooks: Ben o' Bill's, the Luddite: A Yorkshire Tale D. F. E. Sykes, George Henry Walker, 2022-06-02 D. F. E. Sykes' 'Ben o' Bill's, the Luddite: A Yorkshire Tale' is a hauntingly vivid portrayal of early 19th-century England, engulfed in the throes of the Industrial Revolution. First appearing in 1898, this work distinguished itself from its contemporaries through its compelling use of the Yorkshire dialect and a profound empathy in its character depictions. At its core, the novel is a meticulous social history that captures the plight of disenfranchised handloom weavers faced with the advent of industrial mechanization. Sykes delivers a narrative steeped in the authenticity of local culture and traditions, unraveling the complexities faced by the Luddites, who are often much misunderstood as mere antagonists of progress. The literary style is evocative and genuine, resonating the era's socio-political tensions alongside a richly textured backdrop of the Colne Valley during its period of labor unrest. Sykes, who alongside G. H. Walker originally lent his pen to this work, imbues his prose with a reflective understanding born of his deep familiarity with Yorkshire and its intricate social fabric. In 'Ben o' Bill's, the Luddite', Sykes' scholarly knowledge complements his narrative technique, merging a historian's precision with a storyteller's emotion. This fusion not only signifies the groundbreaking methodologies in documenting social histories at the time but also reflects an impassioned perspective intending to humanize the Luddites, their struggles, and their noble, if futile, fight against the unchecked forces of industrialism and oppressive government policies. Readers seeking an insightful glimpse into the textile industry's turbulent transformation and the human cost of rapid technological change will find 'Ben o' Bill's, the Luddite: A Yorkshire Tale' to be of significant interest. Those invested in labor history, linguistics, or societal conflict dynamics will garner substantial merit from Sykes' meticulous research and rich narrative. Furthermore, admirers of regional literature and dialect will be invariably intrigued by the linguistic authenticity that Sykes presents. An essential read, the book stands out as a testament to the necessity of understanding the past to comprehend the socioeconomic struggles that resonate even in contemporary society.

William Ambrose Spicer, a well-respected historian and theologian, brings a depth of knowledge and expertise to his writing, positioning himself as a leading voice in the field of social analysis.   lud foe no hooks: The Reign of Arthur Christopher Gidlow, 2005-01-01 Did King Arthur really exist? The Reign of Arthur takes a fresh look at the early sources describing Arthur's career and compares them to the reality of Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries. It presents, for the first time, both the most up to date scholarship and a convincing case for the existence of a real sixth-century British general called Arthur. Where others speculate wildly or else avoid the issue, Gidlow, remaining faithful to the sources, deals directly with the central issue of interest to the general reader: does the Arthur that we read of in the ninth-century sources have any link to a real leader of the fifth or sixth century? Was Arthur a powerful king or a Dark Age general co-cordinating the British resistance to Saxon invaders? Detailed analysis of the key Arthurian sources, contemporary testimony and archaeology reveals the reality of fragmented British kingdoms uniting under a single military command to defeat the Saxons. There is plausible and convincing evidence for the existence of their war-leader, and, in this challenging and provocative work, Gidlow concludes that the Dark Age hypothesis of Arthur, War-leader of the Kings of the Britons, not only fits the facts, it is the only way of making sense of them.

lud foe no hooks: John Bradburne Didier Rance, 2017-05-25 From the Foreword by Jean Vanier:'The story of John's life has touched my heart and soul, and brought me closer to God. It has revealed to me a God wonderfully full of surprises, better, more intelligent, more creative than we could imagine. An extraordinary God who cannot be confined in rational concepts or in an ordinary religious life.'~John Bradburne (1921-1979) lived an extraordinary life. He was a reluctant hero of the Second World War, a pilgrim and a hermit, a poet and a musician, a joker and a mystic, and a theologian. After many years travelling and searching, he found the place that God wanted him to be - living alongside men and women suffering with leprosy in Mtemwa, Zimbabwe, which he helped transform into a community of peace, joy and love. During the civil war of 1979, John was kidnapped and murdered. Since his martyrdom, word of his life has spread around the world, and miracles have occurred in association with his name.John Bradburne: The Vagabond of God is the most comprehensive biography of this remarkable man, based on three years of research through the archives of the John Bradburne Memorial Society (www.johnbradburne.com), interviews with people who knew John, and travels in his footsteps. The book was published first in France, where it won the Grand Prix Catholique de Littrature.

lud foe no hooks: Mideast Beast Joel Richardson, 2022-10-27 I am firmly convinced that Islam is the single greatest challenge the Church will face before the return of Jesus, yet most are still either asleep or in denial. Mideast Beast completes and establishes the revolutionary argument introduced in Joel Richardson's New York Times Bestselling Islamic Antichrist, namely that the Antichrist will be a Muslim, whose empire will arise out of the Middle East. Whereas most students of the Bible have long held that some form of humanism or universalist religion would catapult the Antichrist to world power, Mideast Beast: The Scriptural Case for an Islamic Antichrist systematically proves from that the long awaited system of the Antichrist is even now before us and knocking at our door. Through a highly scholarly, theologically grounded, yet simple presentation, Richardson thoroughly corrects the objections of critics, establishing beyond a doubt, the Biblical case for an Islamic Antichrist.
