lillian bassman lingerie: Lingerie Lillian Bassman, 2012-03-01 Stunning images of women in intimate apparel from the artist heralded as “among the most important fashion photographers of the twentieth century” (The New York Times). Through the 1950s and the early 1960s, working with that era’s supermodels, fashion photographer Lillian Bassman created the quintessential modern feminine image of women in their lingerie. As Ginia Bellafante put it in the New York Times recently, “In place of heavyset women constraining themselves in what was essentially equipment, Ms. Bassman deployed immeasurably lithe models, conveying a world in which women seemed to linger in the pleasures of their own sensuality.” Fifty years later, these images have lost none of their allure, and the enormous cultural impact of the TV show Mad Men has given them new currency. “For more than half a century, Lillian Bassman’s lingerie-themed photographs have seduced the viewer, with their stark contrast, stunningly graceful figure lines, and vivid texture.” —Vanity Fair
lillian bassman lingerie: Lillian Bassman Lillian Bassman, Martin Harrison, Catherine Chermayeff, 1997 This monograph of Bassman's legendary work - the first ever published - presents the romantic, experimental visions, seen mostly in Harper's Bazaar, that brought a sophisticated new aesthetic to print photography. Yet the story of Bassman's life and newfound celebrity at age eight and the extraordinary tale of how her work survived are as remarkable as the images themselves. From the 1940s to the 1960s Bassman was at fashion's cutting edge, working as both art director and photographer. At Junior Bazaar she worked with young photographers like Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, Louis Faurer, Arnold Newman and Paul Himmel. Then, under Russian emigre and Modernist guru Alexey Brodovitch (and while using George Hoyningen-Huene's darkroom), Bassman started to shoot pictures herself - diffuse, moody images with an idiosyncratic vocabulary of gestures, and an unsettling edge. Bassman soon was in constant demand and, in addition to her editorial work, shot advertising campaigns for clients like Chanel and Balenciaga. By the 1970s, Bassman's interest in pure form began to clash with fashion's changing aesthetic. Her increasing disenchantment with fashion as an industry led her to abandon commercial photography for personal projects instead. In a bold attempt to free herself creatively from the past, she jettisoned forty years of negatives and prints - her life's work. Over twenty years later, luck resurrected a forgotten bag, brimful of hundreds of images. Now, Bassman is enjoying a resurgence at fashion's forefront, with exhibitions at museums and art galleries in New York, Paris, London, and Milan, several portfolios in the New York Times Magazine, the coveted Neiman Marcus campaign, and an upcoming 1997 retrospective exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, that plans to travel to Germany and Milan. This long-awaited monograph, presenting both past and recent work, is not only a tribute to a great talent in the annals of fashion and photography but also the story of an indomitable creative personality.
lillian bassman lingerie: Slim Aarons: Women , 2016-10-04 “Page after page reveals an unreal world. . . . Socialites in their mansions, film stars by their pools. . . . Aarons earned the trust of the very rich—Jackie Kennedy, Princess Grace of Monaco, Imelda Marcos—and the very famous—Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn—as well as a passing parade of young women at play on yachts, at exclusive beach resorts or in their expensive homes.” —The Guardian Slim Aarons: Women explores the central subject of Slim Aarons’s career—the extraordinary women from the upper echelons of high society, the arts, fashion, and Hollywood. The book presents the women who most influenced Aarons’s life and work—and the other remarkable personalities he photographed along the way—including Audrey Hepburn, the Duchess of Windsor, Diana Vreeland, Esther Williams, Marianne Faithful, and Marlene Dietrich, all featured in unforgettable photographs. The collection contains more than 250 images, the majority of which have not appeared in previous books, along with detailed captions written by one of Aarons’s closest colleagues, Laura Hawk. Hawk writes in her introduction, “Slim’s visual narratives give us an intime glimpse into the world of the upper classes and their rituals in the pursuit of leisure. That his half century of work continues to captivate successive generations of admirers—and that this is the fifth book published of his photography—reveals not only a yearning for an irretrievable time gone by but also a universal fascination with the seeming forbidden worlds of wealth and privilege.” Showcasing beautiful women at their most glamorous in some of the most dazzling locations across the globe, Slim Aarons: Women is a fresh look at the acclaimed photographer through the muses who inspired his most incredible photographs.
lillian bassman lingerie: Norman Bel Geddes Designs America Donald Albrecht, 2012-11-01 This book explores the career of one of the twentieth century's foremost theatrical and industrial designers. This book outlines the career of this complex and influential man through approximately fifty projects, bringing together never before exhibited drawings, models, photographs and films. Norman Bel Geddes was an innovative stage designer, director, producer, architect, industrial designer, futurist and urban planner. His professional credo was to simplify, to unify, to use form to communicate and, at times, shape function and to question the status quo. His research based approach to problem solving followed by his complete re imagining of a design problem, as if starting from scratch, resulted in the creation of a new, ideal product. hroughout his multi faceted career, Bel Geddes was a paradoxical figure made up of equal parts visionary and pragmatist, naturalist and industrialist, democrat and egoist. A number of products and practices now taken for granted can be traced directly back to Bel Geddes. His impact on the American landscape ranges from the U.S. federal highway system to all weather sports stadiums, revolving restaurants, modular domestic appliances and stylish home entertainment systems.
lillian bassman lingerie: Blue Jeans Daniel Miller, Sophie Woodward, 2012-02-01 This fresh and accessible ethnography offers a new vision of how society might cohere, in the face of on-going global displacement, dislocation, and migration. Drawing from intensive fieldwork in a highly diverse North London neighborhood, Daniel Miller and Sophie Woodward focus on an everyday item—blue jeans—to learn what one simple article of clothing can tell us about our individual and social lives and challenging, by extension, the foundational anthropological presumption of the normative. Miller and Woodward argue that blue jeans do not always represent social and cultural difference, from gender and wealth, to style and circumstance. Instead they find that jeans allow individuals to inhabit what the authors term the ordinary. Miller and Woodward demonstrate that the emphasis on becoming ordinary is important for immigrants and the population of North London more generally, and they call into question foundational principles behind anthropology, sociology and philosophy.

lillian bassman lingerie: If the Tabloids Are True What Are You? Matthea Harvey, 2014-08-19 A brilliant combination of poetry and visual artwork by Matthea Harvey, whose vision is nothing short of blazingly original (Time Out New York) She didn't even know she had a name until one day she heard the human explaining to another one, Oh that's just the backyard mermaid. Backyard Mermaid, she murmured, as if in prayer. On days when there's no sprinkler to comb through her curls, no rain pouring in glorious torrents from the gutters, no dew in the grass for her to nuzzle with her nose, not even a mud puddle in the kiddie pool, she wonders how much longer she can bear this life. The front yard thud of the newspaper every morning. Singing songs to the unresponsive push mower in the garage. Wriggling under fence after fence to reach the house four down which has an aquarium in the back window. She wants to get lost in that sad glowing square of blue. Don't you? —from The Backyard Mermaid Prose poems introduce deeply untraditional mermaids alongside mer-tool silhouettes. A text by Ray Bradbury is erased into a melancholy meeting with a Martian. The Michelin Man is possessed by William Shakespeare. Antonio Meucci's invention of the telephone is chronicled next to embroidered images of his real and imagined patents. If the Tabloids Are True What Are You? combines Matthea Harvey's award-winning poetry with her fascinating visual artwork into a true hybrid book, an amazing and beautiful work by one of our most ingenious creative artists.

lillian bassman lingerie: George Gershwin Howard Pollack, 2007-01-15 This comprehensive biography of George Gershwin (1898-1937) unravels the myths surrounding one of America's most celebrated composers and establishes the enduring value of his music. Gershwin created some of the most beloved music of the twentieth century and, along with Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter, helped make the golden age of Broadway golden. Howard Pollack draws from a wealth of sketches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, books, articles, recordings, films, and other materials—including a large cache of Gershwin scores discovered in a Warner Brothers warehouse in 1982—to create an expansive chronicle of Gershwin’s meteoric rise to fame. He also traces Gershwin’s powerful presence that, even today, extends from Broadway, jazz clubs, and film scores to symphony halls and opera houses. Pollack’s lively narrative describes Gershwin’s family, childhood, and education; his early career as a pianist; his friendships and romantic life; his relation to various musical trends; his writings on music; his working methods; and his tragic death at the age of 38. Unlike Kern, Berlin, and Porter, who mostly worked within the confines of Broadway and Hollywood, Gershwin actively sought to cross the boundaries between high and low, and wrote works that crossed over into a realm where art music, jazz, and Broadway met and merged. The author surveys Gershwin’s entire oeuvre, from his first surviving compositions to the melodies that his brother and principal collaborator, Ira Gershwin, lyricized after his death. Pollack concludes with an exploration of the performances and critical reception of Gershwin's music over the years, from his time to ours.

lillian bassman lingerie: Liberty Theater Rosalind Solomon, 2018 Liberty Theater by Rosalind Fox Solomon brings together her photographs made in the Southern United States from the 1970s to 1990s, never before published together as a group. Solomon's images depict a complex terrain of social and emotional issues inherited over generations: a world of class and gender divisions, implied and overt racism, competing notions of liberty, and lurking violence. Journeying through Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and South California, Solomon draws attention to cultural idiosyncrasies, paradoxes and theatrical displays: a Daughter of the Confederacy sits in costume with a china doll from her collection; a dead tree stump, fenced and suspended with wires is elevated to the status of a Civil War monument; African American boys examine a vitrine of guns as two white police manikins loom behind them. Poised between act and re-enactment, the animate and the inanimate, Solomon's images reveal how history becomes a vernacular performance and identity a form of theatre.--
