Rebecca Jinks focuses in particular on the canonical 20th century cases of genocide: Armenia, Cambodia, Bosnia, and Rwanda. Using literature, film, photography, and memorialisation, she demonstrates that we can only understand the Holocaust's status as a 'benchmark' for other genocides if we look at the deeper, structural resonances which subtly shape many representations of genocide. Representing Genocide pursues five thematic areas in turn: how genocides are recognised as such by western publics; the representation of the origins and perpetrators of genocide; how western witnesses represent genocide; representations of the aftermath of genocide; and western responses to genocide. Throughout, the book distinguishes between 'mainstream' and other, more nuanced and engaged, representations of genocide. Shortly after immigrating to New York in 1926, he created a sensation with an all-black production of Porgy (1927). He then went on to direct the debut Broadway productions of three of the most popular shows in the history of American musical theater: Porgy and Bess (1935), Oklahoma! (1943), and Carousel (1945). Mamoulian began working in film just as the sound revolution was dramatically changing the technical capabilities of the medium, and he quickly established himself as an innovator. Not only did many of his unusual camera techniques become standard, but he also invented a device that eliminated the background noises created by cameras and dollies. Seen as a rebel earlier in his career, Mamoulian gradually gained respect in Hollywood, and the Directors Guild of America awarded him the prestigious D. W. Griffith Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1983. Ha iniziato a scrivere Poesie durante il servizio militare nella noia della branda o nelle serate perse in punizione. Lo muoveva allora tanta rabbia e l’atmosfera di ribellione del 68. Terminato il servizio militare la vena poetica lasciava il posto alla forte passione per il teatro che lo accompagnava già dall’infanzia... per ritornare inaspettata dieci anni dopo. Scopriva allora che la poesia era un mezzo di comunicazione con se stesso mentre il teatro era un mezzo di comunicazione con il suo ambiente. Teatro e poesia affiancati avevano per lui la medesima attrazione. Per tanti anni ha cercato di capire cosa è una poesia: fra le tante definizioni aggiunge la sua “un anelito dell’anima imprigionato, irripetibile ... che vuole voce, che vuole essere liberato con musicalità e grazia. Ma...” aggiunge “...anche quando si riesce a dargli voce ci si accorge che è solo un pezzetto liberato del nostro dentro infinito”. Allora poesia come ricerca di se stessi e di tutto quello che ci circonda e dentro ci muove. Poesia per curiosità... e per imparare. Poesia per gli amici-amici come curiosità e regalo. Poesia per l’occasionale sconosciuto lettore che può trovare in essa risonanze.
