kobi kk kambon: The SAGE Encyclopedia of African Cultural Heritage in North America Mwalimu J. Shujaa, Kenya J. Shujaa, 2015-07-13 The Encyclopedia of African Cultural Heritage in North America provides an accessible ready reference on the retention and continuity of African culture within the United States. Our conceptual framework holds, first, that culture is a form of self-knowledge and knowledge about self in the world as transmitted from one person to another. Second, that African people continuously create their own cultural history as they move through time and space. Third, that African descended people living outside of Africa are also contributors to and participate in the creation of African cultural history. Entries focus on illuminating Africanisms (cultural retentions traceable to an African origin) and cultural continuities (ongoing practices and processes through which African culture continues to be created and formed). Thus, the focus is more culturally specific and less concerned with the broader transatlantic demographic, political and geographic issues that are the focus of similar recent reference works. We also focus less on biographies of individuals and political and economic ties and more on processes and manifestations of African cultural heritage and continuity. FEATURES: A two-volume A-to-Z work, available in a choice of print or electronic formats 350 signed entries, each concluding with Cross-references and Further Readings 150 figures and photos Front matter consisting of an Introduction and a Reader’s Guide organizing entries thematically to more easily guide users to related entries Signed articles concluding with cross-references |
kobi kk kambon: Black Cultures and Race Relations James L. Conyers, 2002 The essays in this book examine black cultural issues from the inside out, rather than from a majority perspective. Topics are grouped into four categories: historical studies on race; policy, economics, and race; educational studies and race; and social and cultural studies on race. Readers of this volume will gain a deeper understanding of the past and present realities experienced by black people in the United States. Sweeping changes have taken place in American society, but much work remains to be done before black Americans will no longer face the daily challenges created by racist stereotyping and assumptions. This book will furnish absorbing reading for anyone who seeks a better understanding of black-white relations in the United States from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. kobi kk kambon: African American Psychology A. Kathleen Hoard Burlew, 1992-09-04 In an effort to help develop an approach to psychology that is consistent with the African American experience, African American Psychology provides a comprehensive overview of African American behavior and personality. This collection of classical papers drawn from The Journal of Black Psychology points out that a Eurocentric perspective or orientation is inherent not only in most psychological theory but also in the research methods developed to test psychological theories. As such, those who try to understand the African American experience must not limit themselves to traditional concepts or research methods. The five sections of this volume cover both alternative and theoretical perspectives and new approaches to conducting research, the diversity of structure in African American families and the forces affecting them, African American children, and two controversial but critical areas of study: intelligence and cognition. |

kobi kk kambon: The Psychology of Self-hatred and Self-defeat Amos N. Wilson, 2020 The issue of self-hatred has very deep historical roots going way back into colonial history of the Fifteenth-century and beyond. In this text Amos Wilson details its origins as it evolved from biblical times with curse of Ham in the Old Testament up through the Middle Ages, enslavement, Jim Crow sadism and up to the present time. This experience has had long lasting impact on the creating, shaping and defining of the African American personality in particular, and the African personality worldwide. This text sets about exploring this development in its many aspects and attempts a reclamation of the African (often spelled Afrikan) mind. Herein Wilson attempts with surgical precision a remediation of this psycho-historical malady-- |

kobi kk kambon: Racial Identity Theory Chalmer E. Thompson, Robert T. Carter, 2013-04-15 Racial identity theories have been in the psychological literature for nearly thirty years. Unlike most references to racial identity, however, Thompson and Carter demonstrate the value of integrating RACE and IDENTITY as systematic components of human functioning. The editors and their contributors show how the infusion of racial identity theory with other psychological models can successfully yield more holistic considerations of client functioning and well-being. Fully respecting the mutual influence of personal and environmental factors to explanations of individual and group functioning, they apply complex theoretical notions to real-life cases in psychological practice. These authors contend that race is a pervasive and formidable force in society that affects the development and functioning of individuals and groups. In a recursive fashion, individuals and groups influence and, indeed, nurture the notion of race and societal racism. Arguing that mental health practitioners are in key, influential positions to pierce this cycle, the authors provide evidence of how meaningful change can occur when racial identity theory is integrated into interventions that attempt to diminish the distress people experience in their lives. The interventions illustrated in this volume are applied in various contexts, including psychotherapy and counseling, supervision, family therapy, support groups, and organizational and institutional environments. This book can serve the needs and interests of advanced-level students and professionals in all mental health fields, as well as researchers and scholars in such disciplines as organizational management and forensic psychology. It can also be of value to anyone interested in the systematic implementation of strategies to overcome problems of race. |

Masten, 2025-05-28 Fully updated with key advances in theory, methods, and research, the second edition of this landmark work features an expanded conceptual framework and a more global perspective on threats to human development, including climate change, war, poverty, racial injustice, and pandemics. Using a range of case examples to illustrate complex concepts, Masten provides a cogent resilience framework for promoting positive development in children at risk. New to This Edition Advances in neurobiology, more international (including non-Western) findings and examples, new discussions of cultural identity development, up-to-date intervention research, and more. Heightened focus on the interactions of multiple systems--including families, schools, culture, and communities--in supporting children's resilience. Increased attention to the impact of structural inequality, poverty, and intergenerational trauma. Coverage of rapidly emerging threats--the risks posed to children by multisystem, cascading disasters, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. |
kobi kk kambon: The Teachings of Ptahhotep Ptahhotep, 2016-02-08 2016 Reprint of 1909 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Originally published as The Instruction of Ptah-Hotep and also as The Maxims of Ptahhotep, the work is believed by some scholars to be the oldest book in the world. Authorship is attributed to Ptahhotep, a vizier under King Isesi of the Egyptian Fifth Dynasty (ca. 2414-2375 BC). It is a collection of maxims and advice in the sebayt (teaching) genre on human relations and are provided as instruction for his son. The work survives today in papyrus copies, including the Prisse Papyrus which dates from the Middle Kingdom and is on display at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. There are considerable differences between the Prisse Papyrus version and the two texts at the British Museum. The 1906 translation by Battiscombe Gunn, published as part of the Wisdom of the East series and which is reprinted here, was made directly from the Prisse Papyrus, in Paris, rather than from copies. Some lessons include: Learning by listening to everybody and knowing that human knowledge is never perfect are a leitmotif. Avoiding open conflict wherever possible should not be considered weakness. Justice should be pursued and in the end it will be a god's command that prevails. Greed is the base of all evil and should be guarded against, while generosity towards family and friends is praiseworthy. |
kobi kk kambon: History of the Association of Black Psychologists Robert L. Williams, 2008 This book, The History of Black Psychologists: Profiles of Outstanding Black Psychologists is about the origins and development of African/Black psychology. It is essentially a sequel to Robert Guthrie's book Even the Rat Was White: a historical view of psychology (1976). Whereas Guthrie's book contains the history of early Black Psychologists (as Drs. Francis Cecil Sumner, Kenneth Clark, and Martin Jenkins to name a few) from 1920 to 1950, this book contains valuable information from the 60's through 2000 about why, where, and when the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) was organized and developed. In addition, the book includes the autobiographical and biographical profiles of the lives, achievements and contributions of nearly 50 outstanding Black psychologists. There are many hard working, dedicated, and educated black men and women professionals whose success stories have not been told. Although their peers and colleagues respect many of these professionals, only a select few have been reported as outstanding. What is it, then, that qualifies one as being exceptional, above the ordinary and outstanding? It is hard to define in terms of human traits and accomplishments. What is easier is to provide examples rather than explanations of what it means to be outstanding. Such individuals who exemplify the definition of outstanding are many unknown Black Psychologists. This book will present some of these Scholar Activists. It is apparent that the majority of the Black psychologists made it against the odds. Many of these psychologists were born in southern states and had to migrate to northern states to receive a graduate education. For Black achievement is invariably a triumph over odds, a victory over struggle. In order to receive graduate education these psychologists report how they had to overcome the destructive effects of racism. Frequently, they were the only Black students in the graduate program. But they still made |

kobi kk kambon: The Education of Black People W. E. B. DuBois, 2001-06-01 Undoubtedly the most influential black intellectual of the twentieth century and one of America's finest historians, W.E.B. DuBois knew that the liberation of the African American people required liberal education and not vocational training. He saw education as a process of teaching certain timeless values: moderation, an avoidance of luxury, a concern for courtesy, a capacity to endure, a nurturing love for beauty. At the same time, DuBois saw education as fundamentally subversive. This was as much a function of the well-established role of educationfrom Plato forwardas the realities of the social order under which he lived. He insistently calls for great energy and initiative; for African Americans controlling their own lives and for continued experimentation and innovation, while keeping education's fundamentally radical nature in view. Though containing speeches written nearly one-hundred years ago, and on a subject that has seen more stormy debate and demagoguery than almost any other in recent history, The Education of Black People approaches education with a timelessness and timeliness, at once rooted in classical thought that reflects a remarkably fresh and contemporary relevance. |

White, 2017-08-15 For courses in Introduction to Psychology, African American Psychology, African American Studies, Multicultural Counseling and Cross Cultural Counseling and Psychotherapy. This text highlights the limitations of traditional psychological theories and approaches when applied to people of African descent. It provides information on how the African Centered Perspective is defined, as well as how it operates in the context of the African American family with regard to identity development, education, mental health, research, and managing contemporary issues. It links the context of African American life to the traditions, values and spiritual essence of their African ancestors in an attempt to acknowledge the African worldview and assist the African American community in addressing some of the challenges they continue to face. |
kobi kk kambon: Awakening the Natural Genius of Black Children Amos N. Wilson, 1992 Afrikan children are naturally precocious and gifted. They begin life with a natural head start. However, their natural genius is too frequently underdeveloped and misdirected. kobi kk kambon: Intellectual Warfare Jacob H. Carruthers, 1999 Exposing fallacies and reestablishing new and undistorted ways of viewing the formation of Western society, the book shows how classic literature shaped the contemporary world in intricate and sometimes startlingly and brutally honest detail. Not satisfied with simply challenging the reader to think about things differently, the volume goes further, citing specific examples and offering instruction on how to begin to retrain oneself to think about the origins of modern society in other terms. |
kobi kk kambon: African-centered Psychology Daudi Ajani ya Azibo, 2003 African-Centered Psychology: Culture-Focusing for Multicultural Competence addresses various topics on the psychology of African people. Although most analyses focus on the African-U.S. diaspora, Azibo articulates principles that are applicable to most African populations. The book opens with an introduction to the field of black psychology, its history, and its relationship to western psychology. Theories of personality are discussed, as well as a review of the diagnostic manuals of mental disorders in western psychology and psychiatry. Furthermore, Azibo suggests a restructuring of social work that respects African culture; reports the favorable results of an African-centered treatment approach; describes a Ghanaian approach to adjusting to widowhood; and reviews psychological factors related to using condoms for HIV prevention in the African-U.S. population. He also discusses issues involving contemporary hair behavior among African-U.S. women; psychological warfare tactics used by the U.S. government against revolutionary activists; and how the media can create images affecting African identity. The book concludes with empirical research studies of African identity. |

kobi kk kambon: African American Psychology Faye Z Belgrave, Kevin W Allison, 2009-07-15 This core textbook provides students with comprehensive coverage of African American psychology as a field. Each chapter integrates African and American influences on the psychology of African Americans, thereby illustrating how contemporary values, beliefs, and behaviors are derived from African culture translated by the cultural socialization experiences of African Americans in this country. The literature and research are referenced and discussed from the perspective of African culture (mostly West African) during the period of enslavement, at other critical periods in this country (e.g., early 20th century, civil rights era), and through the present. Chapters provide a review of the research literature, with a focus on applications for contemporary living. |
kobi kk kambon: The Sex Imperative Mwalimu Baruti, 2015-07-23 The Sex Imperative details the origin, historical progression and essence of european sexual insanity. It is a discussion which particularly focuses on this thought and behavior as it has been assimilated and is being practiced by Afrikans who are participating in european culture, as if it is their own. The peculiarities and extremes of european sexual thought and behavior are revealed for what they are, as well as their extent within the european community and the noneuropean world, as europeans and their culture invade and contaminate it. europeans have become the model from which we are defining and allowing our and our children's sexual being to be defined. We once considered ourselves superior moral beings, especially as sexually defined in comparison to europeans. This has changed as we have become more and more assimilated and subintegrated into european culture. If we are to follow the moral traditions of our Ancestors, and not that of another's, then we must rethink our submission to european sexual insanity because we fear rejection or persecution. To be unwilling or afraid to define and model sexual morality for our children because it may make them different from the european norm, and therefore make their lives more difficult, is for Afrikans to react out of fear. Morality, like fear, is a group, not individual, definition and state. And europeans are the group by which we are defining our children's sexual morality. This book is a discussion of both the european sexual way and the appropriate Afrikan response. |
