les catacombes histoire: The History of the Christian Church (Complete) Philip Schaff, 1886-01-01 As I appear before the public with a new edition of my Church History, I feel more than ever the difficulty and responsibility of a task which is well worthy to occupy the whole time and strength of a long life, and which carries in it its own rich reward. The true historian of Christianity is yet to come. But short as I have fallen of my own ideal, I have done my best, and shall rejoice if my efforts stimulate others to better and more enduring work. History should be written from the original sources of friend and foe, in the spirit of truth and love, sine ira et studio, with malice towards none, and charity for all, in clear, fresh, vigorous style, under the guidance of the twin parables of the mustard seed and leaven, as a book of life for instruction, correction, encouragement, as the best exposition and vindication of Christianity. The great and good Neander, the father of Church History first an Israelite without guile hoping for the Messiah, then a Platonist longing for the realization of his ideal of righteousness, last a Christian in head and heart made such a history his life-work, but before reaching the Reformation he was interrupted by sickness, and said to his faithful sister: Hannchen, I am weary; let us go home; good night! And thus he fell gently asleep, like a child, to awake in the land where all problems of history are solved. When, after a long interruption caused by a change of professional duties and literary labors, I returned to the favorite studies of my youth, I felt the necessity, before continuing the History to more recent times, of subjecting the first volume to a thorough revision, in order to bring it up to the present state of investigation. We live in a restless and stirring age of discovery, criticism, and reconstruction. During the thirty years which have elapsed since the publication of my separate History of the Apostolic Church, there has been an incessant activity in this field, not only in Germany, the great workshopof critical research, but in all other Protestant countries. Almost every inch of ground has been disputed and defended with a degree of learning, acumen, and skill such as were never spent before on the solution of historical problems.

les catacombes histoire: The Jews in Late Ancient Rome L.V. Rutgers, 2021-11-08 It was long believed that Roman Jews lived in complete isolation. This book offers a refutation of this thesis. It focuses on the Jewish community in third and fourth-century Rome, and in particular on how this community related to the larger, non-Jewish world that surrounded it. Jewish archaeological remains and Jewish funerary inscriptions from Rome are examined from various angles, and compared to pagan and early Christian material and epigraphical remains. The author has shown great comprehensiveness, thoroughness, and accuracy in examining this epigraphic evidence. He also discusses the enigmatic legal treatise called the Collatio. This volume proposes a new way in which the relationship between Jews and non-Jews in late antiquity can be studied. As such, it is an important and useful addition to the literature on Roman Jewry in the middle Empire.
les catacombes histoire: The History of Christian Church Philip Schaff, Eusebius, 2022-11-13 'The History of the Christian Church' stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of Christian development through the ages, entwining the diverse literary styles of historical documentation and theological reflection. Within its pages, the anthology spans the intricate evolution of Christian thought, practices, and organizational structures, from the apostolic age to the present. The inclusion of seminal works by key figures captures the multifaceted dialogues that have shaped Christian ecclesiastical history. Notably, the collection features comprehensive analyses and perspectives, avoiding the attribution of its depth to any single contributor while highlighting the editorial acumen in curating such a broad array of significant texts. The anthology benefits immensely from the scholarly rigor of Philip Schaff and the foundational historical work of Eusebius, blending their unique contributions into a coherent narrative thread. These authors, rooted in different historical milieus—Eusebius in the early Christian centuries and Schaff in the intellectual ferment of the 19th century—provide a diachronic exploration of Christian history that reflects both the temporal depth and geographical breadth of Christianity's development. Their works collectively underscore the dynamic dialogues within Christian communities, the evolution of doctrinal debates, and the maturation of ecclesiastical structures. This collection is an indispensable scholarly resource for anyone interested in the complexities and nuances of Christian history. It offers readers the unparalleled opportunity to engage with the historical and theological underpinnings of one of the world's major religions through the voices of two of its most insightful historians.   les catacombes histoire: „And on this Rock I Will Build My Church“. A New Edition of Philip Schaff’s „History of the Christian Church“ Muhammad Wolfgang G. A. Schmidt, 2017-07 This voluminous work on Church History by Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was originally published between 1858 and 1893 in eight volumes in the USA and covers the period from the beginnings of Biblical Christianity in A.D. 1 to the History of the Reformation in Germany and Switzerland (1517-1648). Being still a popular text in North America, this work had been out of print for over a century and has now been carefully edited and reformatted for republication in three volumes, each of them containing the text of two volumes of the original edition. Schaff’s work, unlike other works in the field, covers a multitude of church history-related aspects – from church doctrine, policy, events and processes to aspects of social moral and family life, arts and more. It is a very comprehensive text, extremely well-written and readable, rich in material and sources used, and attests to the excellence of protestant German theological scholarship under the influence of emerging Historical-Critical Biblical Exegesis at his time. This first volume covers the period from the beginnings to the Ante-Nicene Fathers (A.D. 1-311).

les catacombes histoire: The Complete History of the Christian Church Philip Schaff, 2022-11-13 In The Complete History of the Christian Church, Philip Schaff intricately weaves the narrative of Christian faith from its nascent beginnings to the complexities of modern denominations. This extensive work is characterized by Schaff's erudite prose, integrating rigorous scholarship with accessible language. The narrative is meticulously organized into distinct eras, illustrating the multifaceted developments and doctrinal shifts within Christianity. His contextualization of historical events, such as the Reformation and the Great Schism, enriches the reader's understanding of the interplay between faith and culture throughout the ages. Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was a prominent theologian and historian, whose deep-rooted interest in Christian doctrine and ecclesiastical history stemmed from his own experiences as a Swiss immigrant in America. His commitment to ecumenicism and historical accuracy motivated him to chronicle the evolution of the Church, providing insights into theological debates and their impact on society. Schaff's scholarly endeavors were also shaped by his role as a professor and editor, positioning him uniquely to address the diverse perspectives within Christianity.   les catacombes histoire: Bellies, bowels and entrails in the eighteenth century Rebecca Anne Barr, Sylvie Kleiman-Lafon, Sophie Vasset, 2018-08-08 This collection of essays seeks to challenge the notion of the supremacy of the brain as the key organ of the Enlightenment, by focusing on the workings of the bowels and viscera that so obsessed writers and thinkers during the long eighteenth-century. These inner organs and the digestive process acted as counterpoints to politeness and other modes of refined sociability, drawing attention to the deeper workings of the self. Moving beyond recent studies of luxury and conspicuous consumption, where dysfunctional bowels have been represented as a symptom of excess, this book seeks to explore other manifestations of the visceral and to explain how the bowels played a crucial part in eighteenth-century emotions and perceptions of the self. The collection offers an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective on entrails and digestion by addressing urban history, visual studies, literature, medical history, religious history, and material culture in England, France, and Germany.
les catacombes histoire: The Routledge Handbook of French History David Andress, 2023-12-22 Aimed firmly at the student reader, this handbook offers an overview of the full range of the history of France, from the origins of the concept of post-Roman Francia, through the emergence of a consolidated French monarchy and the development of both nation-state and global empire into the modern era, forward to the current complexities of a modern republic integrated into the European Union and struggling with the global legacies of its past. Short, incisive contributions by a wide range of expert scholars offer both a spine of chronological overviews and a diverse spectrum of up-to-date insights into areas of key interest to historians today. From the ravages of the Vikings to the role of gastronomy in the definition of French culture, from Caribbean slavery to the place of Algerians in present-day France, from the role of French queens in medieval diplomacy to the youth-culture explosion of the 1960s and the explosions of France’s nuclear weapons program, this handbook provides accessible summaries and selected further reading to explore any and all of these issues further, in the classroom and beyond.
les catacombes histoire: The Routledge Handbook of the History of Paris since 1789 Kory Olson, Amanda Shoaf Vincent, Erin-Marie Legacey, 2025-05-29 This handbook assembles a vibrant collection of original scholarship highlighting new and exciting research themes on Paris in the Modern Era. It provides an innovative selection and use of primary sources, broadens the notion of “archive,” and includes diverse voices and multiple perspectives. The contributors, representing a range of academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, connect specific topics to larger historical questions and extend consideration of Paris beyond the city’s historical limit to the outskirts of the metropolis in the Île-de-France region. The first section includes overview chapters tracing structural evolutions and broad movements as understood through recent historiography. The second section presents essays that take a narrower focus on case studies and key moments of reflection and debate, change and commemoration through specific sites, social phenomena, cultural objects, movements, and representations of Paris in the arts. The authors explore how Paris has been imagined, constructed, and mythologized from the outside – by tourists, immigrants, and those separate from the circles of power, as well as from within – by political, administrative, and cultural institutions. Geared towards advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and postgraduate researchers, this handbook contributes to readers’ understanding of France’s place in the world and French society, culture, and policy by telling the story of modern Paris in all its complexity.
