la catrina san antonio: San Antonio's Historic Market Square Edna Campos Gravenhorst, 2017-10-30 San Antonio was founded in 1718. By 1730, the viceroy of New Spain had issued orders to map plazas, squares, and parks for the Canary Islanders who would be arriving in 1731. The plazas with their markets became the centers for business and entertainment. The first square was Plaza de Armas (Military Plaza); when the islanders arrived, they marked off the Plaza de las Islas (Main Plaza). Before the Civil War, Alamo Plaza was the center of commerce. As San Antonio grew, the markets needed to relocate. The construction of Municipal Market began in 1899. This market house, built in Paschal Square, was demolished in the 1930s, but the Municipal Market Annex, constructed in the 1920s, survived. The annex buildings would become El Mercado and Centro de Artes. In the 1970s, a permanent building for the farmers market was built in Hay Market Plaza. Today, these buildings, along with the historic buildings in the area, are known as Market Square. |

la catrina san antonio: Minerals of Mexico William D. Panczner, 2013-06-29 After many years of geographical and bibliographical journeys, William Panczner has completed a project that many of us would have loved to initiate, but did not undertake because of its magnitude and intrinsic complexity. Not since L. Salazar Salinas, who is credited with authoring Bole tin numeros 40 and 41 (lnstituto Geologico de Mexico, 1922, 1923), has an author been able to provide readers with a comprehensive volume containing information that is both authentic and reliable on Mexican mineralogy, mineral species, and localities. This volume is the most complete synthesis about Mexican minerals and their occurrences to date. It is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings, is well documented, and is organized into four sections, making it easy to use and enjoyable to read. The introduction contains an interesting summary of the mining history and the development of mineralogy. It also describes, in a condensed but accurate and stimulating manner, the geography and the mineralogy of the country, dividing it into eleven mineral provinces. The author discusses eight of the more important mining districts in Mexico, which produce fine mineral speci mens. There is also a chronology of historical, geological, and mineralogical events in Mexico. This is followed by a bibliography with over 500 references on the subject. |
la catrina san antonio: Fierce Feminine Divinities of Eurasia and Latin America Małgorzata Oleszkiewicz-Peralba, 2015-09-09 In this provocative book, Małgorzata Oleszkiewicz-Peralba examines untamed feminine divinities from around the world. Although distant geographically, these divine figures are surprisingly similar-representing concepts of liminality, outsiderhood, and structural inferiority, embodied in the divine feminine. These strong, independent, unrestrained figures are connected to the periphery and to magical powers, including power over sexuality, transformation, and death. Oleszkiewicz-Peralba offers a study of the origin and worship of four feminine deities across cultures and continents: the Slavic Baba Yaga, the Hindu Kālī, the Brazilian Pombagira, and the Mexican Santa Muerte. Although these divinities have often been marginalized through dismissal, demonization, and dulcification, they continue to be extremely attractive, as they empower their devotees confronting them with the ultimate reality of transience and death. Oleszkiewicz-Peralba examines how these sacred icons have been adaptedand transformed across time and place. |

la catrina san antonio: Chicano Drama Jorge A. Huerta, 2000-11-16 This book, first published in 2000, was the first since Jorge Huerta's earlier study Chicano Theater: Themes and Forms to explore the diversity and energy of Chicano theatre. Huerta takes as his starting point 1979, the year Luis Valdez's play, Zoot Suit, was produced on Broadway. Huerta looks at plays by and about Chicana and Chicanos, as they explore, through performance, the community and its identity caught between the United States and Mexico. Through informative biographies of each playwright and analyses of their plays, Huerta offers an accessible introduction to this important aspect of American theatre and culture. Overall, Huerta establishes a pattern of theatrical activity that is closely linked with both Western European traditions of realism and an indigenous philosophy seen in contemporary Chicano culture. The book contains photographs from key productions and will be invaluable to students, scholars and general theatregoers. |

la catrina san antonio: Day of the Dead in the USA Regina M Marchi, 2009-06-09 Honoring relatives by tending graves, building altars, and cooking festive meals has been an honored tradition among Latin Americans for centuries. The tribute, el Dia de los Muertos, has enjoyed renewed popularity since the 1970s when Latino activists and artists in the United States began expanding Day of the Dead north of the border with celebrations of performance art, Aztec danza, art exhibits, and other public expressions. Focusing on the power of ritual to serve as a communication medium, Regina M. Marchi combines a mix of ethnography, historical research, oral history, and critical cultural analysis to explore the manifold and unexpected transformations that occur when the tradition is embraced by the mainstream. A testament to the complex nature of ethnic identity, Day of the Dead in the USA provides insight into the power of ritual to create community, transmit oppositional messages, and advance educational, political, and economic goals. |

la catrina san antonio: Posada's Broadsheets Patrick Frank, José Guadalupe Posada, 1998 Jose Guadalupe Posada is one of the most important graphic artists of modern Mexico. This book offers a close examination of his extensive broadsheet work in its original context: the murders, disasters, revolts, and popular heroes that engaged the attention of the public in Mexico City in the declining years of Porfirio Diaz's dictatorship. Patrick Frank analyzes the sources of Posada's style in Mexican and European prints and cartoons and shows how he altered them to fill his illustrations with vigor and life. Frank shows that Posada's outlook was that of the working class and that he depicted the stories of his day from a vantage point belonging neither to the defenders of the regime nor to its organized opposition. This book brings fresh insights to the work of a major figure in Mexican art history. |
