En El banquero de los pobres, Yunus describe los múltiples obstáculos que ha tenido que ir venciendo para poner sus ideas en práctica –sus batallas con los burócratas de los bancos, los temores profundamente arraigados en sus primeros prestatarios y prestatarias provisionales-- y también sus victorias. Llevadas a la práctica, las teorías de Yunus funcionan. El Banco Grameen ha proporcionado más de 2.500 millones de dólares en micropréstamos a más de dos millones de familias del Bangla Desh rural. Casi el 95% de los clientes de Yunus son mujeres y el índice de reembolso de los préstamos es prácticamente del 100%.
