lisa grevlos augustana university: Cass County Tim Hoheisel, Andrew R. Nielsen, 2007 Cass County is flanked on its eastern border by the Red River of the North. Created by retreating glaciers, Cass County is known for its exceptionally flat topography and fertile soils. Archaeological evidence indicates that the county was home to Paleo-Indian groups as far back as 9,000 years ago. More recently, many different Native American nations foraged and hunted bison in the region. Dakota Territory was created in 1861, and Cass County was organized in 1873 with Fargo recognized as the county seat in 1875. The county is named for George Washington Cass, a former president of the Northern Pacific Railroad, which entered the county in 1872. Cass County is famous for agriculture and its bonanza farms, enormous commercial wheat farms unique to the Red River valley from the 1870s to the 1890s.
lisa grevlos augustana university: Prairie Republic Jon Lauck, 2010 Territorial politics in the late-nineteenth-century West is typically viewed as a closed-door game of unprincipled opportunism or is caricatured, as in the classic film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, as a drunken exercise in bombast and rascality. Now Jon K. Lauck examines anew the values we like to think were at work during the founding of our western states. Taking Dakota Territory as a laboratory for examining a formative stage of western politics, Lauck finds that settlers from New England and the Midwest brought democratic practices and republican values to the northern plains and invoked them as guiding principles in the drive for South Dakota statehood.

lisa grevlos augustana university: Lucy Gayheart Willa Cather, 2024-11-24 Willa Cather's Lucy Gayheart gropes a wistful way back to the time of the horse and buggy, when some men and some women loved deeply and truly and make themselves miserable and hugged their misery. Small towns, no less than Vienna and the Paris Left Bank and a Greenwich Village as dirty and noisy then as it is now, had romances of which they had a right to be proud. So it is with Lucy Gayheart, written in 1935, When she wrote the novel, Cather had just turned 60 and was in tune with the zeitgeist that, shortly, would produce the works of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. In her homey yet subtle way, she tapped into the modern loss of faith. And she created an existential novel. A romance, a feminist story It doesn't seem that way at the beginning. Indeed, Lucy Gayheart appears to be nothing more than a confection of a romance. Lucy is the bright, lively, musical girl, a stand-out among her young adult peers in the small Nebraska town of Haverford where Harry Gordon, the banker's son, is the most eligible bachelor. They seem made for each other as they skate together on the Platte River in the novel's opening scene. They have always seemed made for each other. But Lucy wants a career and has been working in Chicago. She becomes the piano accompanist to a much older classical singer, Clement Sebastian. The two fall in love in a chaste way, just as Harry sweeps into town and, with ham-handed arrogance, tells Lucy that it's about time for them to get married, right? Wrong. Then, the book seems to be on its way to becoming a feminist Horatio Alger story in which the plucky heroine will find her way to beauty (and maybe love) in the stratospheric Olympus of the high arts.

lisa grevlos augustana university: Tackling Trauma Paul A. Barker, 2019-03-14 Trauma is a universal phenomenon that can be caused by international catastrophes or individual, personal tragedy. Trauma is also a severely neglected topic in Christian literature, and while it can challenge someone’s faith in Christ, God and the ministry of his Word is central to dealing with the emotional and psychological impact of trauma. By his Spirit, through his Word, and through his church, God is available to minister to people suffering from trauma and bring transformation to their lives. In this book, a team of experienced and informed Christian professionals from around the world promote a deep biblical response to trauma through clinical and theological wisdom and their first-hand experience of witnessing and experiencing trauma. The contributions provide practical responses to people’s trauma, rather than mere descriptions of the problems, making it an ideal resource for pastors, counsellors, humanitarian workers and students.
lisa grevlos augustana university: Money and the Meaning of Life Jacob Needleman, 1991 If we understood the true role of money in our lives, writes philosopher Jacob Needleman, we would not think simply in terms of spending it or saving it. Money exerts a deep emotional influence on who we are and what we tell ourselves we can never have. Our long unwillingness to understand the emotional and spiritual effects of money on us is at the heart of why we have come to know the price of everything, and the value of nothing. Money has everything to do with the pursuit of an idealistic life, while at the same time, it is at the root of our daily frustrations. On a social level, money has a profound impact on the price of progress. Needleman shows how money slowly began to haunt us, from the invention of coins in Biblical times (when money was created to rescue the community good, not for self gain), through its hypnotic appeal in our money-obsessed era. This is a remarkable book that combines myth and psychology, the poetry of the Sufis and the wisdom of King Solomon, along with Jacob Needleman's searching of his own soul and his culture to explain how money can become a unique means of self-knowledge. As part of the Currency paperback line, it includes a User's Guide an introduction and discussion guide created for the paperback by the author -- to help readers make practical use of the book's ideas.

lisa grevlos augustana university: Psychology of Sport Injury Britton W. Brewer, Charles J. Redmond, 2016-12-06 From a gymnast hiding ankle pain so she can compete to a basketball player who withdraws from friends after a season-ending injury, it can be argued that every sport injury affects or is affected in some way by psychological factors. Given the widespread importance of psychological issues in sport injury, it is important for those working with athletes—injured or not—to be aware of the latest developments on the subject. Written by a sport psychology consultant and an athletic trainer, Psychology of Sport Injury provides a thorough explanation of the elements and effects of sport injuries along with up-to-date research and insights for practical application. The authors offer a contemporary approach to preventing, treating, rehabilitating, and communicating professionally about sport injuries that takes into account physical, psychological, and social factors. Psychology of Sport Injury presents sport injury within a broader context of public health and offers insights into the many areas in which psychology may affect athletes, such as risk culture, the many facets of pain, athlete adherence to rehab regimens, the relationship between psychological factors and clinical outcomes, collaboration, and referrals for additional support. The book explores the relevant biological, psychological, and social factors that affect given circumstances. The text consists of four parts: Understanding and Preventing Sport Injuries, Consequences of Sport Injury, Rehabilitation of Sport Injury, and Communication in Sport Injury Management. Psychology of Sport Injury includes evidence-based examples and demonstrates real-world applications that sport health care professionals often face with athletes. Additional pedagogical features include the following: • Focus on Research boxes provide the what and why of the latest research to complement the applied approach of the text. • Focus on Application boxes highlight practical examples to illustrate the material and maintain student engagement. • Psychosocial content aligned with the latest educational competencies of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) helps students prepare for athletic training examinations and supports professional development for practitioners. • A prevention-to-rehabilitation approach gives a framework for understanding sport injury, including precursors to injury, pain as a complex phenomenon, adherence to rehabilitation, and communication and management of injuries with other health care professionals as well as the athlete. • A set of chapter quizzes and a presentation package aid instructors in testing student comprehension and preparing lectures. Psychology of Sport Injury is an educational tool, reference text, and springboard to new ideas for research and practice in any line of work exposed to sport injury. Observing and committing to athletes, especially during times of physical trauma and emotional distress (which are often not separate times), are critical skills for athletic trainers, physical therapists, sport psychologists, coaches, and others who work with athletes on a regular basis.

Chiao, Shu-Chen Li (Research scientist), Rebecca Seligman, Robert Turner, 2016 This Handbook examines disparities in public health by highlighting recent theoretical and methodological advances in cultural neuroscience. It traces the interactions of cultural, biological, and environmental factors that create adverse physical and mental health conditions among populations, and investigates how the policies of cultural and governmental institutions influence such outcomes. In addition to providing an overview of the current research, chapters demonstrate how a cultural neuroscience approach to the study of the mind, brain, and behavior can help stabilize the quality of health of societies at large. The volume will appeal especially to graduate students and professional scholars working in psychology and population genetics. The Oxford Handbook of Cultural Neuroscience represents the first collection of scholarly contributions from the International Cultural Neuroscience Consortium (ICNC), an interdisciplinary group of scholars from epidemiology, anthropology, psychology, neuroscience, genetics, and psychiatry dedicated to advancing an understanding of culture and health using theory and methods from cultural neuroscience.   lisa grevlos augustana university: Sport Imagery Questionnaire Craig R. Hall, Diane E. Stevens, Allan Paivio, 2005 Imagery, in today's world of sport psychology, is as vital and fundamental a part of an athlete's mental game plan as the physical training required for conditioning. With a widespread embrace of such a philosophy comes new ways to analyse and measure its performance among athletes. In 'The Sport Imagery Questionnaire: Test Manual' the authors assess athletes' use of imagery by proposing and outlining a specifically designed evaluation of its effectiveness, the Sport Imagery Questionnaire (SIQ). The Manual is designed for sport psychologists, coaches, athletes, or anyone who seeks to understand or quantify the use of mental imagery in sport. Features: A 4-page reproduction of the Sport Imagery Questionnaire in an easy-to-photocopy format, complete with instructions and specific rating chart; A 'Scoring the SIQ' section to calculate imagery performance; A brief overview of the SIQ clearly and explicitly outlining its purpose and function; 3 comprehensive chapters dedicated to understanding imagery, explaining the methods involved in both developing and successfully utilising the SIQ, and the psychometric properties and normative data of the questionnaire itself.
