m1917 manual: U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30 M1917 Enfield: FM 23-6 War Department, 2013-10 The M1917 Enfield, formally named United States rifle, cal .30, Model of 1917 was an American modification of the British .303 caliber P14 rifle developed and manufactured from 1917-1918. The Enfield rifle was noted for several design features. It was designed with a rear receiver aperture sight, protected by sturdy ears, a design that proved to be faster and more accurate than the typical mid-barrel sight. Future American rifles, such as the 1903-A3 Springfield, M1 and M1 Carbine would all use such receiver sights. The M1917 sight was situated on an elongated receiver bridge, which added weight to the action, as well as lengthening the bolt. The M1917 action proved very strong, and was used as the basis for a variety of commercial and gunsmith-made sporting rifles in standard and magnum calibers between the world wars and after. Today, the Enfield is used as a ceremonial and drilling rifle. For battle purposes, the Danish still use the M1917 as a service weapon due to the high reliability of the bolt-action rifle in harsh conditions. Created in 1942, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M1917's design and capabilities. Intended as a field manual for operation and maintenance, it details gun assembly, marksmanship techniques, accessories, and much more. m1917 manual: Kangzhan Leland Ness, Bin Shih, 2016-09-16 Kangzhan: Guide to Chinese Ground Forces 1937–45 is the first ready reference to the organization and armament of Chinese ground forces during the Sino-Japanese War of 1937–45. The work integrates Chinese, Japanese and Western sources to examine the details of the structure and weapons of the period. Recent scholarship has contributed greatly to our understanding of China's role in the war, but this is the first book to deal with the bottom-level underpinnings of this massive army, crucial to an understanding of its tactical and operational utility. An introductory chapter discusses the military operations in China, often given short shrift in World War II histories. The work then traces the evolution of the national army's organizational structure from the end of the Northern Expedition to the conclusion of World War II. Included are tables of organization and strength reports for the wartime period. The armament section illustrates and details not only the characteristics of the many and varied weapons used in China, many seen nowhere else, but also their acquisition and such local production as was undertaken. This is complemented by a chapter on the arsenals and their evolution and production programs. The Chinese army was one of the largest of the war and it, and Japan's, fought longer than any other. It faced unique challenges, including fragmented loyalties, huge expanses of territory, poor logistics networks, inadequate arms supplies, and, often, incompetence and corruption. Nevertheless, they fought bravely in major battles through 1941 and were able to counterpunch effectively in important regions through the rest of the war. Aimed at both military historians and wargamers, this work fills an important gap in our understanding of this, the most under-appreciated army of the war. |

m1917 manual: American Tactical Advancement in World War I Jeffrey LaMonica, 2017-08-08 The U.S. Army evolved into a truly modern fighting force during World War I. When the U.S. entered the war in 1917, the infantry was its primary offensive arm. Training focused mainly on target practice, bayonet charges and marching drills. Antiquated tactics emphasized massive attack waves relying on ferocity to achieve battlefield objectives. Heavy casualties resulted when inexperienced American troops encountered entrenched German veterans trained in the use of modern artillery and machine guns. By war's end the American Expeditionary Force had progressed along a bloody learning curve, developing sophisticated techniques--small flexible formations, fire-and-maneuver and infiltration--for breaking the trench warfare stalemate. Eventually, the AEF integrated new weapons like poison gas, tanks and aircraft into its offensive tactics and pioneered the mechanized combined arms warfare still practiced by the U.S. Army. The exploits of the Fifth Red Diamond Division exemplify this critical period of development. |
