Stewart, 2021-02-15 Drawing on newspaper accounts, college yearbooks and the recollections of veterans, this book examines the impact of World War I on sports in the U.S. As young men entered the military in large numbers, many colleges initially considered suspending athletics but soon turned to the idea of using sports to build morale and physical readiness. Recruits, mostly in their twenties, ended up playing more baseball and football than they would have in peacetime. Though most college athletes volunteered for military duty, others replaced them so that the reduction of competition was not severe. Pugilism gained participants as several million men learned how to box.

Trained at Alfred University in the early 1960s, Reitz has pursued a life-long investigation of salt and wood firing of his ceramic pieces in order to preserve the energy and freshness of his artistic marks and gestures. Finding that the texture and unpredictability of salt-firing suited his work, Reitz almost single-handedly revived this neglected technique, and through long experimentation developed a range of colors and surface effects previously unknown in salt-firing. Juggling and manipulating the variables in each firing, Reitz is a virtuoso who relishes knowing what he can control and what he cannot. His work maintains a fine balance between technical mastery and improvisation. The Elvehjem Museum of Art (now the Chazen Museum of Art) retrospective features some seventy-four ceramic works that Reitz created between 1960 and the present. There are numerous chapters that show the progression of emergency management equipment and how it was used through the last four centuries in the United States. There are also some never seen photos of Nagasaki shortly after the blast in World War Two. We will also meet Uncle Bob who sometimes worked in the hot zone and was later electrocuted, injured his spine, and was in a coma for a while. We will also discuss some of the issues with electrical burns too. Later chapters include the topic of telemedicine and the technology used in telemedicine. Telemedicine becomes important to serve rural communities around the world where people may not have access to quality health care usually available in cities.
