  lennox chp16: A Place Called Fairhavens Paul Krebill, 2001-05-10 Max Ritter,a young Montana pastor troubled by self-doubt, tries to re-gain confidence as he looks out onto the endless South Pacific from his vantage point on the southernmost shore of New Zealand. Feeling unfit for parish ministry and a failure in marriage Max has fled as far away from people as possible, after suffering the rejection of both his wife and his congregation. While on the South Island of New Zealand he meets Bronwyn MacKenzie, the young owner of Colac Bay Inn, the bed and breakfast in which he is staying. Her caring concern for him and the loving acceptance he finds in her parish church help him to regain self-confidence. Through a series of experiences Bronwyn helps Max to live and love again, and along with her church encourages him in the long process through which he is restored to ministry and to a deeper understanding of spirituality. He returns to Montana and takes a job as a handyman at Fairhavens, a resort and retreat center in the mountains near Yellowstone Park. While Fairhavens is threatened by a Disney-like theme park developing nearby, Bronwyns Colac Bay Inn in New Zealand faces financial bankruptcy. When Max is told of the death of Bronwyns fianc, he returns to New Zealand briefly to help Bronwyn. During this time together a deepening love grows between Bronwyn and Max. Max returns to Montana and once again is involved with Fairhavens. Eventually its problems are resolved when the neighboring development is scaled down. Meanwhile, Bronwyn sells part interest in the inn and is thus enabled to come to Montana where she is given a position on the staff of Fairhavens. Once again the lives of Bronwyn and Max become intertwined. Max becomes the director of Fairhavens after its founder and director retires. His confidence now fully restored, Max begins to carry out various church duties in the region, having regained a renewed sense of Gods call to ministry both through his work at Fairhavens and some of the more traditional ministerial functions.

  lennox chp16: Women in Architecture Sumita Singha, 2018-08-16 Women in architecture have always existed, perhaps not as professionals but always as influencers at many levels. Then during wars in the absence of men, women took on the traditionally masculine roles of design and construction easily. The river Thames is graced by a bridge built entirely by a female workforce. But the acceptance and the presence of female architects alongside male architects took a long time to be realised. Finland was the first country to introduce the formal education of women in architecture around 1860s. However, Ethel Charles (1898), the first British women to gain the membership of the Royal Institute of Architects, went on to design 'cottages' even though she was the first woman to win an International prize for architecture and the RIBA Silver medal winner. Many women worked in various capacities as influencers up to 1970s and 80s- teaching (Teolinda Bolivar, Venezuela), in government responsibilities (Olajumoke Adenowo, Nigeria), interior or furniture designers (Eileen Gray) and as activist (Arundhati Roy, India). Some of the female architects also worked with their husbands (Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry) and other male associates. Somehow it has always been easier to study than to practice architecture for women. The jump from being influencers to front-liners was not an easy transition, even in the 'West'. But changing socio-political times, the globalization of practice and a bold willingness to disengage from past constrictions did indeed change the nature of women in architecture. Things have improved materially for women employees because of social and legal changes (Equal pay, maternity leave, basic pay, etc.) but particular issues of being a woman in architecture remain. The numbers of female-led architecture firms also remain very small compared to other professions such as law, accountancy and medicine. There has also been a question raised about whether there is a feminine style of architecture. These volumes explore four themes - History, Work, Influence and Practice. The set offers a holistic and non Euro-centric view of women in architecture, with good practice and inspiration from all parts of the world.

The comprehensive nature of the appraisal offered by this tool exceeds the scope of most current rating systems, which typically permit a thorough evaluation of relevant environmental factors when designing a new building but fail to consider social and economic impacts of the design phase or the performance of the hospital’s operational structure in these fields. The multidisciplinary evaluation system was developed, from its very inception through to its testing, by following a scientific experimental method in which a global perspective was constantly maintained, as opposed to a focus only on specific technical issues. Application of the SustHealth rating tool to a currently functioning hospital, or one under design, will identify weaknesses and guide users to potential low-cost short-term solutions and longer-term strategies for improvement.

From Fledgling to Eagle chronicles the evolution of the SAAF in the 'Border War' that raged in Angola and South West Africa (Namibia) from 1966 to 1989, covering all the major South African Defence Force (SADF) operations from Ongulumbashe to the 'April Fools' Day war' in 1989. Dick Lord, who writes in a 'from the cockpit' style, has drawn on his own firsthand operational reports and diaries, incorporating anecdotes from dozens of aviators from a wide variety of squadrons--Buccaneers, Canberras, Mirages, Impalas, Bosboks, C-160s and -130s, Dakotas and helicopters. He also expands on the close relationship the SAAF had with the ground troops in a variety of operations--such units as the Parabats, Recces and Koevoet. However, Lord studies the broader ramifications of the conflict in that it was not a simple black-white war. Angola was really just a sideshow for the Soviets who wanted to bleed the SAAF in a war of attrition before attempting total domination of South Africa--their ultimate goal. He is unafraid to admit SADF mistakes--of Operations Hooper and Packer he says: Lines of communications were too long to ably support the battle, which is why we did not clear them off the east bank of the Cuito River and why they captured the three Oliphant tanks which was their only propaganda victory. Although he gives credit to the enemy when they put up a stiff fight, he clearly outlines the overwhelming South African successes and dispels, in accurate detail, all enemy claims by giving an accurate account of each battle. He said: I agree with General Geldenhuys that we thrashed them severely on the Lomba in '85 and '87 ... much recent publicity has also been given to the so-called victory of the Forces of Liberation [SWAPO, MPLA, and 50,000 Cubans and Soviets] over the SADF at Cuito Cuanavale in 1988. Nothing could be further from the truth--it is blatant propaganda.
