kristina sabaliauskaite silva rerum ebook: Twelve Nights Urs Faes, 2020-12-03 Discover this beautiful winter gem of a novella that makes the perfect stocking filler this Christmas. 'I may have been gone a long time, but I'm no stranger...' Manfred walks alone through a snowy valley, surrounded by his memories, on a pilgrimage of sorts to his childhood home. He's been estranged from his brother Sebastian for decades, ever since their bitter feud over the love of a woman and the inheritance of the family farm. Twelve Nights transports us to the wintry depths of Europe's Black Forest, through the stillness of the snow-covered hills, the dense woods, the cold and mist, in those dark, wild days between Christmas and Epiphany. These nights are a time of tradition and superstition, of tales told around the local innkeeper's table of marauding spirits, as tangible as the ghosts of Manfred's past. But the twelfth night, Epiphany, promises new beginnings, and a hope of reconciliation at last. Twelve Nights is a hymn to the winter landscape and the power of storytelling, a beautiful novella of the natural world and our place in it. |

kristina sabaliauskaite silva rerum ebook: I Married a Communist Philip Roth, 1998 Radio actor Iron Rinn (born Ira Ringold) is a big Newark roughneck blighted by a brutal personal secret from which he is perpetually in flight. An idealistic Communist, a self-educated ditchdigger turned popular performer, a six-foot six-inch Abe Lincoln look-alike, he marries the nation's reigning radio actress and beloved silent-film star, the exquisite Eve Frame (born Chava Fromkin). Their marriage evolves from a glamorous, romantic idyll into a dispiriting soap opera of tears and treachery. And with Eve's dramatic revelation to the gossip columnist Bryden Grant of her husband's life of espionage for the Soviet Union, the relationship enlarges from private drama into national scandal. Set in the heart of the McCarthy era, the story of Iron Rinn's denunciation and disgrace brings to harrowing life the human drama that was central to the nation's political tribulations in the dark years of betrayal, the blacklist, and naming names. I Married a Communist is an American tragedy as only Philip Roth could write it. |
kristina sabaliauskaite silva rerum ebook: The Interpreter Diego Marani, 2018-05-01 'The Interpreter isn't merely the sequel to New Finnish Grammar and The Last of the Vostyachs: it is a singular and deeply felt thesis, a warped manifesto of sorts, derived from a career spent immersed in languages. For Marani is up to his old tricks. Like in its predecessors, the novel comes dripping in satire, but this time of a more avowedly self reflexive nature... A primordial, universal language is the trick, and it is this which, and it is this with which Marani's interpreter, the shape-shifter at the heart of this masked ball of a novel, purports to have 'infected' Felix. His 'incomprehensible blather' might in fact be 'the ancient language of Eden, the one in which the serpent spoke to Adam'. Marani's ideas are typically far-reaching and provocative.' Thea Lenarduzzi in The Times Literary Supplement 'This is more of a romp than the other two novels, more comedic, albeit a very dark kind of comedy; part investigation into the properties of language, part thriller. The only lead Bellamy has is a list of seemingly random cities: Vancouver, San Diego, Papeete, Vladivostok, Odessa ... At one point he is sent to a sinister therapeutic institution, where patients are taught languages unknown to them in order to address their problems (Bellamy is assigned Romanian. Each language has its own therapeutic effect, but “English is the language of cowards and queers,” says an inmate angrily at one point, which is certainly a new way of looking at it). When we find out what links the list of cities together we realise that we have, in a most enjoyable way, been subject to a kind of superior shaggy dog story. Marani understands the appeal of the idea of the primordial language, but knows well enough that it is a Snark, a chimera, which is why the novel ends the way it does, why it is deliberately not as haunting as Grammar and Vostyachs, and also why Marani says this is the last time he’ll address the subject in fiction. It is excellently translated by Judith Landry, who I hope is not suffering like Marani’s characters.' Nick Lezard's Choice in The Guardian |

Set during World War II amid the trenches of the eastern front and the turmoil of Berlin under the Third Reich, The Undertaking intertwines the lives of two German strangers entering into a proxy marriage of convenience, self-interest, and of ideology. kristina sabaliauskaite silva rerum ebook: Bakhita Véronique Olmi, 2019-04-16 Inspired by the true story of a former slave who became a saint, this poignant novel explores how a human being can survive the obliteration of her identity, and how kindness and generosity can be born out of profound trauma. She recalls little of her childhood, not even her own name. She was barely seven years old when she was snatched by slave raiders from her village in the Darfur region of southern Sudan. In a cruel twist, they gave her the name that she will carry for the rest of her life: Bakhita, the Lucky One in Arabic. Sold and resold along the slave trade routes, Bakhita endures years of unspeakable abuse and terror. At age thirteen, at last, her life takes a turn when the Italian consul in Khartoum purchases her. A few years later, as chaos engulfs the capital, the consul returns to Italy, taking Bakhita with him. In this new land, another long and arduous journey begins--one that leads her onto a spiritual path for which she is still revered today. With rich, evocative language, Véronique Olmi immerses the reader in Bakhita's world--her unfathomable resilience, her stubborn desire to live, and her ability to turn toward the pain of others in spite of the terrible sufferings that she too must endure. |
kristina sabaliauskaite silva rerum ebook: The Forest Edward Rutherfurd, 2005-03-01 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “Rutherford brings England’s New Forest to life” (The Seattle Times) in this companion to the critically acclaimed Sarum From the time of the Norman Conquest to the present day, the New Forest, along England’s southern coast, has remained an almost mythical place. It is here that Saxon and Norman kings rode forth with their hunting parties, and where William the Conqueror’s son Rufus was mysteriously killed. The mighty oaks of the forest were used to build the ships for Admiral Nelson’s navy, and the fishermen who lived in Christchurch and Lymington helped Sir Francis Drake fight off the Spanish Armada. The New Forest is the perfect backdrop for the families who people this epic story. The feuds, wars, loyalties, and passions of many hundreds of years reach their climax in a crime that shatters the decorous society of Bath in the days of Jane Austen, whose family lived on the edge of the Forest. Edward Rutherfurd is a master storyteller whose sense of place and character—both fictional and historical—is at its most vibrant in The Forest. “As entertaining as Sarum and Rutherford’s other sweeping novel of British history, London.”—The Boston Globe |
kristina sabaliauskaite silva rerum ebook: Mission to Paris Alan Furst, 2013-06-04 “A master spy novelist.”—The Wall Street Journal “Page after page is dazzling.”—James Patterson NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Late summer, 1938. Hollywood film star Fredric Stahl is on his way to Paris to make a movie. The Nazis know he’s coming—a secret bureau within the Reich has been waging political warfare against France, and for their purposes, Fredric Stahl is a perfect agent of influence. What they don’t know is that Stahl, horrified by the Nazi war on Jews and intellectuals, has become part of an informal spy service run out of the American embassy. Mission to Paris is filled with heart-stopping tension, beautifully drawn scenes of romance, and extraordinarily alive characters: foreign assassins; a glamorous Russian actress-turned-spy; and the women in Stahl’s life. At the center of the novel is the city of Paris—its bistros, hotels grand and anonymous, and the Parisians, living every night as though it were their last. Alan Furst brings to life both a dark time in history and the passion of the human hearts that fought to survive it. Praise for Mission to Paris “The most talented espionage novelist of our generation.”—Vince Flynn “Vividly re-creates the excitement and growing gloom of the City of Light in 1938–39 . . . It doesn’t get more action-packed and grippingly atmospheric than this.”—The Boston Globe “One of [Furst’s] best . . . This is the romantic Paris to make a tourist weep. . . . In Furst’s densely populated books, hundreds of minor characters—clerks, chauffeurs, soldiers, whores—all whirl around his heroes in perfect focus for a page or two, then dot by dot, face by face, they vanish, leaving a heartbreaking sense of the vast Homeric epic that was World War II and the smallness of almost every life that was caught up in it.”—The New York Times Book Review “A book no reader will put down until the final page . . . Critics compare [Alan] Furst to Graham Greene and John le Carré [as] a master of historical espionage.”—Library Journal (starred review) “Alan Furst’s writing reminds me of a swim in perfect water on a perfect day, fluid and exquisite. One wants the feeling to go on forever, the book to never end. . . . Furst is one of the finest spy novelists working today.”—Publishers Weekly |

kristina sabaliauskaite silva rerum ebook: Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex Oksana Stefanivna Zabuz︠h︡ko, 2011 Called the most influential Ukrainian book for the 15 years of independence, Oksana Zabuzhko's Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex became an international phenomenon when it shot to number one on the Ukrainian bestseller list and remained there throughout the 1990s. The novel is narrated in first-person streams of thought by a sharp-tongued poet with an irreverently honest voice. She is visiting professor of Slavic studies at Harvard and her exposure to American values and behaviors conspires with her yearning to break free from Ukrainian conventions. In her despair over a recently ended affair, she turns her attention to the details of her lover's abusive behavior. In detailing the power her Ukrainian lover wielded over her, and in admitting the underlying reasons for her attraction to him, she begins to see the chains that have defined her as a Ukrainian woman - and in doing so, exposes and calls into question her country's culture of fear and repression at the very time that it wrestled its way toward independence. |

kristina sabaliauskaite silva rerum ebook: The Letters of Nicodemus Jan Dobraczynski, 2015-07-22 The Letters of Nicodemus is a fictional account of the impact of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ upon one of the lesser New Testament characters, but it is in no way just another recital of a familiar story. Nicodemus is presented as a man of intelligence and great learning, devoted to the law of Moses and to the conventions of his sect, but drawn to the compelling personality of the miracle-worker from Nazareth through the lingering illness of a favorite daughter. Against a convincing and vivid back-ground of Jewish and Roman politics and known Biblical events, Nicodemus' letters to his former teacher, Justus, reveal the subsequent bitter and bewildering struggle his frank incredulity in a Messiah who could never conform to the expectations of the Jewish priesthood, and his deep need to know and to accept the mysteries of Christ's words and deeds. Jan Dobraczynski, one of the leading contemporary novelists in Poland, has written a moving and scholarly interpretation of the growth of belief amongst those in direct contact with Christ. The Letters of Nicodemus is a novel which in its profound religious sense and bredth of imagination will appeal to readers of all denominations. |
kristina sabaliauskaite silva rerum ebook: Reformation John Murray Todd, 1971 An in-depth, scholarly history of the Reformation which examines the causes, personages and events of the Reformation and their impact on the Christian Churches throughout the centuries. John M. Todd--author of the biography, Martin Luter, praised by the critics for its honesty and impartiality--her discusses the Reformation from three perspectives: its roots deep in the history of the Church and in the nature of Christianity itself; the revolt and the first fifty years of its development (including and objective presentation of the teachings of Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, the English Reformers, and others); and twentieth-century outgrowths of the various reform movements, including reforms in the post-conciliar Church. With remarkable clarity, the author shows thee at-first isolated forces of reform bean to assume common denominators; notably, a return to the Bible, and opposition to legalism and clericalism. Mr. Todd demonstrates that the fiery message of the Reformation--the authority and teaching of the Gospel instead of Canon Law--was not unique to sixteenth-century Europe. Similar movements had appeared as far back as the fourth century and in such mediaeval groups as the Cathars, the Waldensians and the Lollards. In a final section, dealing with twentieth-century outcomes, he shows how the reformation experience continues to recur today in contemporary theology and Catholic doctrine as a whole. Today, he writes, the Reformation themes are running their final course within the Roman Catholic Church itself. Transcending all denominational barriers, this dispassionate, comprehensive account of the reformation will be welcomed by all seeking a fresh approach to one of the most momentous developments in the history of Western civilization. -Publisher |

El autor invita al lector al mundo de las mujeres sabias y fuertes, cultivando el conocimiento de antepasados, dotadas de habilidades extraordinarias, dedicadas a la magia y la curación, e incluso a viajar en el tiempo. |
