Observed times from fertilization to attachment of each of 21 developmental stages were used to test a model that predicts the rate of development at daily fluctuating temperatures; the model relates rate of development for any given stage j, expressed as the reciprocal of time (Rj), to temperature (T). The generalized equation for a developmental stage is Rj = abt ct[squared]. The model was used to predict the effects of small temperature increases (caused by a hypothetical waste-heat discharge) on the rate of development and time of hatching of lake whitefish eggs.

The water column at offshore stations was thermally stratified from June through September 1968, and the hypolimnion contained no DO in mid-August of 1968 or 1970. Composition, abundance, and vertical distribution of crustacean zooplankton changed coincidently with oxygen depletion. Zooplankton composition shifted from mainly cyclopoid copepods in July to mainly cladocerans and copepod nauplii in middle to late August. We believe that mortality of adults and dormancy of copepodites in response to anoxia was the probable reason for the late summer decline of planktonic C. b. thomasi.

Five of the insecticides ranged from highly toxic (methomyl to channel catfish) to relatively non-toxic (trichlorfon to fathead minnows); the sixth, acephate, was only slightly toxic to the fishes tested.

These statistics were then compiled with data of lake trout year-class strengths and age-specific food conversion efficiencies to compute production and forage fish comsumption by lake trout in Lake Michigan during the 1979 growing season. Lake trout consumed an estimated 3,037 t of forage fish, to which alewives contributed about 71%, rainbow smelt 18%, and slimy sculpins 11%. Seasonal changes in bathymetric distributions of lake trout with respect to those forage fish of a suitable size for prey were major determinants of the size and species compositions of fish in the seasonal diet of lake trout.

Tucker, 1982 The proximate composition (percentage lipid, water, fat-free dry material, ash) and caloric content of eight species of Lake Michigan fish were measured: lake trout, coho salmon, lake whitefish, bloater, alewife, rainbow smelt, deepwater sculpin, and slimy sculpin. Except for alewives, proximate composition and caloric content did not differ significantly between males and females. Although the caloric content of all species varied directly with lipid content and inversely with water content, an increase in lipid content did not always coincide with a proportional increasein caloric content when other components of fish composition were essentially unchanged. This observation suggests that the energy content of fish estimated from the proximate composition by using universal conversion factors may not necessarily be accurate.
