In Making Lahore Modern, William J. Glover investigates the traditions that shaped colonial Lahore. In particular, he focuses on the conviction that both British and Indian actors who implemented urbanization came to share: that the material fabric of the city could lead to social and moral improvement. This belief in the power of the physical environment to shape individual and collective sentiments, he argues, links the colonial history of Lahore to nineteenth-century urbanization around the world. Glover highlights three aspects of Lahore’s history that show this process unfolding. First, he examines the concepts through which the British understood the Indian city and envisioned its transformation. Second, through a detailed study of new buildings and the adaptation of existing structures, he explores the role of planning, design, and reuse. Finally, he analyzes the changes in urban imagination as evidenced in Indian writings on the city in this period. Throughout, Glover emphasizes that colonial urbanism was not simply imposed; it was a collaborative project between Indian citizens and the British. Offering an in-depth study of a single provincial city, Glover reveals that urban change in colonial India was not a monolithic process and establishes Lahore as a key site for understanding the genealogy of modern global urbanism. The book mainly addresses the issue of Existence of God from the point of view of rational arguments. It furnishes cogent reasons as to why we cannot see God. The beauty of God lies in His being Hidden from our physical eyes, and yet being apparent to us through his creation and revelation. The universe, human nature, morality, universal acceptance of God, supremacy of Prophets and testimony of the righteous are the bases on which the author successfully develops the arguments for the existence of God. For a reflective mind everything in the world points to God. Even the smallest constituent of the universe presents an unfathomable puzzle for the human mind. The Christian church was, and continues to be, mainly responsible for advancing a totally false and absurd view that there is fundamental contradiction between science and religion. The Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet (sa) categorically reject this view. The author deals with the issue comprehensively and shows that there is not, and cannot be, a contradiction between science and religion. Next, the writer deals with advantages of belief in God; it brings about unity, dissuades from evil, encourages to do good, helps to understand the nature of things and brings about true satisfaction and contentment. Seven main Atheistic arguments are successfully refuted by very powerful arguments. Lastly, a comparison is made between drawbacks of Communism—which is considered to be a branch of Atheism—and advantages of economic system of Islam. |

Each chapter is based on unused original sources ranging from nineteenth century archives to contemporary newsletters. The book also includes studies of Zoroastrians on the Internet, audio-visual resources, and the modern development of Parsi novels in English. As well as studying the Zoroastrians for their own inherent importance, this book contextualizes the Zoroastrian migrations within contemporary debates on Diaspora studies. John R. Hinnells examines what it is like to be a religious Asian in Los Angeles or London, Sydney or Hong Kong. Moreover, he explores not only how experience differs from one country to another, but also the differences between cities in the same country, for example, Chicago and Houston. The survey data is used firstly to consider the distinguishing demographic features of the Zoroastrian communities in various countries; and secondly to analyse different patterns of assimilation between different groups: men and women and according to the level and type of education. Comparisons are also drawn between people from rural and urban backgrounds; and between generations in religious beliefs and practices, including the preservation of secular culture. |
