marc sopher md: To Be Or Not to Be . . . Pain Free M. D. Marc D. Sopher, 2003-01-30 Much of the chronic and recurrent pain and discomfort that we all experience is psychologically induced. This psychologically induced pain is called TMS, or The Mindbody Syndrome. TMS most commonly affects the back, neck, and legs, but can affect any part of the body or organ system. Some common TMS disorders include headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disorder, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), and fibromyalgia. Using today's popular lingo, TMS is a mindbody disorder – the symptoms arise from the mind and are experienced by the body. Thus, The Mindbody Syndromeis an appropriate title. With the information in this book, I am optimistic that you will be able to eliminate your pain, no matter where it is. You will do this with knowledge. Simply by changing how you think about the connection between your brain and body, you will begin to feel better. I will not be recommending oral medication, special exercises, surgery, injections, physical therapy, chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, massage therapy or any other of the multitude of alternative therapies that have sprung up in an effort to combat the explosion of chronic and recurrent pain in our society. Just knowledge. |
marc sopher md: The Great Pain Deception Steve Ozanich, 2020-04-28 The Great Pain Deception takes us on a compelling expedition into the late Dr. John Sarno's seminal work on TMS, The Mindbody Syndrome. Dr. Sarno has stated that Steve Ozanich humanized my work. It has been successful in helping many thousands of people to heal from various health disorders, including chronic pain and disease. Describing in detail, Steve walks us through his life of chronic pain to freedom after his discovering of TMS. He then delves deeper into the causes and effects of both pain and disease, synthesizing a new paradigm in understanding our health and healing. TMS is the missing link that has been steadfastly searched for in healing. However, it remains controversial just as all new truths that come to be. Healing from most chronic pain and many other health disorders does not require surgery, drugs, or any medical modality, only a deeper understanding. The Great Pain Deception researches the psychology behind suffering, including memetics, social contagion, placebos, and why the medical industry, along with some sufferers, reject the healing solutions. The medical industry by-and-large treats symptoms, which is a failed model in healing. We currently possess the most advanced techniques for healing back pain in the history of humankind, yet back pain has risen to become the #1 cause of disability in the world. The back pain problem has gotten worse, not better, because the industry has focused on treating pain and not on its cause. True healing occurs when the cause of pain and disease is dissolved, not by treating the structure and symptoms of the physical body. Eliminate the cause and you eliminate the suffering. The successes of The Great Pain Deception and TMS are growing and can be found online and on YouTube and inside its many pages. Success is measured in the healings themselves. This book describes the deeper understanding necessary to be well again, and more. |
marc sopher md: My Pain-Body Solution Michael J. Murray, 2022-02-01 Michael J. Murray’s powerful memoir chronicles his difficult battle to conquer his undiagnosed pain. Murray confides his emotional torment and near collapse as numerous doctors—most of whom don’t actually take the time to truly listen to their desperate patient—promise relief but only deliver ineffective treatments, contradicting diagnoses, and often dispassionate care. In the end, Murray’s chance discovery in a book on back pain leads to a dawning awareness of the emotional root of his near-constant agony. As he digs deeper into this line of medicine and therapy that connects the mind and body, he uncovers how significant moments from his past manifest as physical and emotional pains in his present. Murray’s recounting of his journey is honest and vulnerable, and anyone who is suffering from chronic physical or emotional pain or knows someone on this difficult path will appreciate what he learned about • the deep connection between mind and body • the inspiring, innovative methods that can cure physical and emotional pain • how to heal our inner selves to heal physical pain This eye-opening memoir is an excellent guide for anyone who wants to truly feel better and enjoy a heightened sense of well-being . . . beginning right now. |

marc sopher md: The Divided Mind John E. Sarno, 2009-10-13 The Divided Mind is the crowning achievement of Dr. John E. Sarno's distinguished career as a groundbreaking medical pioneer, going beyond pain to address the entire spectrum of psychosomatic (mindbody) disorders. The interaction between the generally reasonable, rational, ethical, moral conscious mind and the repressed feelings of emotional pain, hurt, sadness, and anger characteristic of the unconscious mind appears to be the basis for mindbody disorders. The Divided Mind traces the history of psychosomatic medicine, including Freud's crucial role, and describes the psychology responsible for the broad range of psychosomatic illness. The failure of medicine's practitioners to recognize and appropriately treat mindbody disorders has produced public health and economic problems of major proportions in the United States. One of the most important aspects of psychosomatic phenomena is that knowledge and awareness of the process clearly have healing powers. Thousands of people have become pain-free simply by reading Dr. Sarno's previous books. How and why this happens is a fascinating story, and is revealed in The Divided Mind. |

marc sopher md: Revolution or Renaissance D. Paul Schafer, 2008-04-29 In Revolution or Renaissance, D. Paul Schafer subjects two of the most powerful forces in the world – economics and culture – to a detailed and historically sensitive analysis. He argues that the economic age has produced a great deal of wealth and unleashed tremendous productive power; however, it is not capable of coming to grips with the problems threatening human and non-human life on this planet. After tracing the evolution of the economic age from the publication of Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations in 1776 to the present, he turns his attention to culture, examining it both as a concept and as a reality. What emerges is a portrait of the world system of the future where culture is the central focus of development. According to Schafer, making the transition from an economic age to a cultural age is imperative if global harmony, environmental sustainability, economic viability, and human well-being are to be achieved. marc sopher md: Figuring Space Gilles Châtelet, 2010-12-15 In Figuring Space Gilles Châtelet seeks to capture the problem of intuition of mobility in philosophy, mathematics and physics. This he does by means of virtuality and intensive quantities (Oresme, Leibniz), wave-particle duality and perspective diagrams, philosophy of nature and Argand's and Grassman's geometric discoveries and, finally, Faraday's, Maxwell's and Hamilton's electrophilosophy. This tumultuous relationship between mathematics, physics and philosophy is presented in terms of a comparison between intuitive practices and Discursive practices. The following concepts are treated in detail: The concept of virtuality; thought experiments; diagrams; special relativity; German Naturphilosophie and `Romantic' science. Readership: The book does not require any considerable mathematical background, but it does insist that the reader quit the common instrumental conception of language. It will interest professional philosophers, mathematicians, physicists, and even younger scientists eager to understand the `unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics'. |

Sachar expands the scope of his commentary and imbues it with a critical depth and objectivity that comes from 20 additional years of active involvement in the service of the university. |

marc sopher md: Thrombolytic Therapy in Acute Ischemic Stroke Werner Hacke, Gregory J. DelZoppo, Matthias Hirschberg, 1991-06-11 During the last decade scientists in both basic and clinical research have renew ed their interest in the potential role of thrombolytic therapy in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. The reevaluation of this approach was kindled by our growing knowledge of the pathogenesis of thrombotic and embolic stroke and by the development of new thrombolytic agents. With no proven therapy for acute ischemic stroke available, the potential value of early pharmacologic recanalization of occluded vessels in the management of acute stroke patients - an approach that has been supported by animal experiments and a limited number of uncontrolled clinical pilot studies - is again under scrutiny. A sym posium on Thrombolysis in Acute Cerebral Ischemia was held in Heidel berg, Germany, in May 1990 to summarize and discuss the pathophysiological background for thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke and the recent ex perimental and clinical experience with the new generation of thrombolytic agents. The editors are fortunate to be able to include authoritative manuscripts from almost all the speakers at the symposium. These include reports of work by the most active investigators in this challenging field. The editors wish to express their gratitude to all the contributors for the additional work they have undertaken. Additionally, we would like to thank Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, for its generous assistance in the preparation and rapid publication of this volume. Heidelberg, August 1990 WERNER HACKE GREGORY J. marc sopher md: The Essential Marcus Aurelius Jacob Needleman, John Piazza, 2008-01-10 This inaugural-and all new-Tarcher Cornerstone Edition presents a stunningly relevant and reliable translation of the thoughts and aphorisms of the Stoic philosopher and Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, properly placing the philosopher-king's writings within the vein of the world's great religious and ethical traditions. The late antique world possessed no voice like that of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (121-180 CE). His private meditations on what constitutes a good life have withstood the centuries and reach us today with the same penetrating clarity and shining light as the words of Shakespeare, Emerson, or Thoreau. In this remarkable new translation, bestselling religious philosopher Jacob Needleman and classics scholar John P. Piazza have retained the depth of Marcus's perspective on life. They have carefully selected and faithfully rendered those passages that clarify Marcus's role as someone who stood within the great religious and ethical traditions that extend throughout every culture in human history. The voice that emerges from their translation is a universal one, equally recognizable to students of Christ, Buddha, the Vedas, the Talmud, and to anyone who sincerely searches for a way of meaning in contemporary life. |

marc sopher md: Synaptic Function Neurosciences Institute (New York, N.Y.), 1987 This book consists of five sections. The first section details methods for analyzing both presynaptic and postsynaptic function and emphasizes the molecular aspects of synapses. It describes ongoing studies of neurotransmitter release, voltage- sensitive ion channels, and electronic transmission at gap junctions. The second section focuses on the growing menagerie of neurotransmitters: their catagorization into chemical families, their relation to ion channels, their modulation by second messenger systems and their role in pharmacologic action. The third section considers the important relationship of transmitter diversity and synaptic types to the behavior of actual cellular networks. All of the studies described in these sections point to the necessity of considering interactions between anatomy, chemistry, physiology and pharmacology if synaptic function is to be understood at any one of these levels of analysis. |
marc sopher md: Healing Is Yours Phillip Goldfedder, 2005-07-01 Healing Is Yours shows you how to receive healing by learning and applying basic biblical principles. You may be someone who does not believe in healing. For most of his life, author Phil Goldfedder, a Jewish neurosurgeon, did not believe in healing either. In fact, for most of his life he did not even believe in Jesus. When he was miraculously healed of chronic intractable pain, however, his whole belief system underwent an exciting and radical transformation. Now Dr. Goldfedder knows that Jesus is the Great Physician who can heal you everywhere you hurt, no matter what the condition may be. This user-friendly book was written under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to provide comfort and hope to all those who are seeking a healing of any kind. Its uplifting truths will help you to believe for your healing even before you see it. There is really only one prerequisite before reading this book--a strong desire to be healed and to be released from the suffering your illness has caused without regard to any traditional denominational beliefs, long-held ideas or philosophies you may have, or any scientific principles that deny the possibility of healing. As you read, you will learn how to blend the power of God's Word (the Holy Bible) with faith, trust, hope, and belief that will help you to understand truly that Healing Is Yours. God's love for you is steadfast, and He wants you to walk in health and happiness. |
marc sopher md: Identity Development During STEM Integration for Underrepresented Minority Students Sophie L. Kuchynka, Alexander E. Gates, Luis M. Rivera, 2020-11-30 Over the past three decades, research efforts and interventions have been implemented across the United States to increase the persistence of underrepresented minority (URM) students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This Element systematically compares STEM interventions that offer resources and opportunities related to mentorship, research, and more. We organize the findings of this literature into a multi-phase framework of STEM integration and identity development. We propose four distinct phases of STEM integration: Phase 1: High School; Phase 2: Summer before College; Phase 3: First Year of College; and Phase 4: Second Year of College through Graduation. We combine tenets of theories about social identity, stereotypes and bias, and the five-factor operationalization of identity formation to describe each phase of STEM integration. Findings indicate the importance of exploration through exposure to STEM material, mentorship, and diverse STEM communities. We generalize lessons from STEM interventions to URM students across institutions. |
