In prima approsimazione, le narrazioni ci mettono di fronte a un fenomeno simile a quello che accade quando guardiamo un film: non vediamo la cinepresa, ma percepiamo nettamente il luogo invisibile in cui essa è collocata. Il volume mette anzitutto a fuoco la questione del punto di vista in tutta la sua complessità teorica. In un testo narrativo, infatti, non c'è soltanto un punto di vista materiale (percettivo), ma c'è anche un punto di vista ideologico, che orienta la selezione delle parole, e più in generale, che organizza tutto il racconto, a diversi livelli. Scopriamo così che ogni racconto nasce dall'intrecciarsi di vari punti di vista, spesso non coincidenti: quello dell'autore, quello del narratore, quelli dei personaggi, e altri ancora. Nella seconda parte Turchetta mostra, analizzando alcuni testi, come molta narrativa del Novecento dal verismo ai giorni nostri, si sia sforzata di rendere la complessità del reale adottando, in vari modi, il punto di vista di qualcuno che capisce poco.
